Another "Russian" movie made in France .There were lots of them in the precedent decade where this one actually belongs too.Based on a Tolstoy novel, thanks to Marcel Herrand as the czar (his aristocratic look is perfect)and Louis Salou ,two actors who were part of the cast of the contemporary legendary "Enfants Du Paradis" ,it's above average .

Prince Stephane had a gorgeous fiancée ,Marie Korotkova ,but alas ,the czar took advantage of her (in fact she wanted to help a member of her family and the monarch probably thought he had to be paid for it)and at the time, there was no joking over virginity. The miserable prince became a starets (ermit),but fortunately, not a forerunner of Rasputin!A true saint,a healer who worked miracles all over the place where he lived after divesting himself of all his possessions .He resisted temptation but the unfortunate ex-fiancée was dying of love .Very sad ending.
