Black Feather Hats

This movie is an early example of James White's genre of Looking At the The Backs of People's Hats As They Stand Around. A master of this variety of short film, he apparently so overawed his competitors that no one would dare imitate him. "That's a James White movie you're trying to do, isn't it? Lacks his sense of je ne sais quoi."

Here the effect is spoiled by a steamship -- presumably the Coptic, but it might be the Staten Island Ferry --- pulling slowly out to harbor. Actually, it might be pulling into harbor or just standing there, as there is no detectable motion. But who cares? It's a movie and you get to see peoples' backs and ships!

Some women appear to be wearing the tops of skyscrapers at first glance, but it turns out to be feathers.

S.S. Coptic at Dock (1897)

Edison was good at sending cameramen to various ships and filming various actions. The S.S. Coptic got a handful of films and this one here gives us a cameraman on the actual deck as the ship pulls off. This gives us a view point of being on the deck and seeing the people watching you leave. There's certainly nothing ground-breaking with this film but I find these series interesting to watch because they give you a view point from so many different aspects. Others in the series include watching the ship leave from the dock and another from the harbor. Again, there's nothing great about this but fans of these early movies should enjoy it.
