Great Choices for Nintendo Characters, even greater game in itself
Charge8 July 1999
Super Smash Brothers should be owned by any die-hard Nintendo fanatic. Who else but they can remember Ness from Earthbound? Captain Falcon from F-Zero? But of course, the best characters are, of course, Mario and Luigi! Mario has always been the faithful hero, and you finally get to play as the man, Luigi (watch him groove!).

Please, don't regard this among other fighting greats like Street Fighter or Tekken. Consider it in a whole other league of its own. Buy it!

The best multi fighter game for the N64.
emasterslake10 October 2007
This was one of the most unique fighter games of it's time back in the late 90's. When Nintendo 64 was still a dominate console of the fifth generation gaming era.

What got me in buying this game was the fact that you can play as 8 Nintendo copyrighted characters. Mario, Donkey Kong, Samus, Link, Yoshi, Fox McCloud, Pikachu, & Kirby. As well as 4 unlock-able characters making it 12 to chose from.

Unlike the common fighter games. In Super Smash Bros. you get to use unique items to fight and almost all the fighting arenas are based off of a familiar Nintendo game. Choose either Adventure Mode, VS. Mode, or Training Mode to play in. Actual dialog from the talking characters. Not to mention a few surprises happening during the levels. Each fighter you choose has his or her own unique ability.

There are only a few things available to unlock in the game. But besides the graphics being 64 bit making the background and characters polygon-like. And some of the background character being paper thin. This game is still a classic straight from the N64 days. And has changed the face of multi fighter games for good.

Plus this was Samus' only N64 appearance making it a must have for the Metroid fans.

Very fun. (not trying to be spoiler, but watch out if you're easily spoiled.)
ajnrules15 August 2000
Warning: Spoilers
This game is very fun, but some sensitive parents may see it as "too violent," which is kind of true, since this game has bombs and guns and you whack people with bats and things that look like lightsabres. But that's what makes this game fun. I guess the only thing that prevented this game from getting a Teen rating is the fact that the characters are from childish games, like The Legend of Zelda, Donkey Kong Country, Metroid, Super Mario Bros., Yoshi's Story, StarFox, Earthbound, F-Zero, and Pokemon. But still, some little kids around the age of 3 will cry when the big bad monkey punched their dear old Pikachu off the cliff.

The graphics are clean, but it's what people call 2.5D. The gameplay is easy to control but hard to master. The sound is amazing, but the announcer person gets irritating after awhile. You can play this game for a long time without getting bored of it, although some of the levels seem boring if you choose 99 lives on stock or 60:00 on time. And there are all those sore losers when things don't go their way...

But this is a great game and you ought to check it out. But fans of games like Mortal Kombat and Tekken will be disappointed because of all the childish characters and lack of blood, but Nintendo and HAL wants this game to be for everyone, and not just teens.

The "Tekken" of Nintendo Characters.
Super Smash Bros. is a vibrant game. Starring all of your favorite N64 characters. The game is a great thing to show off and beat the crap out of Nintendo characters you hate. The control is nice, the graphics good, and the multiplayer mode outstanding. Every N64 owner should add this to their library of N64 games if they like addicted fighters!

So Happy Together
vince20000200014 September 2007
I remember back in 1999 when this game was just released. It sure was a big hit and copies were sold left and right. This game was revolutionary and it brought so much life back to the dying Nintendo 64. Super Smash Brothers isn't really famous for it's 1 Player mode but more then makes up for it with it's endlessly fun multiplayer mode which you and up to 3 other friends can enjoy playing for hours on end. It's an excellent party game that you may never get tired of. On top of that Nintendo has clashed all their top hero icons together in a tournament. Featuring characters such as Fox, Samus, Link, and more. There are 4 secret characters which need to be unlocked as well as an unlockable multiplayer arena. Each character has his or her signature moves from passed games. This is the best miltiplayer game on the Nintendo 64. There is enough replay value to keep the game interesting for quite a while.

Best Fighting Game of All Time!
Illyngophobia13 April 2008
Now,I love my Virta Fighter for the PS2,but this beats it by a landslide.

This game has wonderful graphic, sounds and effects. Not to mention, has the best options for any game I played. With this game, you can choose which weapons are available to use,you can make teams, change the level of the character you are fighting, for an advantage. And of course, great fighting stages, from different worlds like in Pokemon,Donkey Kong and Super Mario Brothers! The weapons are creative and awesome.Beam swords, land mines, flame throwers, super hammers, baseball bats and so on.You can also do a training challenge, where you can train by fighting against another character. The best challenge is the one player, where you fight the characters, and others like the polygon people, metal Mario and the Master Hand at the end.

The game is wonderful and fun for all ages.

10/10 *****/*****!Go play it now!

