The best racing game for the SNES
rocco-14 August 2001
I had so much fun playing this game. Racing is fun, and Battleing is the best. You can battle for hours!!! I play this game practicly everyday. I got all my friends hooked to this game. (both SNES & N64 versions.) Even as I speak my friends are playing this game, and having a good time.(I can hear them laughing.

Very enjoyable once you get the hang of it

Once you get past the cheap AI and focus on gameplay, it's super fun. The courses are challenging and well-designed, and mastering them is very rewarding. Plus, you have to give this game credit for popularizing the kart-racing genre.

An excellent mix of racing game and Mario fun that still works over 15 years later

Despite having bailed out just before the Gamecube for reasons of supposed maturity but also video game apathy, I had started gaming with the original orange hand-held Donkey Kong, progressed onto the NES, then the SNES, then onto the N64. The SNES was the console that featured this game and it is the one SNES game that I keep coming back to when I get a chance. The N64 version was not much cop and only continues to confirm how much I love this original.

The game is split into two parts - the various types of races and time trials and the two-player battle mode. The races are visually simplistic by today's standards of course but they were and remain both challenging and fun. The game is nicely weighted throughout with the courses and cups building the difficulty level while the jumps between cc class require you to be able to get and maintain speed. The items are useful but, importantly, avoidable – even the dreaded red shell can be evaded with a bit of skill and a healthy dose of good fortune. The courses are a real good mix and use the standards of the Mario games really well. They are also mostly skill based and mean that, if you are very good in some of them you can open up a real healthy lead, although in others the amount of obstacles mean that it does get frustrating the odd time. The way the characters all follow the same order all the time is a bit of a bother but I suppose it does allow for competition to be maintained – although it is fun to try and "take out" the computer chosen leader and make him finish the cup outside of the points. The tracks are mostly shaped like race tracks and not someone's intestine, which also makes the time trials that much more fun (again, they are skill based).

The battles play out in relatively simple grids with a simple radar system. It is effective and very fun and again requires skill rather than blind storming around; I loved it because it was manic but also allowed for strategy. The characters are fun and the only problem is that everyone I ever played against wanted Koopa – just like me. Toad was a close second but, although the others had their strengths, they also came with their weaknesses whereas Toad and Koopa gave up the strengths in exchange for no one main weakness.

Overall an enjoyable racing game that lends fun and skill really well. I would call it a retro-gaming classic but is it retro if it continues to stand the test of time in terms of pure fun?

The kart game that started it all...
Mzo-328 August 2000
Super Mario Kart for the SNES is one of the best games I've ever played. From the learning curve to the play control to the characters (go koopa troopa!), this one is a definite classic. If you're a fan of any of today's kart titles, know that Nintendo invented the genre with this amazing game. Go get it. Now!

Why the Super Nintendo will live through the ages...
OttoVonB11 June 2007
In the early nineties, it was just not cool not to have this gaming console. Looking back with a, X-Box or Playstation 3 in hand, most consumers might snicker at how primitive that technology was. The joke's on them, for their contempt is cruelly misguided.

Today it appears that most games aim for amazing graphics (that being a relative and short-lived term these days) and seem to think of game-play and durability as a last resort. Yet in 1992, there came a game that rocked the video-gaming world for all the right reasons.

Reprising all the key characters of the Mario Bros platform saga, Mario Kart equipped them with karts, variable strengths and weaknesses, and threw an array of racing tracks and cups at them. The key element here lies not only in the superbly inventive tracks (standard Mario Circuits, slippery Vanilla Lake, eerie Ghost World and ludicrous Rainbow Road) nor the likable characters, but in the ability to blast one another to bits in a variety of ways.

Beyond the 20 racing tracks (arranged in 4 cups, each playable in 3 widely different levels of difficulty) playable as championships, time trials or duels, it also boasts a delirious battle mode, where each player has his kart fitted with 3 balloons his enemy must pop in order to win. What makes the game so enduring is that a relative amount of precision is required for attacks to succeed (the polar opposite of the "upgraded" Mario Kart for Nintendo 64), so there are always new strategies and cray stunts to discover.

A testament to this game's greatness is that you could play it for days on end, where you would have run out of patience ages ago with any given Wii game. Unsurprisingly, the Nintendo 64 version proved to be massive visual overkill, unable to surpass, let alone equal the original.

A pure classic!

The original king of SNES racers!
reddragonhero1725 March 2022
Another classic for the SNES, and one that has stood the test of time in the fun factor. 8 racers (my favorites are Mario and Yoshi) and plenty of different courses with varying challenges, what's not to like? I've spent many countless hours playing this with friends and it stuck with me over the years. Even today I still break it out and play it, it's just that good, even members of the family can join in! Yes we've all moved on, but who cares? This game is still a blast to play even today!

