Not bad considering the era
planktonrules3 July 2006
Warning: Spoilers
Okay, this film isn't the greatest cartoon ever made--I'll admit that. But, considering when it was made, it isn't bad at all. Cartoons were only in their infancy--with very few having been made so far and with rather crude drawings and no sound. However, compared to its contemporaries (such as Krazy Kat), the animation and especially the backgrounds are good.

The other review posted was pretty accurate in that the cartoon isn't especially memorable but that the cat in the dough sequence was the best. But what can you expect from 1918? The plot is simple. The Captain gets an insurance policy on himself and his wife is pleased--so pleased she will make him a mushroom pie (who would want that?). The kids shove some toads in it and the Captain mistakenly thinks his wife is trying to kill him. That's really about it.

predictable and occasionally funny pointlessness
Mary-189 April 2005
I don't know why I dislike the Katzenjammer kids so much, but I just don't find them appealing. They play mild pranks, but the only result is the almost-a-thrill of seeing the big fat dad scratch his head in puzzlement and then open his mouth and eyes really wide. That's not much of a pay off. While I'll sound like I have the shortest attention span in the world, even at a mere 7 minutes, I thought this cartoon was much too long. Very little actually happens, and it seems that several times footage was repeated. The only sequence that I found amusing was when the mom is baffled that her ball of dough has come to life (it's actually the much-abused kitty covered in dough!).

Policy and Pie is an interesting Katzenjammer Kids cartoon from silent era

Warning: Spoilers
Let me mention some gags that haven't been discussed yet: After the Captain finds the black cat under his hat on the floor after the hat moved, he hits the cat with a brush at the exact time Mama's flour in her pie hits her and makes her white! Like the others here, I loved it when the cat rose from the dough and-staying white-went to the saucer of milk that conveniently happened to be there and drank it as if it was his all along. I also loved the frog in the pond balancing the mushroom on his webbed foot impressing the other frogs in his pond. The only real problem here is that Hans and Franz-the Katzenjammer kids-don't have any contact with the Captain or Mama til the end and that it ends before they run from what I'm sure would be another comeuppance from the Captain. So to anyone who's curious about silent cartoons, I'd recommended Policy and Pie.

Policy and Pie (1918)

** 1/2 (out of 4)

A man takes out an insurance policy on himself so his wife, out of pure joy, decides to bake him a pie. While that is going on the man plays with his cat and a couple kids play outside. Plot wise there's really not too much here. If you're looking for some great laughs then you're going to be disappointed because there's really none here. There's no suspense, drama or action either. What makes this film entertaining is the animation itself, which is extremely good for 1918. One wishes that the story would have been a little better but the main reason people are going to watch this is for the animation and that makes it worth sitting through.