The Best Game I've Ever Played!
jonjonat14 September 2010
I can't believe the reviews! Its so low. This game is just awesome and there's now word about it. The graphics were okay the gameplay is fantastic (not to mention there's a story but there simply doesn't have to be) and the characters are well chosen and presented. I always thought the next two Smash Bros in the series were more awesome. But I was 100% wrong! When I started playing this Original Smash Bros it simply blew me away! The introduction was unique and amazing and all the characters have so much fun together. My favorite characters are Luigi, Mario, Donkey Kong and Link and all the rest are cool with their own ways. I play this game for so many hours and I get so stuck into it that sometimes I wish my friends will play with me as well. Good work Nintendo! I'm proud to announce that this is the greatest work of art of gameplay you created!

Isn't it smashing?
rbn_lrk-130 October 2013
All together at once.

Mario, Luigi, Fox and more.

Super Smash Bros is still worth playing for old school gamers these days.

If you want something else than the latest shoot em up game play Super Smash Bros.

Giant Donkey Kong vs other Nintendo characters and on with your classic Nintendo Soundtrack.

The game is more fun for multi players.

Some of the mini games are break the targets.

In the fights you will get Poke balls, fire flowers and more.

The game ranks simple from one against one to a big bunch of Yoshi clones.

Give this a go if you like fighting games, or just for nostalgia.

Find this on emulator, or if you are lucky enough find the real thing at the second hand store.

Super Smash Bros will be on my list of Top Ninendo 64 video games.THis game is great especially for 1999.The graphics and the gameplay are simply excellent. This game isn't as good as Super Smash Bros Melee but this game was released earlier.YOu can choose between plenty of cool characters such as Mario,Luigi,Donkey Kong and plenty of others and you engage in combat with them. You can also choose many different places to battle in.Super Smash Bros I thought was a great game for its time.Super Smash Bros is a very fun and good game.I recommend it!

Something has gone wrong in the happy go lucky world of Nintendo
Terryfan9 April 2015
In 1999 I remember this commercial that feature Mario, Yoshi, Donkey Kong, and Pikachu were walking in a field it was bright day outside they seem to be happy together as the song "So Happy Together" was playing in the background when suddenly the four begin to battle and the narrator said "Something has gone wrong in the happy go lucky world of Nintendo".

It is still one of my favorite video game commercials.

Super Smash Bros contains your favorite Nintendo Characters in a fighting game where you can get four of your friends and duke it out with power ups, weapons, poke-mon balls, fire ball flowers and much more.

The characters you get to play as are Captain Falcon from "F-Zero", Donkey Kong from "Donkey Kong", Fox McCloud from "Star Fox", Jigglypuff, and Pikachu "Pokemon", Samus from "Metroid", Mario and Luigi From "Super Mario Bros", Kirby from "Kirby", Link from "The Legend of Zelda" Ness from "Earthbound/Mother" and Yoshi from "Super Mario World".

You can take all of your favorites into battle. With power ups to fight with. With each character having a different fighting style and their own personal power this game is by far a masterpiece.

The Nintendo 64 has been known for it many games where the best way to play them is with your friends and family and Super Smash Bros is one of those games where the fun is when you have more people to play with.

The graphics are very impressive on the Nintendo 64 as each character is very well design like they were on their respect games fro the Nintendo 64 plus great level design which honors games like "Super Mario Bros" and "Star Fox". Music is very awesome with each level having it own special theme song. The controls work all very well done make it easy to pick up to play.

The game really shows on the game play with hours of game play fun you would be disappointed with the game because it superb game play is why the Nintendo 64 was a masterpiece.

I give Super Smash Bros an 10 out of 10

Classic fighting game for Nintendo 64
chribren18 October 2013
"Super Smash Bros" is a 1999 fighting game for Nintendo 64, and is the first in the SSB-franchise, followed by "Super Smash Bros. Melee" for Gamecube and "Super Smash Bros. Brawl" for Wii, as well as one for Wii U 2014 which I'm waiting for.

This game simply doesn't have a specific plot in it, but the premise of the game is the fact 12 popular video game characters like Mario, Donkey Kong, Link and Pikachu fight each other. Four of these characters are unlockable.

In the 1-player mode, the player selects a character and fight various other characters until he/she meets the seemingly villainous Master Hand. Also, there is a practice mode where the character has to board the platforms or break the targets in fastest possible time.

Funny with this game is that unlike traditional fighting games like the "Tekken" and the "Street Fighter" games, this game allows you to go freely in any stage available in the game, pick up several items (Pokeball, Hammer, Motion Sensor Bomb etc.) to be used against any opponents, and even make sure the opponent gets knocked out of the stage.

Even though you get to unlock everything which are to be unlocked in the game, and eventually complete it 100%, it doesn't mean the game is finished for good. The fun itself is unlimited; Up to four players can still play the VS. Mode and fight each other, or you can do the single-player mode again if you wish.

Such a classic N64-game which I think will be remembered by fans of this game. My overall rating is definitely a 10/10.

