A Funny Travel to My Adolescence
claudio_carvalho15 December 2007
"Como É Boa a Nossa Empregada" is an erotic comedy from the 70's (called "pornochanchada" genre) divided in three segments: 1) "Lula e a Copeira" ("Lula and the Kitchen Maid"): Lula (Pedro Paulo Rangel) uses frogs, bats and spiders to scare the ugly kitchen maid of his house and force her to quit the job. When his parents put an advertisement on the newspaper to hire a new maid, he waits the candidates outside the house to choose one very hot, telling lies about his family to the others. They hire the sexy Clara (Vilma Chagas), who is subjected to a sexual harassment from Lula's father Rivadávia, the family's friend Dr. Ricardo (Edson Silva) and Lula, leading the trio to troubled situations.

This segment is very funny, with some great jokes, like for example the behavior of the cynical Lula using frogs, bats and spiders to get rid off his ugly maid and then convincing the ugly candidates to not apply to the job position. The "sleepwalker" Ricardo is so ridiculous and caricatural that makes laugh. My vote is seven.

2) "O Terror das Empregadas" ("The Terror of the Maids"): The sixteen years old Bebeto (Stepan Nercessian) chases all the maids of his house and neighborhood trying to have intercourse with them. His mother (Maria Pompeu) takes him to the psychologist Dr. Leonel (José Lewgoy), who convinces her that her son needs to have a sexual experience with a whore to help his self-esteem, and suggests the sexy and expensive prostitute Leila Sandra (Meiry Vieira). However, Bebeto fails and Dr. Leonel tries to find the appropriate healing for his sexual problem.

This segment is very silly, with the twenty years old Stepan Nercessian playing a sixteen years old teenager. The conclusion is funny. My vote is six.

3) "O Melhor da Festa" ("The Best of the Party"): Dr. Renato (Jorge Dória) a.k.a. Naná is a very hypocrite wolf, wearing the mask of a conservative and moralist man at home with his family, but being a sexual harasser with maids and other women. When Naná and his wife (Neuza Amaral) go to a party, he gives his calling card to the sexy waitress, expecting to have one night stand with her. They schedule a meeting and while going to a motel, Naná stops at the bank to get some money and sees his wife crossing the street. He asks the manager to call Honorinho (Carlo Mossy) to go to the motel with the woman in his car to avoid a confrontation with his wife. Honorinho has a wonderful afternoon with his escort and later he tells Naná how dirty and hot the woman is.

This segment is simply erotic and hilarious with a really very funny tale. Naná plays a despicable character that has a great surprise in the end. My vote is eight.

This naive and popular genre was a sort of relief to the lower classes in the period of the military dictatorship and strong censorship in the 70's, and was called "pornochanchada" by the Brazilian "intelligence" of the Cinema Novo and other intellectuals. However, this type of comedy has an unique style associated to the sexual fantasies of that historic period in Rio de Janeiro.

What I like most in these segments is the chance to revisit my wonderful city in the period of my adolescence, showing Rio de Janeiro safe and without violence like any other "normal" city. I just question how was possible to our society losing these values and living in permanent fear under siege of criminals and drug-dealers within about thirty years and not finding solution to resolve this social issue. My vote is seven.
