- TriviaThis was intended as the pilot episode of a TV series for Desilu, consisting of short stories with a sting in the tail, all introduced by Orson Welles. However, Welles was adamant that he "didn't want it to be like Hitchcock" - although the huge success of "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" was probably what inspired the idea. Welles instead planned to narrate each story, weaving in and out of the story and talking directly to the audience as he does in this pilot, thereby having the largest role without actually being a character in the plot. At the end of "The Fountain Of Youth", he actually mentions "next week's story" by name. However, it was never made and the series did not eventuate; Welles may have been compensated, perhaps, by the fact that this pilot did win the Peabody Award that year.

A lost gem from Orson Welles
Orson's first attempt at a Alfred Hitchcock style show was not succesful. However, his later attempt in the 70's(Orson Welles Great Mysteries) proved to be a little more succesful, lasting for a few episodes.
Although Orson Welles did not want to copy Alfred Hitchccock Presents, it is very clear that the show was a heavy an inspiration for this short. Probably for this reason and the budget, Orson used stills brilliantly. Also unlike Hitchcock, Orson interjects throughout the story narrating and adding his subtle and very witty commentary.
Production quality wise it isn't quite up to par with Alfred Hitchcock Presents, but I must say I was pleasantly surprised and after a couple of minutes I was hooked till the end.
The idea of this translating into a show is certainly enticing. Unfortunately, it did not and we are simply left with our imagination...Orson Welles Presents !