Awesome fighting game
Op_Prime2 June 2000
Everyone's favorite N64 characters battle it out where anything goes. The game features the best of Nintendo: Mario, Luigi, Link, Yoshi, Fox McCloud, Pikachu and Captain Falcon. They even bring back the old favorites: Samus and Kirby. They sneak in Jigglypuff as well. It's fun to play as the Nintendo characters in a fighting game, rather than the Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat characters. It's refreshing. This is a great game.

Excellent game!
The_Light_Triton3 February 2006
This is a 10/10 game, regardless that it's outdated. mainly because it's a good game to pop in when you're really bored. Even after you've earned everything, beaten everything, it's very fun.

So, In Super Smash bros, you get a choice of all the Nintendo characters and send them out into an arena. the idea is to knock the opponent out of the arena. in single player mode, you Fight several opponents and it leads you all the way to the ultimate warrior - the master hand.

This game was a Hit when it came out. everyone from all over the world played it everyday - until Super Smash bros Melee hit the shelves. Melee added a lot of features which might complicate the series, but it is still a fun game.

The Smash That Started It All
jeremycrimsonfox3 December 2019
The first game I ever owned for the Nintendo 64, Super Smash Bros. is the first installment of the series, and it is good.

Here, you get 12 characters (4 needing to be unlocked) to fight with, which ranks from Mario himself to Link, the hero from The Legend Of Zelda, to Star Fox leader Fox McCloud, to the Pokémon known as Pikachu. As for the story of why these Nintendo heroes are beating each other senseless: there is no story, just a cutscene where the characters are plush toys brought to life by Master Hand, who serves as the final boss of the single player mode. But who needs a story when the game offers you and the buddy to choose your favorite Nintendo hero and battle it out to see who is better.

Each character has three special attacks, which are easy to perform, and each of the nine available stages has their own hazards. Also, there are items and weapons that spawn during each fight that can be used, from melee weapons like the Star Rod and the Baseball Bat, to trap items like bumpers and mines, to even Maxim Tomatoes and Heart Containers that are used to heal damage. Other than fighting, there are two bonus stages: Break The Targets and Board The Platforms, where you try to destroy all targets or activate all platforms and get a good time. While it does pale in comparison to its sequels in terms of content, it is still a fun way to waste time with friends, and without this, the sequels would not exist.

Good start
ThunderKing64 August 2021
There was Mortal Kombat, Street Figthers then came Smash Bros.

SSB is a game where characters from various games come together and smash each other. In other words fight. It was different/unique because you got to see Pokemon fight Link or Mario fight DK. For a fighting game it was more fun than the basic boring Street Fighters and Mortal Kombat.

Overall, a good start to a franchise that peaked at Brawl then basically became non-existent during the Switch era.

Fun Game
Overlord-424 June 2000
Well, I thought IMDb only does movies, not video games! Anyway, Smash Bros is a great game. Great multiplayer, graphics, but there should be at least 2 characters from each game. (excluding the mario bros and pokemon) My fav character is Link, very high attack, multiple attacks, effects adjacent enemies, good specials but medium speed, and bad jumps. If you play this game again after a year or 2, you'll be addicted to it like crazy for 2 months (like me).

Best N64 Game Ever!
scooterscoots21 March 2005
Warning: Spoilers
This game is awesome. Compile all of your favorite n64 into one game, give them their trademark moves: Mario= fireball. Kirby=steal opponents main move. Samus= charger gun. link=sword. you get the picture. They took basic levels from each game and created 9 unique and creative levels. They have a creative storyline in story mode. Interesting practice levels: break the targets and board the platforms. Then they have a program where you can tell the computer what to do= stand evade attack...etc. Then, last but not least, great multi player. You can play with bots and other friends to see whose the best, inside the ring. Go whip out an N64 buy super smash brothers off ebay and enjoy hours of fun!

Wasn't as good as I thought
Crescent-619 August 2000
I was very excited at getting this game, but after I beat it in less than an hour, I was thinking that flushing $50 down the toilet was probably more fun. The only fun and challenging thing about this game was to unlock the secret characters.

After watching quite a few kids play this game, I decided that 6-10 year olds are most likely to enjoy this game. Some might get obsessed too, you know.

This game certainly isn't worth buying. But if you're really interested in this game, rent it instead.

Worst Fighter Ever!
Pat-8827 June 1999
This game is crap compared to all the other fighting games out there. Yes, the graphics are cool. But it less fun. A video game can't be good, if it can't have any fun into it.

There's less characters to fight and it's got a poor A.I. I beat the game in one hour. Not pretty fun; multiplayer mode gets old after awhile. The goldeneye multiplayer mode is much better. I really don't know why this is one of the best games of all-time.

Don't bother buying this game, it's worth to rent it. If you got nothing else to do in your free time. This game is as bad as Nintendo's other game, Mario Party. It's that boring.
