A film by João Sodré. A must see. A world music "primitif" - or is it "avant la letter"? It catapulted Cesária Évora to an international career. For the first time, the rest of the world listened to Funaná, Batuko, Finaçom, Aboio and other genres till then unheard out of the Cape-Verde's archipelago. Even there, forbidden for centuries under Portuguese colonial rule, it survived through the resilience of this beautiful people, striving to survive in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. And making music to dance to. The Director captures the soul of the islands (the film title translates to "The Soul rests", part of a poem that goes on to "... the body goes") and of it's amazing music. The Author likes to say that this film genre is "non-fiction" rather than documentary.
