Merely watchable porno travelogue
lor_3 December 2014
Companion film to the way more famous THE PLAYGIRLS OF MUNICH, DUTCH TREAT is merely more of the same. Fans in the '40s got high quality road movies teaming Bing and Bob Hope (and Dorothy Lamour) but poor bedraggled porno fans in the Golden Age of the '70s were stuck with this junk.

Roger Caine and Zebedy Colt are the buddy Amercans out for a good time in Amsterdam. There are beautiful girls galore (film's advertising boasts 33 local lovelies in the cast), but it isn't until the guys buy a camera and pose as Hollywood professionals looking for new talent that they get the gals to give them a tumble.

This mindless nonsense automatically has better production values than the lion's share of stay at home porn produced around this time, but the net effect is NSG. Watching silent interstitial footage of the boys wandering around Amsterdam is boring, and their comedy antics remain stillborn. Essentially we're treated to ever-reliable NYC porn stud Roger delivering endless cum shots and an endless array of local beauties posing (most of them do not get involved in the hardcore sex action). This is really ephemeral entertainment, as indicated by none of the European actresses getting a real screen credit -no superstar Silvia Saints (or Sylvia Kristels) in this bunch.

For his part, Colt pulls some faces but does not get down with the gals, likely because he's been typecast as the nebbishy sidekick. With Alpha Blue Archives belatedly releasing the forgotten picture on a 3-fer with PLAYGIRLS OF MUNICH and a dreadful loop carrier retitled FRENCH KITTENS, the distributor raises an issue by crediting Colt with directing the film under the alias Navred Reef.

I have long wondered whether Reef actually existed, since all of his work turns out to be Colt vehicles. IMDb almost comically limits biographical info about the mysterious Reef to a listing that he was murdered in 1982 (while Colt lived on for a couple more decades). Obviously folks in the know (Caine most easily) could solve this conundrum but I don't know who to ask - perhaps the voluble Shaun Costello who knows this period of NYC porn production better than anyone.
