Early work of gender equality in early era of Chinese movie industry
The literal translation of the title of this movie is: the Female Prince.
This movie is a pioneer in the early era of Chinese movie industry in that it advocated gender equality and challenged, as well as criticized the dross of the traditional Confucian teaching, namely, the discrimination against women such as in this movie, the female protagonist must be disguised as a boy in order to get the proper recognition for its achievement. However, the movie did not do well in the box office because by the time of the release, China was already at war, and other movies did not perform well either.
