Having learned of the betrayal of his mistress, the ex-model Liliane de Rosemar, through an anonymous letter. Max Darteau makes a scene in a restaurant and then returns home without dinner. The ringing of the telephone snaps him out of his thoughts. It is Jacques Brasselier. Caught off guard, he agrees to receive him.

At seven a.m., the butler who is in charge of waking up his boss, the industrialist Max Darteau, discovers him bathed in blood. He calls the police. The policemen find that although the safe is empty, the victim's wallet has not been touched, and there are absolutely no signs of forced entry. The only sure thing is that the blow has been struck with a knife.

Two police detectives with a letter rogatory arrive at the home of Liliane de Rosemar, suspected of the murder of Max Darteau. They learn her real identity, Simone Chamboiseau. On hearing of her lover's death, she breaks down and protests her innocence. But a search of her flat reveals a large sum of money, the source of which she refuses to divulge. She is taken to the Quai des Orfèvrres.
