Not Worth a Mela!
rajivgill24 August 2001
You'd think that with hits like Raja Hindustani and Lootere in his bag, Dharmesh Dharshan would have a good entertainer in Mela. Not! Mela is really Sholay revisited. Sad to say, it doesn't even come close to Sholay.

So we have Twinkle Khanna, the village belle. Her brother (Ayub Khan) and best friend (Omkar Kapoor) are killed by the evil Gujjar (Tinnu Verma). She swears revenge against the latter. A series of events land her together with Kishen (Aamir Khan) and Shankar (Faisal Khan), whose help she enlists in her fight against Gujjar.

Twinkle truly brings to life the phrase damsel in distress to life! If she's not getting raped, she's plunging down waterfalls and being chased around by Gujjar's men. How she manages to find time to sing God-awful songs is beyond me. She's a truly drastic change from Darshan's usual heroines of substance. And having someone dub over her lines is the worst idea ever. Instead od sounding authentic, it sounds TERRIBLE, like she's overacting! Faisal Khan is a good looker, but it's hard to tell if he can act well. His role is pretty much like his previous one in Madhosh - the silent, stoic type. Aamir, as usual, is in his element as the playful Kishen. If not for him, this film would be lousier than it already is.

None of the songs are worth mentioning. The only one's that pseudo-decent is Dhadkan Mein Tum and that too, is a rip-off the background music of Ramesh Sippy's Andaz. Is Anu Malik THAT desperate?? Twinkle's outfits are awful, by the way! I may be a diehard fan of Aamir Khan, but there's no denying that Mela isn't worth celebrating.

Mela is a Hindi action masala film directed by Dharmesh Darshan. This is most popular movie. The characters were very genuine. It stars Aamir Khan, his real-life brother Faisal Khan and Twinkle. The starting part of the film was wonderful. After this the main part of film is starts. theme of the story was near about creativity. Theme music was very nice. Plot of the movie was amazing. Songs was good. Title song 'mela dilon ka' was very famous song. The music was composed by four composers with Anu Malik, Rajesh Roshan, and Lesle Lewis composing the songs and Surinder Sodhi composing the film score.End of the film was so well.finally i rated this movie with 3 stars.

SHOLAY gone wrong
silvan-desouza28 October 2009
Aamir is very choosy of his films but sometimes he too has done mistakes Dharmesh Darshan's MELA was one of his mistakes which also starred him with his brother Faizal Khan

The film is a remake of THE SEVEN SAMURAI and also CARAVAN but the film also suffers from the SHOLAY hangover

The characters of Aamir- Faizal and the villain Tinnu Anand(his name in the film being Gujjar) suffer from SHOLAY hang over

The film however is boring and the comedy between Aamir- Faizal is irritating and too loud and the pee joke copied from DUMB AND DUMBER and earlier shown in HERO HINDUSTANI(98) is badly handled

The villain's track too is clichéd and so is the entire bhasti set up plus the misunderstanding between Aamir and Twinkle and the entire climax

The climax is stretched endlessly

Direction by Dharmesh Darshan is weak, Music is okay, DHADKAN MAIN TUM is the best

Amongst actors Aamir tries hard to play a Dharam type role of SHOLAY but is too loud here though he does well in many scenes He isn't at his best Faizal Khan given the serious role is too stiff mostly but okay in some portions Tinnu Anand is very good as Gujjar Twinkle Khanna however is painful, her dubbing by someone else is too bad and shreiky and that worsens her act This role was offered to Karisma but Dharmesh felt that Twinkle will suit it better and that was a bad part though even Karisma would be intolerable with her crying Amongst rest Johny irritates, Tiku Talsania and the rest gang of Raja Hindustani(Navneet Nishan.etc) are boring Ayub Khan dies soon thankfully

Really awful!
ParagDesh8 January 2014
Acting (including Aamir Khan) is either bad or loud or both. The story is not very gripping. Twinkle Khanna sealed her fate as a failed actor with this movie. She has an amazing complexion. But the rest is plain bad. Despite having superstar parents, she does not have any talent as actor. Faizal Khan is boring. Just showing off muscles does not amount to acting. The villains are unreal and ugly. Blatantly plagiarizing the scene from Dumb and Dumber was done badly (I never thought this was possible!). The mela title song is tooooooo long and repetitive. I wonder what was the director thinking?

