This past weekend, Mike and I had the opportunity to attend the Wizard-World Comic-Con in Richmond Virginia. The event was held in The Greater Richmond Convention Center from Friday, September 9th-Sunday, September 11th. Below you can read all the great takeaways from the event.
Atmosphere:
Wizard-World had a family-friendly feel to it. Not that other Cons do not cater to families, but the layout of the booths, activities, and Cosplayers all seemed to reflect that feel. There were a good number of families there, many who came in Cosplay together, which was awesome to see the love of the genre passed down from generation to generation.
Continuing with the family-friendly tone, everything associated with the convention was on one floor, much like Hero's-Con, but in a smaller area. The set-up of the booths were sectioned into categories for the most part (comics, merchandise, clothing, gaming, celebrities, etc.), which were easy to navigate.

Not to belittle any of the below games but you really should be playing "Bioshock Infinite" because it really is quite excellent. Anywho, if shooting up people in Cloud City ain't your bag maybe you'll want to check out some of this week's releases.

The element of player choice was one of the features that made Telltale Games' "The Walking Dead" one of the most critically acclaimed games of 2012. It was an even more meaningful achievement when this choice-driven game essentially reached the same conclusion for all players. The game succeeds in the choices during the journey and less on the anticipation of the outcome of the choices. One of the more significant choices was during the game's second episode where you had to decide on the fates of Doug and Carley. It was the starting point of the Gdc 2013 talk, 'Saving Doug: Empathy, Character, and Choice in The Walking Dead', hosted by "The Walking Dead" creative director, Jake Rodkin and director/writer, Sean Vanaman. Rosa Thomas, a ten-year veteran and Principal Program Manager at Microsoft, spoke at Gdc in San Francisco about the SmartGlass experience that Microsoft has been rolling out slowly on the Xbox 360. First announced at E3 last year, Microsoft rolled out the service with Windows 8 this past October, and plans to ramp up what the experience offers in the coming months.
So what is it? On the basic level, SmartGlass is Microsoft's proprietary Second Screen experience that works (currently) in conjunction with the Xbox 360, offering a second screen full of information and functions on the iOS, Android, Windows 8, and Windows Phone. Right now it only works with a handful of games, including "Halo 4" and "Forza Horizon," some of the Xbox 360 video apps, including HBO Go, and a smattering of newly released movies.

The Team Ninja hack and slash will be getting a demo in time with its April 2 release date along with some SmartGlass bells and whistles for the Xbox 360 port.
The SmartGlass stuff--Microsoft's name for second screen functionality--is mostly community-focused, allowing you to check your rankings among other "Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge" players as well as checking out uploaded videos to get tips and learn tricks. Namco offered something similar with their HTML5 enabled World Tekken Federation around the launch of "Tekken Tag Tournament 2" although that was done in part to facilitate teams and tournaments for the fighter.
"Razor's Edge" was released for the Wii U back in November, bringing an update to the game's battle system and AI, while adding more playable characters.

Both games are getting "Plus" added to their titles as Tecmo Koei and Team Ninja bring Vita-specific features to the fighter and the hack and slash early next year.
I'm taking this as kind of a good news/bad news thing: the Vita has unexpectedly become a fine place to play a certain kind of fighting game (particularly those without six-button control schemes). And in spite of some reservations, I really liked "Dead or Alive 5," so seeing it make the jump to portable is good news. And while 2008's "Ninja Gaiden 2" was a mess, if the first "Ninja Gaiden Sigma" on the PS3 proved anything, it's that Team Ninja can take and synthesize fan feedback in remakes/rereleases of their popular titles, plus in spite of its many, many issues, "Ninja Gaiden 2" offered the kind of punishing difficulty and technical combat we've come to expect from the series.
So what's got me all worried?...

How big? According to Eurogamer, big enough to require an eight-person writing team which will include lead writer Mac Walters. The untitled Dlc is being developed by BioWare's Edmonton studio, and according to one of the company's designers, that number represents pretty much the entire writing team there.
But BioWare's not just throwing a bunch of writers at the next story set (presumably) in and around "Mass Effect 3."
Seth Green is making his "Mass Effect 3" Dlc debut in a return to his role as Normandy pilot/resident joker, Joker. Also returning is "Mass Effect 3" composer Sam Hulick, whose work can also be found in "Baldur's Gate" and "Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad" as well as "Mass Effect 2."
So what will the next piece of Dlc entail? It's anyone's guess, but each one has dealt with the same problem of getting their hooks into a player who may or may...

