Warning: Spoilers
An entry in the Scotland Yard series filmed at Merton Park Studios and produced by Alec C. Snowden. A body is discovered in a culvert near a country village with the face badly marred. Supt. Carron of Scotland Yard works with the local police to identify the body and discover the murderer. It could be that of missing mad Thomas but the corpse died eleven days previously and mad Thomas only went missing two days previously. Dogged police and forensic work ferrets out the truth,

Directed and written efficiently by Ken Hughes with good location photography this is a good entry in this series of short films about Scotland Yard. The short running time helps the pace so there is no padding. The cast give solid performances. Robert Cawdron as the police sergeant almost steals the film. Narration as usual is given by Manchester born criminologist Edgar Lustgarten.

The Candlelight Murder

This episode called The Candlelight Murder could easily be described as CSI: Scotland Yard.

A body is discovered in a stream in the village of Bramlington. The face has been badly bashed in and the man has been dead for over week.

The police think it might be loner mad Sam Thomas but he has only been missing for a few days. The candle light in his house has been on at night.

Forensics recreate the dead man's face. That he smoked a clay pipe. There was metal powder on his clothes. Near the stream were footprints of a man that were size 11.

Enough clues to eek out a few suspects. There were rumours that Thomas had a hidden fortune. The police think that the murderer has been visiting the house at night looking for the hidden fortune.

A nice lean mystery with flashes of some thought put in the way some of the shots were edited.

The third in the Scotland Yard series of mysteries. At this time the series was still to take fire and included several little-known names among its cast. This episode is a little stagey, with too many studio interiors revealing how cheaply they were produced. However, the plot moves inexorably towards its resolution, aided and abetted by Edgar Lustgarten.