Super Mario Kart
rotchans8 April 2020
This game was very cool because the music was catchy and Rainbow Road was the catchiest I've ever heard. Also, it was better than 7 because the player can't snake like Mario Kart DS. The difficulty is brutally hard or easy if the player gets used to the controls. Why it was brutally hard because drifting. This was the best Mario Kart I've ever played.

Why was this bundled with my 3DS?
Nic098132322 February 2021
On Christmas 2019, I got a New 3DS XL that looked like a SNES. This also had a code so I could get this game for free, and I'm disappointed that THIS is what we got. The turning physics are bad, if you turn for too long you spin out, the courses take 5 laps and it's too easy to run into walls. What a slap in the face. So don't trust this game, don't emulate it, don't search for it, don't mess with it, don't take it on a date, don't feed it, don't clean it, don't believe in it, and just DON'T PLAY IT!

Fun

This game was pretty good. Graphics are good for the type of system it's on (Super Nintendo). Many characters are familiar (Mario, Luigi, the Princess, Toad, Bowser, Donkey Kong Jr, Yoshi and Koopa Troopa). My major complaint with this game is how the order never varies and the same character is always second no matter what. That's why I mainly play the Battle mode part, which is the best.

I wish I could have enjoyed this game but I couldn't
Terryfan31 March 2018
Now I'll admit this is one of those games that everyone loves but I don't. I mean I really try to play it as a kid and I couldn't get the hang of it.

When I got the Super Nintendo Classic Super Mario Kart was appear of the collection part of me was kind of glad it made the list because it is a game that many grew up playing in the 90s on Super Nintendo then I remember that I wasn't very good at it.

I mean the controls are fine for the game but at the same time it just hard to actually get a handle on playing. Often times I found myself just going around begging for help

The graphics are perhaps a big factor to the game on why it was hard for me to play because you can barely tell what's happening on screen. Also the level designs are so ridiculously bad it made you wish they used the graphics from Super Mario World at least in that game you can actually see this one feels like you were going into a snow storm.

The game play is only for playing with friends other than that I found Super Mario Kart is one of those games that was hard to play as a kid and still is as a adult.

What's the point of making a game if it is going to be hard to even see your driver?

I give Super Mario Kart an 4 out of 10

Super Mario Kart!
Movie Nuttball24 August 2004
Super Mario Bros. is one of the most famous video games of all time! The characters, the jumping, the power-ups, and the sure thrill of adventure makes this entire series a fun non-stop playing time! Below is a brief look how I think the game is!

Game Play: The game play is very good. There is really basic controls here and is easy to perform. Novice gamers should have a good time here!

Graphics: The graphics are wonderful. The backgrounds are really beautiful!

Difficulty: The game is easy but as it goes on you''s find out that it will become more difficult!

Music: The music is great! Just fantastic catchy tunes through out the game! In My opinion its some of the best music ever in a video game!

Sound: The sound is great. Nuff said!

Overall: I have always loved Super Mario Brothers! If you like excellent adventure games then I strongly recommend you play this game!

This is one of the worst SNES games
bradleysloan-9426425 April 2021
Going to the left or right and drifting is very tight and i can barely get past the first stage because i always go to the left to much even though i would still be on the track doing the same thing, and the Computer players cheat which is not fun, I cant even get to the end of level 2, I want to like this game but it hasn't aged well and all the other problems i've listed. Play Stunt Race FX if you want a good SNES racer.

Warning: Spoilers
Super Mario kart is awesome! it's worth the time you play it. and battling, well, that is worth even more of your time.

Mario, Luigi, Princess toadstool, toad, Yoshi, DK Jr, bowser, and Koopa troopa, all hop into a go-kart and take it from there. they go to various courses, such as Mario circuit, donut plains, ghost valley, bowser's castle, choco mountain, vanilla lake, koopa troopa beach, and rainbow road. along the way, they pick up coins and items. and they try to hit each other's karts and get ahead of them.

in battle mode, 2 players have 3 balloons on their go-cart. they have to drive around and pop their opponent's balloons before their's get popped. it's fun, and there's plenty of strategy to play on.

this game is awesome, good, and just worth trying. but if you're a more up to date type, get Mario kart 64, or Mario kart, super circuit, or double dash. all of them are great.

One of the best games ever!
darkangel20036 September 2003
I love this game, I still play it now, I can't believe it's 11 years old. It has to be the best multiplayer game ever, rivaled possibly by goldeneye. I would hate to total up the hours i've spent playing this game. Maybe I'm looking at it through rose tint glasses but this has to be one of the best games EVER!!!!
