Beats Log Rolling Any day...
Skyscrapers is quite a daring little film considering the era in which it was made. Before watching this I watched a 15-minute film about log rolling in Maine (sad, I know) which, as I said in my summary for that film, was exciting as watching logs rolling down a river. Both films were made in the same year by the same company, and yet while one is as dull as a film can be the other was probably one of the most exciting spectacles committed to film up to that date. That's not to say this is a particularly good film: it's not - it's a badly acted film that is lifted by some terrific panoramic shots filmed from the top of a semi-built skyscraper. The story, such as it is, only kicks in after we've spent five minutes watching construction workers going about their business as if they are standing only inches above the earth rather than hundreds of feet. Watching it, you can't help wondering whether this was where Harold Lloyd got the idea for his hair-raising antics.
One workman, identified by the intertitles - which were also a recent innovation when this film was made - as 'Dago Tony' picks a fight with another worker for no particular reason and, when he is fired by the foreman, gets his revenge by framing the foreman for robbery. Of course everything works out OK in the end. Definitely worth a watch if you've got a spare ten minutes
