Post-Apocaliptic Roman Warrior
This is another one of my favorite video games of all time, yeah, it's pretty much another platform action game but most of theme are somewhat the same it's really a matter of execution that stands out. This was a game I played in the arcades when I was about seven years old, so once again another relic from my childhood.
I really like the concept which is really unique putting the fantasy in post-apocalyptic settings which I think is cool and something that hasn't been done much in both genres the other examples are the anime/manga series "Fist of the North Star" and the film "Wizards". Not much in plotline except that you're the last Roman warrior that must traverse the post-apocalyptic landscape to liberate it from an evil empire. That's it in a nutshell but most video games of yesteryear never really were known for deep story at the time anyway, it was more concerned about gameplay and this game plays well.
The game is the straightforward sort of plays like games like "Kung Fu Master" as you get from point A to B without dying much. The control is sold where your armed with a sword and shield, I really like that you have a shield which gives you character defensive measures. It may seem a little awkward at first, but you get use to it, it's all a matter of timing knowing whenever to utilize offence and defense against your opponents. Though there is a catch, if your shield takes to hard of a hit mainly an explosion, you lose both your sword and shield. But you're not helpless as you have martial arts skills, you can punch, kick, even jump kick but the catch is you have no defense against projectiles. Which is why it's always important to find another sword and shield.
Each level is unique the background animation is very good. I like how each level is unique and a different challenge. From one level where you battle at a parking garage, there is a looked door and you must venture the second floor to get to the button. Or on the third level where much like the game "Elevator Action" you descend throughout the building on each floor you land on you must fight or get though whatever obstacle is stationed on that floor. Really like the music in the game there are some good memorable tunes, my favorite one is the first level which just sounds cool as it just has a roman heroic tune with a slight touch of the darkness which makes sense as your in a post-apocalyptic setting after all.
And of course, there is a good decent assortment of enemies which consist of some evil roman warriors, guys armed with crossbows that have strange masks on, in the second level there are guys that have helicopter packs that drop bombs on you.
Though it's really the bosses that stand out the most as each of them are really colorful and a little daft, each have sometime unique about them like there are two mohawked hatchet welding punks, a muscle guy in some S and M gear and a mask armed with a huge club that the size of a tree, a fire breathing mutant that can turn into a deadly ball, and one that's my favorite is one that looks like Abobo from Double Dragon whom has cybernetic arms and his hands can fire out and come back to his arms which is similar to Hard Man's ability from "Mega Man 3".
And the game is hard, but is manageable it's one of those game if you stick with it long enough you'll be able to get though with few to no problems, once you know all the right places to stand and when and where to hit. Even the boss battles are a bit of a challenge at least at first but are easy by nature once you figure out the pattern.
Overall, this is a vintage classic that worth a swing.
