- In this final episode, the staff of the 4077th M*A*S*H unit find their lives no less hectic despite the fact that it appears that the war may soon be over. Until then, the staff must deal with events like Hawkeye has been temporarily institutionalized due to a nervous breakdown, Sidney is treating him. Hawkeye drove through the officer's club with a jeep and earlier in the day tried to operate on a patient without an anesthetic. Turns out 4077 crew was returning on a bus from a day at the beach. They picked up some locals and wounded GIs. The GIs ask for the bus to be hidden in the bushes to hide from a Chinese patrol nearby. everybody had to stay quiet. One local Korean had a baby who kept crying and Hawkeye yelled at her to keep the baby quiet. In desperation, she smothered her own baby. This broke Hawkeye down as he blames himself for the baby's death. Sidney asks Hawkeye to return to the MASH 4077 OR asap.
Winchester has finally found people who share his taste in classical music. A Chinese military band surrenders to Winchester when he is out on a stroll and he brings them back to the 4077. Winchester is astonished when the Chinese band plays Mozart in captivity at the 4077. So, Winchester takes it upon himself to teach the Chinese to play more classic music from the Victorian era. Eventually the prisoners are taken away for prep for a prisoner swap after the peace deal is signed.
Father Mulcahy has been permanently deafened in a mortar attack. 4077 comes under enemy attack and Mulcahy risks his life to free the PoWs who are right in the line of fire. The POws escape, but Mulcahy takes a direct hit from a mortar. BJ treats Mulcahy and figures he has lost his hearing. Mulcahy is afraid that he will be sent home and 40 kids at the orphanage will be without support. He gets BJ to promise that he wont reveal anything to anyone.
As the peace talks progress, the fighting intensifies to grab more real estate before the signing. MASH 4077 sees a flood of refugees and has to set up a POW camp in the middle to hold prisoners. A US army tank tears through a part of the 4077 before Margaret figures that the crew is injured. Margaret is happy as her dad has arranged a desk job for her in Tokyo, Winchester is worried as his application as the head of thoracic surgery at Boston Mercy hospital may be turned down as his rival is good with politics. Margaret has a friend of the family on the board of the Mercy hospital and sends a telegram recommending Winchester. Winchester gets a letter confirming the job to him. He finds from Klinger that Margaret wrote a letter to her uncle recommending him, but instead of being thankful he is angry at Margaret for maligning his medical pedigree.
BJ gets orders to go home, but Potter is reluctant to release him without a replacement. BJ promises to get him a top rate replacement. BJ finds a replacement who will arrive the next day. Klinger finds him a flight out of Kimpo in the next 40 mins. BJ hitches a chopper ride, while Hawkeye is still at the mental hospital. Just as he leaves, Klinger gets word that BJ's travel orders have been withdrawn. But Potter decides to sit on it for an hour to give BJ time to catch his flight.
Meanwhile Soon Lee is still trying to find her parents. A Korean person in 4077 shows up wearing her mother's shawl and she figures her family is at the refugee camp at Chorwan (that's where the woman came from). she begs Klinger to taker her there himself as this is her last chance to unite with her family. Klinger finds that Soon-Lee has left on her own to find her family at Chorwon which is at the center of intense fighting. When Chorwon is under US control, Klinger travels there by jeep and finds Soon-Lee and begs her to come back to the 4077. She agrees and they become a couple. Soon, Klinger proposes to Soon-Lee.
Hawkeye returns to camp only to find BJ is gone. The Chinese keep shelling the 4077 as they have a tank in the middle of the camp. So, Hawk gets into the tank and drives it a few hundred yards away from the 4077. All the fighting starts a forest fire which is headed straight for the 4077 and Potter commands a bug-out. A chopper brings in the replacement to BJ and it is none other than BJ himself. He recounts how he was caught in Guam and returned to Korea.
At last, the ceasefire is declared and the staff must come to grips with the fact that this time in their lives is over. 4077 is ordered back to their original location at Ouijanbou and they come back to a charred and deserted camp. The war costed the US $22BN. 71,500 UN forces killed in combat, Missing 83,263, wounded 250,000. On the commie side 1,347,000 killed or wounded. 400,000 Korean civilians also killed. BJ is afraid of saying good-bye to Hawkeye. Already USA is planning its offensive in Vietnam to stop the spread of communism. Winchester learns that the PoW truck was hit by shells and all 5 of the Chinese musicians died.
Mulcahy questions God about his purpose since he cant figure out what good is a dead priest. Potter hosts a dinner the day before MASh is to be dismantled and everyone talks about what they will do next in their lives. Winchester will go to the Boston Mercy hospital, Margaret will quit the army and work in the states, Potter, BJ and Hawkeye will just go home. Klinger decides to stay in Korea with Soon-Lee till she finds her family.
The next day Mulcahy marries off Klinger and Soon-Lee. Soon the MASH 4077 is dismantled and folks say their goodbyes to each other. Margaret and Hawkeye share a long kiss. BJ and Hawkeye salute Potter. BJ finally says his goodbye to Hawkeye. Hawkeye leaves on a chopper and BJ rides his bike to Seoul.
