George Clooney, quite busy guy indeed.
So, ladies and gentlemen, check this out: Clooney is now attached to star in Fox 2000’s adaptation of The Monster of Florence, the best-selling book by Douglas Preston and Mario Spezi.
And if that sounds familiar to you, let us remind you that once upon a time (actually it was 2008) Tom Cruise acquired the rights to the same novel, and even recruited his Valkyrie screenwriter Chris McQuarrie to write and co-produce a big screen adaptation of the book.
Sound’s like some interesting story…
Here’s The Monster of Florence synopsis part:
“In 2000, Douglas Preston fulfilled a dream to move his family to Italy. Then he discovered that the olive grove in front of their 14th century farmhouse had been the scene of the most infamous double-murders in Italian history, committed by a serial killer known as the Monster of Florence.
Preston, intrigued, meets...

An amateur would be detective with an obsession about a bunch of unsolved murders in Italy is on the cards for George Clooney, who will play Douglas Preston. Preston is a writer who teams up with Mario Spezi (an Italian crime reporter) and they thunder off trying to solve a number of murders which saw 7 couples meet their maker between 1974 and 1985. Couple this with non welcome authorities and a spell in jail, The Monster Of Florence could well have us on the edge of our seats!

Serial killers will always be fascinating fodder for cinematic storytelling, and this is especially true when the tale is based on a real-life killer who was never caught. Bong Joon-ho’s Memories Of Murder and David Fincher’s Zodiac are probably the two finest examples of the mini-genre, but a new contender has just been announced that combines a strong film-maker pedigree alongside some truly heinous unsolved crimes. The Monster Of Florence is based on the 2008 non-fiction bestseller from Douglas Preston and Mario Spezi, and it explores a series of gruesome killings that took place in Florence, Italy between 1968 and 1985. Sixteen people were killed in all, mostly couples, with the victims typically shot and stabbed multiple times. Many of the women also had their breasts and/or pubic areas mutilated. So that’s pretty effed up and gross. A handful of men were arrested and imprisoned over the years, but the killings continued as they sat in...

Fox 2000 has acquired the film rights to Douglas Preston and Mario Spezi's best-selling book The Monster Of Florence, with George Clooney attached to star. Chris McQuarrie is writing the screenplay with his Valkyrie co-writer Nathan Alexander. Tom Cruise was originally slated to star when the picture was at United Artists. Preston and Spezi's book is an investigation into the murderer (or murderers) known as Il Mostro, who killed more than a dozen people from the late 1960's to the mid-1980's without being caught. In the course of their digging, Preston, who had moved with his family to a villa in Florence, and Spezi, an Italian crime journalist, were themselves then investigated by the police.

Valkyrie and Usual Suspects scribe Christopher McQuarrie has signed on to write and produce United Artists previously announced project The Monster Of Florence, a serial killer thriller that will change its point of view. Tom Cruise was originally said to be a possible choice to star. Story chronicles a true series of events from author Douglas Preston's life. Shortly after moving his family to Italy in 2000, Preston learned that an olive grove on their property had been the scene of a brutal murder. Teaming with Italian journalist Mario Spezi, Preston began investigating the crime, which was part of a series of eight double homicides between 1968-85. Story also spawned a 1985 Italian-language docudrama of the same name. McQuarrie sees the project as an opportunity to tell the story of a writer, not a serial killer (something similar to what David Fincher did with Zodiac).

Tom Cruise and United Artists have acquired rights to serial-killer thriller The Monster Of Florence, with Cruise attached to produce and possibly to star, according to Douglas Preston, author of the bestseller that had previously inspired the Thomas Harris sequel Hannibal. Preston and Italo journo Mario Spezi told Corriere della Sera they have inked with UA for a big-screen adaptation of their reconstruction of eight grisly double homicides believed to have been committed single-handedly between 1968 and 1985 in and around the Italian Renaissance gem. "It's the biggest movie deal in my life," the leading Italo daily quoted Preston as saying in a front page story. Previous Preston tomes made into movies include thriller "The Relic."...

In the summer of 1981, the historic city of Florence, Italy was rocked by the brutal murder of two lovers in a parked car. Mario Spezi was a newspaperman who caught the case and became the city's foremost expert on what turned out to a serial killer with at least 14—and maybe 16—victims. The murderer, dubbed The Monster by the press, shot and mutilated couples having sex in the Florentine hills (a time-honored custom in a country where late marriage is common, and living together is unthinkable). His signatures were a distinctive notch on the shell casings and the removal of the women's sex organs. Although the case was an Italian obsession for years and inspired Thomas Harris' sequel Hannibal, The Monster remained relatively unknown in America. So when popular author Douglas Preston arrived in Florence to write a novel and contacted Spezi for research purposes, he stumbled onto...
