Disappointing.
daggersineyes25 August 2013
I thought this was going to be an OK movie but it didn't live up to it's early promise (or it's tag lines) and ended up being a very boring movie.

It's got one or two OK chase scenes & a bit of drama but there's not much else going on. The lead actor is a large part of the problem (he's barely there, maybe he was on tranqulisers or something to help him cope with this abysmal script) and the musical score is another problem. If you're trying to create an edgy thriller why on earth would you use music that would be more suitable for some mediocre schmaltzy sugary Hallmark tragic romance flick. That horrible "angelic choir" music completely destroyed any atmosphere this thinly drawn tale might have dredged up. But even with decent sound I don't think this would have been a whole lot better.

There's no mystery, no suspense and no thrills. The actor playing Johnathon did an OK job with what he had, which wasn't a lot. He was convincing at least. The PI was a stereotype. And there was some weird touchy feely stuff between the main dude and the PI that didn't really belong.

After the first interesting 20 mins the pacing drops to an excruciatingly slow amble and becomes much more of a drama than a thriller. I am not a big fan of drama - unless it's EXCEPTIONAL and deals with important stuff - which this isn't and doesn't'.

The ending just drags on forever with no particular purpose. In fact, it felt like they filmed half a dozen alternative "endings" but the director couldn't decide which one to use so he threw them all in. The final final ending was particularly boring and nonsensical. I also knew "whodunnit" pretty early on. There was no surprises for me. The only bright spot was the kid who played Dillon.

BUT I have given it 4 points because it's actually better than a lot of the mediocre stuff around - and that's not really saying much. I think it had an interesting story even if it wasn't portrayed well. I'd love to have seen what a more innovative & confident director with some decent actors could have made of it.

I can't say this is a great movie, not even sure it qualifies as "good" but it has it's OK points and it isn't a disaster. I didn't even fast forward any of it so that shows it at least held my interest (except maybe the end(s) when I started shuffling papers etc while it tried to find a point to finish on).

I DO think it's an excellent choice for say, a guy who wants a night in watching movies with his girlfriend (or vice versa) and can't work out whether to get a chick flick or a boys action/adventure/thriller movie. This will cover both of you, albeit in a not entirely satisfactory way. But if she likes sob-movies she'll probably like it. You can just watch the chase scenes and even score brownie points for offering to make drinks during the slow bits. :D (PS But not if she's a chick like me. In which case you'd be better off renting Suspiria or Ils)!!)

Not for serious fans of the genre or movie buffs but OK for a slow night/rainy afternoon popcorn fodder.

Strong movie with some plot holes...
LilsZoo21 October 2003
This movie is about obsession, salvation and finally redemption. A loving but absent husband,(Luke Wilson) is told by his wife that she is having and affair, leaves to think things out only to return and discover his wife is dead. He is now the main suspect and needs to find the real killer. In his journey of exploration, hires the private dick, Dick, excellently portrayed by the awesome Dennis Farina. The lover engages the husband in an intricate cat and mouse game that ultimately comes to a shocking discovery. But mostly this film is about normal people when put under pressure do just about anything and think it is reasonable at the time. What makes this one different is that when all is said and done one man makes a choice that will change his life forever.

A so-so whodunit
blackisbeauty21 July 2005
As far as such "psychological" whodunits go, this one had an OK story-line based on a realistic premise. Unfortunately, the acting was poor, and here I am particularly referring to Luke Wilson in the main role of Preston. He was never really convincing as the "cheated husband" out to avenge both his wife's murder AND the fact that he was cheated in the first place. He tried too hard, as I think someone else also pointed out in a previous comment. Dennis Farina was fair enough in his role as the private Dick (though clearly stereotyped), and overall I liked the way Norman Reedus played the Jonathan character (despite cozing up with somebody else's wife, he turned out to be not exactly a 100 per cent nasty person but actually an interesting character study in himself). Although having said that, there were a couple of things he did over the top ... like setting himself on fire, and walking around with the crucial video-tape in his pocket all along(!)

