Never fib about yourself to the person you intend to marry.

That's the lesson that both Leslie Brooks and Jimmy Lloyd learn in this B comedy with songs, having told each other that they did something completely different for a living. Brooks, a cigarette girl in a swanky nightclub, pretends that she is the headliner, and Lloyd, a clerk, claims to be president of the company he works for. By luck, Brooks gets the chance to go on for one night, and he is given the title to the company, which puts him in legal trouble. It's a bit of a Cinderella story where the prince isn't quite royalty and the girl from the cinders more about cigarette butts than ashes.

The fairy godmother here, so to speak, is the proprietor of a posh doll shop, played with old world charm by Ludwig Donath. He's the narrator, telling the story to a young customer, trying to persuade her that the dolls he sells have personalities of their own. Indeed, in the scene where Brooks and Lloyd visits them, they do seem to come to life in a sweet moment where Lloyd makes two of them dance. While the dolls are cute, they look like they are more for display than for little girls to play with. There are numerous smaller subplots, making this a bit too much for a 67 B movie already interrupted by a few songs. The one number sung by Joan Barton is the highlight. It's nice to see Brooks play a sympathetic character for a change, even if she is basically lying to the man she loves. So while this is flawed, it has its moments and is pretty entertaining overall.
