The anthology horror film is back in the wake of the success of chapter-style horror films like The Theatre Bizarre (2011) and its announced follow-up, V/H/S (2012), the soon-to-be-released sequel V/H/S 2 (2013) and The ABC’s of Death (2012).
While this movement generates a good deal of conversation about the fondly remembered Amicus productions of the 1960’s and 1970’s like Dr. Terror’s House Of Horrors (Freddie Francis, 1965), Torture Garden (Freddie Francis, 1967), The House That Dripped Blood (Peter Duffell, 1971) and Asylum (Roy Ward Baker, 1972) among others, the comparison is not exactly accurate across the board.
While the segments of V/H/S are unified by shared visual style and a wraparound story, The Theatre Bizarre and The ABC’s of Death come off as collections of essentially unrelated horror short films loosely bound by a flimsy wraparound segment in the case of The Theatre Bizarre or a basic concept as...

Vincenzo Natali has made some of the most interesting science fiction films of the last fifteen years.
His first short film, Elevated, is a wonderfully paranoid peek into Natali’s own particular Twilight Zone (and you can watch the whole film here) and Cube is an established cult classic, with derivatives still being released years later.
His latest film, Splice, is a dark and delicious cautionary tale of the collision of science and morality with some incredible creature designs and we were lucky enough to speak with Mr. Natali about pushing boundaries and inter-species sex.
There are some spoilers for Splice contained in here, but for the initiated or the fearless please read on.

Thanks so much for taking the time to talk with us, I imagine you’re doing a lot of interviews for Splice?

Let me tell you…(laughs)…I started doing interviews in April,...

Word has it that Relativity Media has optioned the original screenplay "Down" from freshman scribe Greg Russo.
Described by one person who read it as " 'Buried' meets '1408,' " the supernatural thriller centers on a guy trapped in an elevator.
Well it's happening. Between chairlift thriller Frozen and the success of Ryan Reynolds' Buried, expect to see a lot of these claustrophobic thrillers.
Ps. If you haven't see Vincenzo Natali's supernatural elevator short, Elevated, do so immediately.

Did you know that, even before the cramped quarters of Cube, Canadian director and Quiet Earth fave, Vincenzo Natali, made a short called Elevated which took the concept of claustrophobic thrillers even further? Completed in 1997, the 17 minute film brought Natali and fellow Canadian filmmaker Karen Walton (Ginger Snaps) together to create a tense thriller that took place entirely in the confines of an elevator. More specifically, the film is about two people, Ben and Ellen, who are thrust into adventure when all of a sudden, Hank, the blood covered security man of the building rushes into their elevator, claiming that there's a dangerous alien-like creature in the building. To me, this is the kind of film that should be required viewing for any aspiring filmmaker, because it clearly articulates the secret ingredients to any successful low budget flick. There's great characters but also a screenplay that's ripe with a high concept,...
