The long shots of the baptism scene originally appeared in King Vidor's Hallelujah (1929), an MGM film. (MGM also distributed the Our Gang films at this time.) The singing in the baptism scene was performed by the Dixie Jubilee Singers.
This is one of the Our Gang shorts in which a solar eclipse is featured as part of the plot. The local black community have gathered at a lake to conduct baptisms during the mid-day darkness. This may have been inspired by the relatively recent, near-total (90%) eclipse seen in Southern California on September 10, 1923. An eclipse is also featured in the earlier, silent Our Gang short Spook Spoofing (1928).