Straight-forward; candid movie
monkey_slayer2 May 2003
Pick this movie up for its content, plot, and up and coming stars. Pretend this movie is "Fugitive" for people who think Harrison Ford is, justifiably so, too old.

Luke Wilson portrays the angst-ridden, quasi-loser, nice-guy-finishes-second last in a way only he can. He is the victim of a boring, cheating wife, a slice d' la ass in Mili Avital, who detaches from the marriage for Norman Reedus, the Prada model turned unwashed actor. Norman really takes the movie cinematography to a new level with his brilliant and piercing blue eyes - boring down on real or imagined foes with great alacrity and recompence.

The man for whom Oscar's are no stranger, a thespian in every sense of the word, none other than Dennis Farina - the shrewd and wise Miami cop turned private eye in Seattle. Dennis may have been strong in Saving Private Ryan and Get Shorty, but dominates this movie with his composure and sleuth skills.

Even the extras are true to life. During one particular scene when the chase begins, Wilson is seen eating in a low end diner. Stereotypically, the cook looks like a bitter old cook, the Seattle locals look grungy and flannel-clad, and the policeman looks like an FBI agent.

Overall, a strong recommendation for a Friday night at home. You won't be dissapointed with the chase, plot, and eventual outcome.

bad silly movie
gustheaffen5 June 2017
Warning: Spoilers
This was so slow and ridiculous. The story was not believable at all. A man's wife has an affair with an unbalanced low life. This just wasn't believable. None of these characters acted within any realm of reasonableness. They all take the law into their own hands and run around doing ridiculous things to each other. I can't believe some of the good reviews. Even the acting was poor. This really wasn't a thriller or any kind of real mystery worth knowing the little twist that caused everyone to just let it go as a misunderstanding. Don't waste 90 minutes on this.

Melancholy thriller
NateWatchesCoolMovies10 March 2016
Preston Tylk, more commonly known on DVD as 'Bad Seed', is a moody, depressing little thriller that opens with a situation so bleak that we wonder where can we go from there. It concerns Preston (Luke Wilson) a mild mannered dude who comes home from work one day to find his wife (Milli Avital) murdered. He runs off in despair, and soon finds that shady, volatile Jonathan (Norman Reedus), is after him under the impression that he killed his own wife. Jonathan had a vague affair with her, leading to an obsession, and now can't let it go, funnelling his loss and sadness into a nasty, violent vendetta against Preston. Preston's only hope rests with estranged private detective Dick Miller (Dennis Farina) who agrees to go on the run with him and provide assistance. It's a low key, empty tale that heavily gives off the vibe that it's headed for a grim dead end, at least for some characters. There's a sense of hope in the chemistry between Wilson and Farina, the latter proving to be the sole individual in the piece who provides pathos and emotional warmth. Wilson is damaged, detached, and Reedus is cold, unhinged and unpredictable. They both play their roles well, especially Reedus whose hollowness can be felt like a tangible force when he's on screen. This isn't happy stuff though, nor is it fiery and fast paced. It's a melancholy little study of the confusion that death leaves behind, and the elliptical futility of revenge.

Lots of redundancy kills an OK idea
guyb15 October 2003
This movie has some interesting characters and started off pretty tense. But eventually, I got worn out by the endless stupid chase scenes on foot through (maybe the same) forests. I chase you; then you chase me; then we chase him; etc. The same for the "grab the gun from the other guy." Endless.

Bad Seed, Bad Movie *1/2
edwagreen25 February 2006
Warning: Spoilers
You need a score card to figure out what's going on with "Bad Seed."

A woman confesses to her husband that she has been having an affair. Just then the other guy calls. Her husband storms out of the house and returns to find her dead. After the funeral, he finds a letter with the guy's address. He goes there and he thinks he has killed the guy only to find out that he murdered his retarded brother instead. Speaking of retarded!

The movie dissolves into a one big chase thing. Our "hero" finds detective played by Denis Farina.

Wait, if that's not enough the retarded guy who was killed actually killed the girl after all.

