"Eine Stadt feiert Geburtstag" is a German 14.5-minute film from 1959, so this one is already way over 50 years old. The director and co-writer is Ferdinand Khittl and the title already gives away what this little movie is about: a German city celebrating its anniversary. We see parades, hear music that fits the occasion and finally see a play that is intended to remind us of the old days of this city. And randomly in-between, we see a piece of animation here and there. It is not entirely bad, but honestly I felt it was very irrelevant and completely uninteresting unless you have a strong connection to the Bavarian city mentioned in the title. People who do can maybe check this one out, but everybody else can certainly think of a dozen better ways to spend the next quarter of an hour. Story-wise it is also very underwhelming and not even the (almost non-existing) presence of renowned actor Mario Adorf can make this one work. I highly recommend to stay away. This is certainly a contender for Khittl's worst (short film) and it is very telling how bad German films in the 1950s and 1960s were if works like this one here (or other stuff by Khittle too) always get awards recognition from a prestigious body like the German Film Awards. Shame on them.
