James A. Fitzpatrick sends the Technicolor cameras under the supervision of cinematographer Winton Hoch to take some wonderful pictures of Bangkok, in what we nowadays call Thailand. The pictures are then sent back to Hollywood, to be edited to their advantage. Then Fitzpatrick adds his narration, to make it seems as dull and boring as possible, by a shouted recitation of random facts.
Don't get me wrong. The pictures are quite lovely, and certainly not the sort of thing I see everyday, even wandering around the varied architecture of New York City. Even the slightly degraded prints that TCM shows of this episode of the long-running travelogue series is quite lovely. It's Fitzpatrick's narration of the movie that seems dull, amidst the pagodas, canals and exotic dancers. However, if a picture is worth a thousand words, then perhaps Mr. Fitzpatrick might have chosen to let Bangkok speak for itself.