We've got a fire by suicide to deal with. Complex! More mishuga to me.

Bad Seed = Bad Movie
scott-2240219 April 2021
It's April 2021, and for some reason Prime recommended this "movie" for me, and seeing that Like Wilson was in it, I gave it a chance. It turns out that it could've been the worst waste of my time since being born 48 years ago. It had everything horrible: horrible plot, horrible dialogue, horrible acting, and horrible - well - everything. I can't believe this movie isn't referenced when someone brings up The Room.

Somber thriller, quiet desperation that pays off nicely
hippiedj30 May 2002
I picked up this film on DVD titled as Bad Seed, because I was in the mood for a mystery and the fact that Luke Wilson and Dennis Farina starred in it.

At first, I found things to be a bit standard as far as "thrillers" go, almost on the level of a basic TV movie. But something really starts to draw the viewer in and by watching through to the end, there is really a nice payoff.

Don't try to compare this to Hitchcock, just sit back and let the story unfold. When Preston (Luke Wilson) hears his wife confess to having an affair, he storms out to a cafe and when he comes back home he finds her dead. By trying to confront her lover Jonathan (Norman Reedus), things get way out of control, even hiring a private detective (Dennis Farina) proves to make a messy situation even worse. It's easy to say these guys do a LOT of stupid, stupid things (like busting up a motel room) and one would think that in reality no one would make such bad decisions, but I took into consideration that people really act in the strangest ways when confronted with a situation that's extraordinary and no time to really think things through. Preston has his flaws, but he's really an okay guy, as is Jonathan. By appreciating the quiet desperation and increasing tension between them, along with the effective rainy locations in Tacoma and Seattle, the film is somber yet tense.

I actually love grey, rainy landscapes -- to me they're calming instead of gloomy. But considering the sadness in Preston's life and both he and Jonathan (as well as the detective) knowing that no matter what they do it's going to end rather messy, the wet greys of the sky and deep greens of the Northwest accent the film in a very melancholic way. The score is beautiful in many scenes, and rather grand for a film of this type made today (particularly one with such a low budget). Actually, the dramatic cues seemed a bit too grand in places, but it reminded me of how mysteries and thrillers back in the 1970s used to have full orchestral scores instead of everything being done on an electronic keyboard. Some very nice piano work, wish I had a soundtrack recording of it.

I know that some would just get fed up with these characters' behavior and think that the film just going to have a typical knock-down, drag-out fight to end it all, but I for one was pleasantly surprised to see the way the story took a turn and threw in a twist here and there. Even the ending seemed just right (even if it gives you a Shawshank Redemption deja vu moment). I felt a little sad yet satisfied by the turn of events, as is how I truly think the ending is supposed to affect you. After listening to the audio commentary on the DVD, you may also appreciate more what writer/director Jon Bokenkamp was trying to accomplish.

Not a perfect film, but by no means a misfire. I found Preston Tylk/Bad Seed to be a nice diversion from the common Hollywood "thriller" and would recommend it for those not wanting grandiose style and wanting a dramatic tale, something just right to watch with some snacks on a night at home, relaxing.

A Few Moments Of Hitchcock
rasfl28 April 2022
Others have suggested that the viewer not compare the direction of this movie to Alfred Hitchcock. However, the director selectively inserts H. Into this film in a very odd fashion. Strains of Bernard Hermann (Scottie/Vertigo) occasionally rise up. Our hero is occasionally presented as if he were a Hitchcock character, struggling with internal demons. As a result, I found myself imagining what the movie could have been if it had openly embraced Hitchcock.

Warning: Spoilers
Not too bad, not too good, this movie is decent. With the exception of Luke Wilson the acting was very good. Wilson just tries too hard to be a loser. It should be more natural. Just watch old video tapes of Jon Lovitz. The script was decent but there was not enough mystery involved, and at certain occaisons the movie goes over the top. For example, the scene where Norman Reedus lights himself on fire. Was that really necessary? I mean he had a gun with him, why not just blow your brains out? I guess they had some extra budget leftover. If you like mysteries and Wilson or Reedus see this flick.

