Sheela Carries The Film
'Agniputhri' tackles the taboo issue of how the Indian society (particularly the higher class) looks down upon prostitutes even long after they have left their professions. While there is some melodrama in the film, the issue still stands relevant for today's India. I think the director also introduces the suspense element quite cleverly. Once Rajendran brings his new bride, Sindhu, home, we see the resentment of his family towards her. While we initially think that the reason of their hatred is due to her former profession, we also get the hint that there's a secret and there's a lot more than what we're lead to believe. At the same time, we see a former prostitute Bijli, living a happily married life with a Rickshaw driver. The contrast is very well demonstrated. However, the director could have focused a little less on this track. Prem Nazir plays his part as naive but devoted husband very well. Sheela carries the entire film. A difficult part to play but she demonstrates her understanding for the character. T.S Muthayya is alright. He has already played similar roles before. The songs are beautiful but a few could have been left out. Overall, in spite of its flaws, it's a good film that interestingly tackles relevant issues.
