A fun little journeyman flick with a twisty-turny plot.
=G=22 November 2001
"Sleep Easy Hutch Rimes" sticks Steven Weber at the center of a convoluted, busy plot as a small time womanizing insurance man who wants no more than to keep his business afloat and his bed at the Sleep Easy motel warm while the women in his life have other agendas involving intrigues and murder. What this light drama lacks in big time Hollywood production appurtenances, it makes up for with a clever story which it delivers with a snicker and a sneer. An okay C+ watch.

STV stuff

Steven Weber stars as the title character, and he hardly sleeps easy. An insurance man completely devoid of morals and scruples, he gets caught up in a murder plot against his latest gal pal's husband (a bald Gregg Henry), only it backfires. He later gets caught up in yet another murder-the-spouse plot, this time involving a ravishing but raving lunatic of a woman (played by Gail O'Grady). Then the husband of the first situation comes back into his life, and the husband of the more recent bimbo (Steven Tobolosky) starts pestering our antihero. Weber only has his aging, meek secretary (Swoosie Kurtz) to protect him. Plus he is looking at possible bankruptcy. This dark comedy is largely devoid of laughs, but the violence when it finally erupts is impressive and the strong cursing profound. Also, the finale holds a surprise or two. Plus Weber's at his venal best here.

Sleep Easy, Dear Viewers

The title character isn't the only one who can "sleep easy" in this uneven, aimless effort. In fact, the only thing standing in the way of viewers succumbing to the lure of dreamland is the possibility of their laughing heartily at something that's supposed to be serious.

Great Unknown and Under-rated Movie

I wasn't expecting much from this but as it turned out, it was one of those surprisingly hidden movies that I'd never heard of and it really improved my mood. Swoozy Kurtz rocks as she plays a middle aged "diva" that is hidden behind a prudish wig. It has a lot of twists and turns and you sure can't predict what is going to happen next. It has more than it's share of laughs and surprises. A great and well put together cast. I thought the acting was great and again, it was a lot more than I could have expected. I thought it was a well written, well acted and all around a great movie to find. Compared to the movies rolling out of Hollywood today, I'd give it a 10. Loved the characters.

Promising start but turns silly.

Warning: Spoilers
I watched this on TV. I was sucked in by the first third which set up a believable situation involving strong motivation for an uncivil act. A man is in need of quick cash, a woman needs to escape an abusive husband and a scheme is hatched for them to achieve both of their goals, not to mention continuing their trysts.

However, as the movie goes along it descends into bad acting, a convoluted and unbelievable plot, and an unsatisfying ending. Plot elements are introduced that may be necessary for making this into a feature-length film, but they do not correspond to any believable human behavior. Would you take the time to write documentation for a crime you were about to commit?

This has the feel of a low-budget made-for-TV effort.

A sleepy TV movie which doesn't know where it's going

I doubt that anyone connected with this who hopes to advance his/her career will include this in their resume.

The title refers to the Sleep Easy Motel where Hutch Rimes takes his chosen lady friend of the moment. Jealous and brutal husbands, conniving women, and sundry characters get involved with this and by the end, I for one just didn't care.

It's not the worst I've seen, and it's about as good a way of spending an hour and a half as sitting and twiddling your thumbs.

As far as any talent shown in this is concerned, it appears to be mainly a training exercise.

Nifty little romantic yarn with some violence
ritasky23 January 2005
Having recently seen this movie I think it can be best described as a subtle love story with a surprise ending with a few twists and turns along the way. Although the violence is portrayed as real and graphic, it is so structured in such a manner that it enhances and fits neatly into the overall story. My overall rating would be an 8/10. Finally I would definitely recommend a Buy or Rent. In closing I would like to add that close attention must be paid throughout as it is very easy to miss out on critical parts/scenes which are essential to understanding what is going on or what actually occurred. The reason for the surprise ending is that it was so believable and unexpected that it kind of sneaks up on you and then lets you down gently and satisfied.

Surprisingly bad acting
tom_jerico7 September 2006
I was amazed out the poor acting on the parts of Weber and O'Grady. It made the dialogue sound worse than it probably was. I hope to God this was a TV movie, or maybe a straight-to-video. Some of the stuff on SciFi channel seems better rehearsed and executed. It is clearly low budget, but that can be a good thing. Not in this case, though. They should have forked out some dough for some better leading actors. Or maybe they should have shot more than one take each scene. It seemed like the actors learned their lines ahead of each scene and then just shot the scene without rehearsing, kind of a walk-through. Oh well. Guess some people like it.
