Sweet family film about loss and love
Pheebshirl20 November 2005
Warning: Spoilers
I bought this film for 97p in Tescos. It is a sweet tale of an old man who lives with his family after suffering a stroke. Feeling that he is a nuisance he leaves the family and sets out on a journey to visit his wife's grave. On his journey the old man meets a range of people and touches their lives, these include a young college student, some bank robbers, a gay couple and their drag queen friend. In pursuit of Ernie is his worried daughter (Mary Mara) and his granddaughter Emily(Danielle Harris) who shares both her grandmothers name and looks. This film is a very nice heart warming tale. It is obviously either very low budget or a TV movie but is very enjoyable. The acting is fairly decent. Not excellent but a nice film nonetheless.

Quirky feel-good entertainment

Warning: Spoilers
It's been decades since I last saw Alan Young; from "The Time Machine" and of course, Wilbur in "Mr Ed". I hope I'm as fit and healthy as he looks at 85 in this made for TV movie from 2004.

This can probably be described as a "road movie" or perhaps "coming of age" movie. If we live long enough, many of us will find ourselves in a similar situation to Ernie, who's one wish in life is to be reunited with his beloved Emily. So he sets off for her grave site, meeting people and changing lives for the better on the way.

It's been done before, of course. I thought the script was quirky and more in the European style. Instead of the tired old clichés, Ernie would often utter something completely unexpected.

I rate this a 9 for entertainment value. It's done on a shoestring budget but who cares? If a movie leaves you feeling better than when the opening credits rolled, it's done its job well. Recommended for the young at heart, but not the young and brain dead!

Don't waste your time

Warning: Spoilers
Simply put, this movie was awful. It was nice to see Alan Young again having not seen him since his Mr. Ed days, but the acting throughout was dreadful. The young couple who rob convenience stores should have used the money they stole to enrol in acting school. Their so-called acting has to be seen to be believed. Also, I doubt a very old man like the grandfather character would have been so accepting of homosexual behaviour, most old people brought up in a different era, are not accepting at all. I almost choked when Ernie says to the gay guy, "your eyes dance when you talk about Lance". The fact that this line rhymed, made it even worse. His daughter's husband's lines were totally unbelievable and he said them like he was reading from the script. Most of the dialogue didn't ring true, the acting was abysmal so my advice - don't waste your time or money on this dud.