Boring Mess
divinechannel25 April 2021
A three because I am truly a fan of all the mains. However, this movie was a boring mess. It was just way too much for my liking. It was all over the place and felt like it was going everywhere and nowhere at the same time. Huge sigh of relief after having suffered through, as my favorite part was the ending.

It was raining for half of the movie They messed up the Cemetery scene, EVERYONE had an umbrella over thier heads but the widower!

Any reputable funeral home would have made SURE the immediate family was covered! All I can say, in closing, is that even Stevie Wonder could SEE what a Hot Mess this movie was!!

I don't want to give anything away.
ccappitelli21 February 2006
I really liked the movie. It keep u guessing and its a job thriller. who ever says that it isn't good needs to reconsider their ability to rank movies. I would give it two thumbs up. Plus Norman Reedus is a totally amazing actor and he really brings his character to the screen. It doesn't hurt that he's totally gorgeous either. Luke Wilson also does a very good job because he has a serious roll and he does an amazing job. The movie will have you asking yourself what is going to happen next because it takes so many twists and turn. when i saw this movie at first I was going to ignore it but as I was watching it I found that I could not turn away from it because it just has this effect on you where you don't want to blink for fear of missing a minute of the story.

A Little Bit Odd
AnnaBeth19 June 2002
I am not sure why Luke Wilson chose to star in this film. He does an okay job. He looks tormented at the required points and hurt at others. As for Norman Reedus he plays "creepy" well and I found it nice to see him in such a part even though it is similar to his character in the movie Gossip. I think it's better to see another Wilson film than this one. Try Bottle Rocket or Home Fries. Overall, this movie was just okay. If anything see it for some nice Dennis Farrina moments.

Pretty Sweet Thriller
staisil228 June 2003
This thriller about Preston Tylk, (Wilson) and a detective in search of the real truth of the man's wife's murder, and of the stalker (Reedus), who in turn wants to find out the real truth of his brother's death, and to confront the man, Preston, and get payback. Bad Seed may not be such a great title for this movie, but this thriller sure has great expectations, as well as Wilson and Reedus as the "cat and mouse". 8 out of 10.

Interesting movie
showbizdeluxe27 July 2002
Somewhat interesting movie, obviously independent, that strives for edgy. One of those films that isn't the greatest, but you still can't turn the channel. Has a few unknown faces that people should try in a few different roles. If some of the unknowns, like the student that gets his car stolen by the "special police" (Scott Nath), were to be tried in something else, they might shine. Not horrible.

Warning: Spoilers
You ever watch one of those movies where it starts good but just gets worse and worse as it goes along? I'd consider "Bad Seed" to be one of those movies.

I was kind of into it at the beginning, but it just kept going downhill. Luke Wilson's character kept making stupid decisions and his deceased wife's lover was impossibly clever.

I wish I could say it was good, but I can't. Perhaps if the ending had been better, I could've at least considered it decent but in good conscience I can't.

Unfortunately, I'd have to say skip this one. It's just not that great. There are far better movies in this same genre to check out.

He works in Mysterious Ways
gpeltz13 April 2015
Warning: Spoilers
I had remembered a 1956 movie called, "Bad Seed" and it was about a spooky little girl. Then there was "Demon Seed" 1977 about a killer computer. Both claim legitimacy to rest in the category "Horror Film" This movie "Bad Seed" (2000) Written and Directed by Jon BokenKamp does not fit in the conventional concept of Horror Film, (As the You Tube movie category under which I found it, claimed) No scary monster stalking sorority girls. No Undead, supernatural, or demonic subterfuge here. What we get is something much more interesting. Horror perhaps, but along the line of "A Simple Plan"(1998) Warning Spoiler Alert. I am going to discuss the movie.

The style of the film plays for the first reel as a smart homage to the Coen brothers. The second reel gives us a cat and mouse series of events, This part of the movie seemed overplayed, as if to pacify those longing for police sirens. The movie concludes with a revelation, and a redemption. and a fail.

