Every Disney World theme park either has or had a 3D extravaganza. So, it makes sense that when they opened a new part, Animal Kingdon, they should have another one based on their upcoming Pixar film, "A Bug's Life". I mean, how could you go wrong with a computer generated 3D effects-fest? Oh, let me count the ways.
First, let me begin by saying what probably hurt the show the most: the park itself. With Countdown to Extinction being the only other half decent thing in the park, expectations are already borderline very low. Plus, the show is inside the main attraction of the park, a giant cement tree. Ooh, Disney made a fake tree! Like I can't buy one at a K-mart. It's not that the tree itself is boring, but in order to get to the theatre, you half to walk through the largest line on Earth (and I mean large by Disney's standards). When me and my friends saw the sign that said "15 wait from here", we didn't expect to walk the entire 15 minutes. And it's not as if there was a large crowd either. The only smart thing they did was offer free water half way through. Hey, it beat the monotony.
As for the show itself, not much better. Here's a concept: try making the effects work. The opening stars with a cute surprise, the theater "curtain" is actually a huge group of butterflies. Suddenly, one flies out at you. At least, I assume that's what it was doing. All I saw were two butterflies which should have merged into one to create 3D. My friend even leaned over to me and said "Hey! My glasses are broken!"
Even worse was the spider scene. Giant rubber spiders are lowered to about 5 feet above the audience. They're so cheesey and glow in the dark, that you want to laugh at them. But you assume it's scary cause there's the sound of a baby crying behind you. Of course, I look around, no baby in the entire theater. Youngest person was probably 13 years old. Come on, Disney. We know you fake it in the rides, but why the shows? Do you really think we're that dumb.
And as for plot? It's just a lame twist at the insect circus. Each one as obvious as the next. "Gee, look at the acid-spitting tarantula! I wonder what's going to happen next? Duh-huh-huh-huh!"'
Now, I will admit that there are two pleasant surprises in the show. First, the bee scene. I won't say what happens but let's just use a little of the logic I mentioned in my past paragraph. As for the end of the show, ok, I bought the bugs crawling under the seat too. Of course, any doof who's seen "Honey, I Shrunk The Audience" at Epcot (and chances are, if you're at Animal Kingdom, you've seen all the other parks enough) knows that Disney will do this to you. It's just expected rehashed material.
Bottom line: Even Captain EO was better than this waste of time. I'll take "Honey", or "Muppet-Vision 3D" over this anyday!