"Ninja Gaiden: Razer's Edge" on Wii U has been touted as the definitive version of "Ninja Gaiden III", but it seems Team Ninja isn't finished just yet. Today, during the North American Nintendo Direct broadcast, Nintendo revealed that two new characters are "coming soon" via a free download, one of whom you may recognize from an entirely separate franchise.
Nintendo started the Ninja Gaiden: Razor's Edge talk by highlighting many of new features the game brings to the table, but things got interesting when they started tling about the game's characters. Momiji, who's appeared in previous Ninja Gaiden titles, is the first downloadable character we'll see, but the second Dlc character joining the ranks just so happens to be Kasumi from the the Dead or Alive series.
Much like the current option of playing through the game as either Ayane or Ryu, players will also be able to do so with the two new characters.

With the Wii U's launch finally upon us, anyone that was thinking about picking up the console has some tough choices to make. Do you get the Standard or Deluxe edition? Are you going to make a new Mii or transfer one over? Where are you going to put the console? Are you going to use Nintendo TVii? And so on and so forth... Regardless of the answers to all of those questions, the most important decision when picking up any new game console is always what game should you to get to go with it. Some consoles have much better launch line ups than others, and the Wii U's is actually packed with titles that should keep most gamers satisfied into the new year. If you're strapped for funds, and can barely afford the console itself, here are our recommendations for the five strongest releases for you to consider purchasing alongside your Wii U.

For the past few months it seemed as if we'd never get a definitive answer from Nintendo on which games are actually going to available day-one when the Wii U launches in November. Thankfully, the Big N surprised us all this morning by releasing a list of games confirmed for November 18th and fans will be happy to learn we have 23 titles to choose from.
"We're making sure that Wii U owners will have great games to play from the moment they open the box, and that a steady stream of fun new games is always on the way," said Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo of America's president and COO. "We have something for everyone, from new franchises to creative new approaches to familiar favorites."
First party titles from Nintendo, such as New Super Mario Bros. U, will be available day-one at launch, along with some surprise third-party heavy-hitters, including Call of Duty: Black Ops II.

Welcome back for more E3 2012 coverage from yours truly. Sometimes I get the royal treatment and sometimes I just get a quick snapshot of upcoming games. The games below were ones that I had limited exposure to, but I wanted to write a little blurb for each regardless, enjoy.
Dead or Alive 5 (Tecmo Koei, PS3 version)
Tecmo Koei booth at E3 2012
I had a 15 minute demo with Dead or Alive 5 on the PS3. I’m not going to lie, I’m not the biggest Dead or Alive fan, but I have played a decent amount of the previous installments to see the differences in this latest one. Probably one of the largest staples in the Doa series has been its graphics and they sure are pretty in Doa 5. Everything from the beautifully rendered (and destructible) environments to the character models, Doa 5 is pure eye candy. The character models also take...

The Nintendo E3 2012 (Electronic Entertainment Expo) press conference mostly highlighted Nintendo's upcoming games in a painfully scripted presentation. Mostly. Somewhat. Nintendo's Satoru Iwata had already detailed the next generation Wii U, accessories and Miiverse with a pre-E3 reveal on Sunday.
HuffPost Tech's Jason Gilbert believes that Microsoft still owns the livingroom with the Xbox360 and Kinect, but Nintendo would like a larger chunk of your living room attention, and they illustrated some of the ways they plan to get it during their E3 press conference.
Legendary game designer Shigero Miyamoto of Mario, Donky Kong, Zelda, Star Fox and Pikmin fame said of the new Wii, "In order for it to be a complete entertainment device, central to the living room, it had to be independent of the television." Miamoto continued, "We wanted to make that (GamePad screen) the first thing people come to when they go into the living room.

More than any other presentation, Nintendo's was super-focused on new titles for both its new platform the Wii U and the 3Ds.
The conference kicked off with Shigeru Miyamoto explaining some of the vision behind the Wii U controller, with the focus on a dedicated personal screen for each players. The big idea is using the second screen for innovative game functionality, Miyamoto saying that you wouldn't have to wait to turn on your controller to weigh yourself in Wii Fit

It's an urban legend that Swat Kats: The Radical Squadron was cancelled in the middle of its second season with three episodes unfinished because Ted Turner himself caught an episode and thought it too violent for kids. While there's no way of knowing if this is actually true (no reason was ever given for its cancellation), it's amusing to keep the legend alive, and believable enough because, while Swat Kats is hardly a hotbed of senseless brutality, it is edgier compared to its contemporaries—especially politically correct goody-goody shows like Captain Planet and the Planeteers. Despite the fact that it's populated with anthropomorphized cats, it deals in pretty straightforward asskicking.
Its lack of ridiculousness is probably why the show, despite being popular at the time (my wee self watched it religiously, as did other boys my age I knew), never took hold of 90's pop history the way Captain Planet did.
