Lacking insight in human emotions
Ace_of_Hearts19 January 2004
Warning: Spoilers
BIG SPOILERS AHEAD

'Dil Kya Kare' is alright. And that is pretty much all it is. The story is about - BIG SPOILERS - a married couple (Ajay and Mahima) who have a young daughter they adopted when she was a baby. Out of the blue her birth mother Kajol shows up. Mahima takes her in and lets her spend time with her daughter. I found this very commendable of her character as I would have been majorly threatened and probably wouldn't have let Kajol stay in my house for so long. As the story unfolds we discorver that Ajay had a one night stand with Kajol and he's the real father of his daughter. When Mahima finds out she flies into a blind rage and walks out on the lot of them.

What I found very disturbing in this movie is the way human emotions were portrayed. -BIG SPOILERS- Mahima wouldn't let her husband explain. Ajay wouldn't go over to Mahima begging for her forgiveness, but rather seemed to want a wife, a daughter and his former lover. His heartlessness especially shined through when he was willing to sacrifice his daughter to get his wife back. I mean, it says something when the adopted mother seems to care more for the child than the child's real father. And no-one seemed to care about the kid, not even Kajol who put her feelings first by expressing the desire to rip the kid from her family and surroundings. And as far as the kid is concerned, that was THE calmest reaction I have seen on film of a child who just found out her mother is not her mother.

All in all, I had expected more. The characters didn't seem real to me. They were... for lack of a better word... out of proportion.

Ajay- Kajol's first film after marriage and a damn squib
silvan-desouza10 November 2009
Prakash Jha earlier made realistic films like MRITHYUDAND and others but this was an attempt by him to make a commercial film

God knows why in the same year too Govind Nihalini another realistic film director tried a commercial film THAKSHAK with Ajay again

The movie as i said tries too hard to balance both sides

Problem is sadly the weak script

The family scenes are too convulted while the romance between Ajay and Mahima isn't convincing

The drama between Ajay- Kajol and Mahima is well brought out at times but overall the film lacks a strong script and direction

Direction by Prakash Jha is ordinary Music is good

Amongst actors Ajay looks lost and is typecast as in those days when he played the husband in HDDCS and this role had no novelty for him Mahima shreiks too often and is okay Kajol is the best here the rest are okay Chandrachur Singh is a miscast

The heart says it all

Prakash Jha's Dil Kya Kare is overall an interesting and moving dramatic feature. The film starts with some rather twisted proceedings and works as a semi-thriller. It is later when it efficiently turns into a serious drama dealing with the complexity of marriage, relationships and family values, provoking different moral thoughts from its viewers. Dil Kya Kare is made quite convincingly, and the narrative style is generally very good, though as expected from Prakash Jha, he mixes the usual Hindi film ingredients with realistic situations. The film does tend to drag at points, mainly because some of its sub-plots and attempts at comedy are redundant distractions from the main issue. It is of course Jha's effective portrayal of the characters, their trials and tribulations, their conflicts and their ultimate obligation to solve their dilemmas and take crucial decisions, that elevates it to an altogether higher level.

The acting is definitely one of the reasons Dil Kya Kare remains steadily believable and riveting. Ajay Devgan is very good in a controlled performance as a man torn between his wife and his past lover, unable to choose one. Kajol delivers another excellent and heartbreaking performance in a role that is contrary to her own image of an assertive, headstrong and vibrant girl. As Nandita, she is unusually inhibited and subdued and plays the role with subtlety, sincerity and depth that make the viewers really sympathise with her character. Mahima Chaudhry is the complete opposite of Kajol here, but hers is perhaps the most impressive performance in the film. She is terrific in an impulsive, unrestrained and compelling portrayal of a woman who is defied by her own insecurity and fear of losing her family. Chandrachur Singh is given very little scope to make an impact and he is okay.

Dil Kya Kare wavers between a thought-provoking drama and a typical tearjerker, but it is effective enough and is generally engaging and touching. The music is also very well composed by Jatin-Lalit. The title song and "Do Dilon Ki" are my favourite songs - very melancholic and melodious. Towards the end, the movie becomes very intense and as mentioned, the climax may certainly extract different moral views from the audience. The ending is really poignant and sad, but it brings the film to its much-awaited solution, which is not perfect but it is probably the way most people would want it to be. Lovers of Hindi family dramas will most certainly love this movie. I recommend you to watch Dil Kya Kare, mainly for its innovative story and convincing performances from the main cast. It is not flawless, but it is a worthy picture nonetheless.

Good film, watch it on DVD

Kajol looks beautiful in this movie and Ajay Devgan has reached a new high in acting. He might not be a pretty boy of the big screen but he sure can exude empathy to his audience. The girl playing Nehu is one to watch out for in future films too.

The film has a more than decent gharelu storyline with a tear-jerky type ending. It was shocking to see Mahima cry so much, she probably broke a record for most litres of water shed in one film.

Definitely a recommended film and though it has no outstanding songs, the settings for two of them are the best I have seen for a while. Its a good thing I saw this on DVD as video probably won't do the songs justice. I gave it 7/10 overall.

VERY underrated movie

Honestly don't know why this movie got such low reviews. It was a really emotional movie, not the typical melodramatics, but realistic family emotions. Great movie over all.

Very emotional movie, deserved more attention

Shows the power of Indian movies, in terms of respect and love. Kajol's end decision defines brave. The male's past decisions would of turned most against him these days, but all their emotions were so powerful with amazing acting.

Kajol is the star!
azetkhataieva21 May 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I have until now only watched three movies starring Kajol and her real-life husband Ajay Devgan together, and this is one of them. This is a very charming and lovable movie that had very sad moments in it too.The great performances of the love-triangle in this one was exceptional and i just adore Kajol, she is the greatest Bollywood Queen in my heart. The songs are beautiful and the plot very exciting.Kajols end in this one are so sad i cried.Fate brought her much pain, and even then she lost the two people she most loved. In my opinion Ajay's character Anand really loved Kajol´s character Nandita. If he hadn't been married he would have choosed her,but because of his noble and loyal nature he couldn't,and i really respected him for that.
