hardcore project should probably have gone straight
rduchmann8 June 2000
Written by "Will Kelly," presumably a pseudonym for sometime porn scripter Valerie Kelly, this is a couples-oriented porn feature which would have been better done as a softcore, with higher production values. Prostitute Shanna McCullough (very nice performance) doesn't like her work, which is presented in a totally non-erotic manner: it's just a job. Her real passion is for running. She meets track coach David Cannon, who eventually recruits her for his team and the Olympic trials.

There is considerably more story than usual for a porn film and many of the sex scenes actually get in the way, as they involve peripheral characters (McCullough's co-worker Pam Jennings, their pimp Craig Roberts, his alternate squeeze Valerie LaVeaux, Cannon's friend Paul Thomas, and a couple of jealous femme athletes on Cannon's team). Tech credits are very good but the budget is minimal. Instead of showing us McCullough actually competing at the Olympic trials, e.g., we hear an off-camera tv broadcast that plays while Roberts and LaVeaux romp on his living room sofa.

With an expansion of the characters and deletion of the hardcore, this would have made an acceptable, though perhaps slightly far-fetched, straight film in 1984. Performances are better than average for XXX (though Cannon is a bit of a stiff, as always) but film is a shaky mix of genres, neither fish nor fowl as it stands, and the sex scenes tend to be explicit but far from erotic. McCullough's acting work is sensitive, and it is a bit depressing to consider that she is still, at about age 40 (by my estimate), working in this genre. Why she never made the transition to roles in "real" movies is a mystery to me.

Enjoyable and affecting 80's porn item

Warning: Spoilers
Dejected young hooker Bobbi (a solid and appealing performance by foxy brunette Shanna McCullough) gets fed up with turning tricks for a living, so she leaves her pushy pimp Luther (well played to the slimy hateful hilt by Craig Roberts) and decides to pursue her true passion of running. Eager coach Ed (likable David Cannon) realizes that Bobbi has genuine athletic potential and trains her for the Olympics. But will Luther let Bobbi go?

Director Richard Mailer, working from a thoughtful script by Will Kelly, relates the engrossing story at a steady pace, presents several cool running montages (including one that's set to a cheesy synthesizer version of the theme from "Chariots of Fire"!), and treats the premise with admirable seriousness and sensitivity. The sound cast of 80's porn regulars helps a lot: Pamela Mann as Bobbi's bubbly best gal pal and fellow prostitute April, Paul Thomas as assistant coach Stu, Lisa Lake as the jealous Margo, and Bunny Blue as the sweet Nancy. The sex scenes are quite arousing and energetic while the budding romance between Bobbi and Ed gives this picture some surprisingly touching heart. Robert Chappe's slick cinematography provides a pleasing bright look. Worth a watch.

Trite and uninteresting "Klute" meets "Rocky" (I'm exaggerating!)

Paired with a fine film from the same team "Classical Romance" by the Vinegar Syndrome reissue outfit, "Physical Attraction" is particularly lame by comparison, a poorly made 35mm film that wastes Shanna McCullough. Its poster depicts her all oiled up (sweaty/sexy) wearing boxing gloves in the usual bait & switch marketing approach.

No, she's actually a whore, working for dastardly pimp Craig Roberts, and rooming with the ultra-busty Pamela Mann who steals many a scene by virtue of her impressive rack. David Cannon, who had a supporting role to Paul Thomas in "Classical Romance" is the lead in this one, playing a track coach at Cal Poly, who turns Pygmalion of sorts, as he recruits fellow jogger Shanna to try out for his track team and compete in a big long-distance race.

Director Richard Mailer pulls all his punches in this programmer, clunking along unconvincingly to a desultory conclusion -so poorly structured that it ends with a sex scene of bad guy pimp Roberts getting serviced, while the big race is only heard (not a moment of it shown) on a TV he's watching while humping. Even the revelation that his runaway hooker is the big deal Cinderella in that race is somehow not presented properly - a textbook case of a botched climax (and botched film).

The shooting on 35mm film ensures the footage is watchable, apparently suitable to easily impress both an undiscriminating distributor (Vinegar Syndrome) and the latter-day fan base that watches such product inexplicably sold on Amazon even though the lion's share of XXX content porn is banned from that site. McCullough has literally hundreds of better films and videos to watch, so knee-jerk revival of this one has to be chalked up to stupidity.