The whole movie is a waste of time. Not worth watching.

A crime against humanity .....

Warning: Spoilers
Yes! I wonder whether there was some sort of conspiracy among Bollywood filmmakers of the 90s and early 2000s to propagate family values mixed with sleaze. Regressive would be too soft a word for a film like Mela. The film makes you ill what with the brother-sister love song right at the film's beginning.

I doubt whether Indian audiences have changed because TV serials more regressive than Mela are still aired on Indian TV channels across all languages. Though I am glad Dharmesh Darshan's career has ended. Robin Bhatt who wrote the screenplay is still a busy man.

Aamir Khan hams it up. Twinkle Khanna simply cannot act. Faisal Khan was unremarkable at best. The cheesy songs were awful.

This movie should have never been made. The story, the songs, the acting...everything is over the top and cringe.

Not so bad, really.

Gee whiz! So many people I've spoken with are so hard on this movie! I saw this movie and really enjoyed it. Of course, Aamir Khan was great and he did carry a lot of the movie, but every movie I've seen with him he tends to outshine everyone else.

Am I so alone? Was there ANYONE else out there that enjoyed this film? I really thought Faisal was a good fit for the character he played. Clue me in - why is everyone so harsh on this film? Is it because they can't see past Sholay?

I would like to see more movies in this style; of course, there are so many Bollywood movies I might die before I am about to see 1/5 of them, but I always remember to turn off my brain and try to see the film as the directors meant it to be seen; and not to make comparisons. If we tried to compare every actor to Aamir, they'd all be found wanting.

All the Best to everyone; and chin up, Faisal! Someone out here thinks you are a success at what you do. I loved Shankar.

Don't listen to any of the crap about this movie. It's much better than the overrated movies of its era e.g Dil to Pagal hai etc.... I have watched it a few times myself. A full entertainer....

Songs are the souls of the film...
shaikhirshad-4122314 January 2024
Mela is well directed by Dharmesh Darshan and it is definitely a classic of 2000 as compared to songs of this movie.

All songs are great specially the title song totally do justice to the film and it is very impactful whenever the situation arises.

Don't know why it was a flop at the box office or why people hate this film because it is well directed as compare to other films that were released in 2000.

Performance of all actors are good none of them disappoint specially TWINKLE KHANNA yes her acting sometime disappoint in some scenes but the way she has maintain her personality and her physic in this film is just great to watch. And whoever her costume designer is there in this film is a total lover of her navel because not a single scene is there in which she hasn't shown her navel in the film.

Aamir & Faisal act brilliantly good specially the Villain is the soul of this film truly brilliant acting by him.

Music, Screenplay, Cinematography all are good and engaging so definitely you can watch if you love 2000 film's taste in Bollywood style....

Average Bollywood film
merisoch4 October 2020
This film is not too great but it doesn't deserve such a low rating. I thought it would have 6-7 stars like an average film. As it is a typical village drama with a dacoit theme, there are no inspirational messages or big lessons. However, it will keep you entertained.

Twinkle Khanna was a decent actress, not as good as Aamir or Faisal but not bad either. Some of her dialogues reminded me of the bahu's of TV soaps. It's just the typical acting of a Bollywood damsel-in-distress of that era.

The film had lots of colorful songs and Johnny Lever comedy scenes which were entertaining.

Some of the dramatic and/or violent scenes were actually so far-fetched and cliché that they made me laugh, instead of taking it seriously. But that wasn't a big deal.

On YouTube it is one of the top 5 Hindi movies, having 103 million views (and counting). That means it is liked by the general population.

First Song...Long Shot. Actors movie.Everything else is Bad.
rupanisp4 December 2002
All three Actors---- Beautiful Twinkle Khanna, Faisal Khan, and Aamir Khan have worked very well in very bad movie.

It is Twinkle Khanna's movie.

Bad Screenplay. Bad Direction. Everything is very bad.

First Song Mela is very good.

Long shot makes no impression at all.

There is a Hollywood movie on Boxing... where it makes sense.

Movie Gandhi also has many long shots.

Thanks and Regards.
