- Michael, good looking and 25, is treated like a teenager by his Mother, who fumes over him at every turn, tells him not to come home late at night, etc.
One evening Michael decides to break loose from her apron strings and goes bar-hopping in Greenwich Village. He picks up Liz, a beautiful but promiscuous girl and winds up in bed with her in the apartment of Liz's friend Maxine. Maxine is a lesbian who everyone calls Max. She adores Liz, but realizes Liz is only interested in men. When Liz realizes Mike believes this to be her "first" affair, she lets him think so and they make another date.
Liz works for a dress house and entertaining buyers is part of the job. If they expect her to go all the way she does because she is good-hearted if not virtuous and is fond of Sam, her middle-aged boss. Business is bad even with her "after-hours" assistance and Sam asks her to go see Mr. Contronia to ask for financial assistance. When she meets him she realizes Mr. Contronia is a gangster and he revolts her. He makes advances and when she refuses he tries to rape her. There is a wild fight and somehow she manages to escape.
Liz and Michael have another date and wind up again in one another's arms at Maxine's apartment. Mr. Contronia sends some of his gang after Liz at the bar where she usually hangs out. When they find Maxine and she refuses to tell them anything they gang up on her, beat her to a pulp and leave her to die.
When Liz learns about this, she feels it is her fault and she has guilt feelings about her way of life. She confesses to Michael that she has practically been a prostitute and tells him to look for the "nice" girl he deserves. He insists he doesn't care about her past, but she runs out into the street and under the wheels of a car that is speeding by.
