This was one messed up movie...
GillianS11 February 2001
So I'm watching IFC's Short Film Collection and this comes on.It starts out like a cutesy kid movie about this sweet old man that owns an antique show and his beloved clown. Then the clown comes to life and starts killing people, what is THAT about? Despite the completely bizarre story, it was nevertheless an incredibly intriguing short film. The slide show style was something I'd never seen before and it really made for a different experience since there was really no MOVEMENT on screen, only stills. The dialogue-free narration was also interesting and made for a 'book-like' feeling to the movie, like a story being read to you. However, due to the graphic nature of the plot I would not recommend it for the faint of heart, only die hard indie fans.

Sparkles rules!

I absolutely LOVE this film. I love watching the short film collections on IFC, and this one is easy to miss because it's the very last one. I love how it starts out as sweet and innocent, then TWIST! You never expect what happens to happen in a million years. The funniest part is the chainsaw, because Sparkles appears out of nowhere accompanied by a loud chainsaw sound. And his accent adds a great touch. Then you get another twist at the end. This film is very entertaining. If you have a good sense of humor, you'll like it.

I Love this Short

OMG This is one of the funniest short movies EVER. I first saw it on IFC's Short Film Colllection a few years back, and I fell in love with it. My sister and I even taped it and we still say quotes from Das Clown like "Then A gust of wind.......". It hasn't been on recently so if anyone knows when it's going to be on leave a message on this website. Anyway It's about a toy maker who has an evil clown doll who kills him, and the policeman, but there's a big surprise at the end ( you're going to be spending the entire 8 minutes wondering. LOL. Every time I think of this movie I laugh inside so yeah it's funny, and ridiculous, and AMAZING AT LIFE.

Quirky and Fun!
njscreenwriter2 February 2010
I first saw this in college back in 2001 and thought it was one of the funniest short films I've ever seen.

Some people will find this movie funny, others maybe not. You just have to recognize that it's intended to quirky and over the top melodramatic. John Popper does a great job narrating, the sound fx were great, and of course the slideshow/bedtime story approach is an interesting combination. And then of course there's the evil spirits thrown in for good measure.

It's barely a ten minute film - take the time and watch it. It's worth it!

Like a big hug.

I saw this a few months ago and thought it was the funniest thing that I had seen in quite some time. Told as if it were one of the filmstrips you watched in elementary school (you know, that one kid was always supposed to hit the button to change the picture but never would, and yet he always got chosen), this is the story of a sweet old man who doesn't follow one of the horror rules: never read out of the strange book in another language. His clown doll (who bleeds Pepto!)comes to life and tomfoolery immediately ensues. John Popper does some great narration as well.

Whoever this Brown character is, he needs to do more stuff. 10/10.

A positive spin on the killer clown genre
harsley57 May 2001
This slide-show presentation contains no movements or dialogue but there is a super plenty amount of blood. It contains a surprise ending that may take away from the believability of the show, but I am told that all of the facts within it are true. This twenty minute short was able to do what the Puppet Master movies couldn't do with nineteen full feature films. The special effects of this movie are really extra good when you stop and consider how none of it has any motion. It is easy to watch to because it beeps when the slide is supposed to be changed, which is something what was quite useful to me. I will give it several stars (at this point I am undecided as to how many I will give)

Great Movie

I really enjoyed this movie. It is really well done. The way they use the slide show and narration is ingenious. It starts out like a children's story and then goes into a horror film, and then ends as a romance. Also I enjoyed the dark humor, I find myself laughing each time I watch it. It also is cool that John Popper (Blues Traveler) is the narrator. I would recommend you see this movie. Just do a search for it, you won't regret it.

HI-LARIOUS

If you have a fear of clowns, run from this movie! If not, settle back, relax and enjoy - a staple of the Independent Film Channel, Das Clown is very funny. Remember those filmstrips you saw in school? Brown resurrects the art form and with John Popper's homey narration, a cult classic is born.