The force of the Director is strong with this one.He opens with a stylish flourish, that pulls one right in. a basic breakup scenario, In this instance Preston, played by Luke Wilson, just found out that his wife, Emily played by Mili Avital was having an affair. He leaves the apartment to think things over, but when he returns, he finds her dead. Preston is convinced that Emily's other lover, Jonathan Reedus committed the murder. and In an act of vigilante "justice" kill's Jonathan. He then hides the body in the woods. In a daft plot twist, we discover He killed the wrong guy, he murdered Jonathans brother. There is another major player who enters the plot, a Private Gumshoe named Dick. played by Dennis Farina. He is Hired by Preston who is now on the run from the furious Jonathan who is out to kill him, He us is on the lam as well from the police who think he killed his wife.

Jonathan holds a trump card, A video tape from a security monitor, that recorded his brothers murder. Preston spends the next third of the movie trying to locate that incriminating tape. Just at the point where the situation starts straining credibility, The films direction again changes, Now we get the full emotional payoff. Perhaps a tad bit too thick, but still managing to pack a good wallop.

The Apocalyptic score was written by Kurt Kuenne and the production design by Chris Eguia reflects a care for the period; Well done cheesy hotel rooms, VCR players, and rotary dial phones, The Editing by Ann Trulove is crisp and propels the action seamlessly.

On the other side of the coin, I thought the movie a tad heavy in the sentiment department, It verges on the "sappy" Jonathan and Preston share a common bond, that oddly draws them together, they both loved Emily. So the logical question that arises, but goes unsaid, is, Why would Jonathan kill Emily. (A-Hah!) Might I add that the demise of one of the characters was redundant, The Judicial conclusion was also glossed over, we never heard the sentence, sadly the movie ends with a "Redemption in the rain" replay. I'll not fault the movie for this, it was a good ride while it lasted. Eight out of Ten, "He works in mysterious ways" Stars.

Lousy d-grade cable movie disguised as an edgy thriller
mikekrumboltz2 March 2001
I saw "Preston Tylk" at the San Jose Film Festival and was actually excited to see it. The program billed it as a neo-noir thriller and described its interesting premise. A guy goes out for coffee, comes back and his wife is dead. After that, things get weird. Unfortunately, the premise doesn't hold the film together. The acting is poor, the characters are reaching (striving, in fact) to be more than cliches, and the story is boring and played out. "Preston Tylk" proves a sad fact that just because a film is independent doesn't mean it has something interesting or new to say. Skip it.

Another Bad Film Grad Movie
David515 August 2001
Another movie that makes you nostalgic for the studio system. In a former era Mr. Bokencamp would have been assigned a film like this, struggled to put his stamp on it and come away with, if not a great film, at least a journeyman's knowledge of how a film works. So called independent films like this one, and there seem to be plenty of them, have no particular vision, say nothing that couldn't have been said by a studio hack and strive awkwardly to transcend their genres, revealing only the callowness of their creators. To be sure, Mr. Bokencamp is thwarted by his lead who was not up to the demands of this role but appealing as his relationship with the detective might have been had Mr. Wilson been capable of bringing it off, it really has no place in film noir anyway. If you soft boil this genre it turns to mush.

Bad Seed
bookworms411 March 2006
Concerning the movie BAD SEED with Luke Wilson: It was a 6 out of ten on the one to ten scale. I could be wrong, as my attention might have strayed a bit on occasion, but I thought PRESTON destroyed a vcr and TV in the motel room and then LATER was seen viewing a MOVIE on the same TV and vcr? Maybe it was a different motel? And also: the caller ID the detective travelled with: I thought you could only get an ID if the phone itself had the PAID for service on it? I don't know any hotel that gives free caller ID.

Not to mention: where did the crazed stalker find the time during his busy workday from the bakery to track Preston's every move? I wish I had a job like the people in all the LIFETIME movies. They call off when they want, don't show up when needed, and rarely lose their jobs.
