In Your House: Wrestlemania
bh_tafe318 July 2009
Warning: Spoilers
Wrestlemania 13 was a bit of a mess heading in. WWE Champion Shawn Michaels had been injured in February and forced to forfeit the title only days after winning it from Sycho Sid at the Royal Rumble. Bret Hart had then won a four man battle royal, last eliminating the Undertaker, to win the vacant title at In Your House 13: The Final Four in February. One day later he lost that title to Sycho Sid after Steve Austin knocked Hart out. The Undertaker was then installed as No.1 contender as he'd been the last man eliminated in the Battle Royal, while Hart would get his chance for revenge on Austin in a submission match. There was another chance for Hart though, six days before the event as he faced Sid for the WWE Title in a steel cage match. If hart won, he would defend the title in a submission match against Stone Cold, while if Sid won, he would face the Undertaker (who he'd already meant on RAW several times) for the title. Austin tried to aid Hart, Undertaker tried to aid Sid, and Sid won.

And so, after a ridiculously complicated build up in which the title had changed hands three times in two weeks and had been defended 5 times in a month, Wrestlemania 13, an unprecedented, and given the build unsurprising, financial disaster for the WWE. Though it wasn't all that bad a show and did include, IMO, the greatest match ever to happen in the WWE.

The night started off with a fourway elimination tag team match with the winner to be named No.1 contender for the WWE Tag Team Championship. The Headbangers (Thrasher and Mosh) won an overly long and not overly good match. Their opponents, in order of elimination, were The New Blackjacks (Bradshaw and Barry Windham:Windham was DQ'd for attacking the ref) Phil Lafon and Doug Furnas (Furnas was counted out), and The Godwinns (Phineas and Henry: Phineas was pinned after a senton cannonball from Thrasher).

The match saw Rocky Maivia (later known as The Rock) make his first ever Wrestlemania appearance defeating the Sultan (later Rikishi) to retain the Intercontinental Championship. Rocky not really a great worker at this stage, passable match.

Next saw the continuation of the rivalry between Hunter Hearst Helmsley and Goldust, with Helmsley getting the pin after his body guard Chyna, distracted Goldust by attacking his wife Marlena at ring side. The rivalry had been going on since the Royal Rumble. Ignore some of the myths, Triple H was going nowhere fast until he joined DX.

Next match was the best one of the show so far as Own Hart and British Bulldog put their WWE Tag Team Titles on the line against Mankind and Vader. What you'd expect with a lot of brawling, the good guys Owen and Bulldog were able to retain their belts despite cheating from the villains, their rule breaking coming to nothing following a double count out.

The next match was arguably the very best ever to happen in a WWE ring as Bret Hart kicked Steve Austin's ass all over the arena in a fantastic submission match. Hart turns heel inside the actual match, while Steve Austin was cemented as the hottest star in the company. The match was officiated by UFC star Ken Shamrock, who challenged Hart to a fight after he beat into an already unconscious Austin. Shamrock was not a bad wrestler, but never really reached great heights in the WWE through a two year run, eventually ending up back in the octagon.

Next up saw the returning Legion of Doom (Hawk and Animal) teaming up with Ahmed Johnson against the Nation of Domination (Farooq, Crush and Savio Vega) to get a victory in a junk match. LOD, who were a great tag team in the NWA and had a mildly successful run with the WWE in the early 1990s, were well past their prime by this point. Hawk passed away a few years later.

Brings us to our main event, which was six days in the making! Undertaker capitalised on interference from recently turned bad guy Bret Hart, to hit Sid with a tombstone and win the WWE Championship. This was not a very good match, but was hardly the train wreck some claimed, just a standard match with a muddled build.

So somehow Sycho Sid got himself on the list of people who've been in the Main Event match at multiple Wrestlemania matches (He had wrestled Hogan in a retirement match at WM8). Steve Austin had fully arrived as a megastar, Bret Hart had gone to the dark side, and the Chicago crowd had seen one of the greatest matches of all time. Not a great PPV, certainly lacking in atmosphere, but hardly worthy of some of the criticism it's received as being the worst Wrestlemania ever.

Injuries Hurt This Mania
eltacoman197830 December 2006
I was at this Wrestlemania live in Chicago. As most wrestling fans know this was set to be the long awaited rematch between Bret Hart & Shawn Michaels from the previous years Wrestlemania. Shawn pulled out of the match some time earlier claiming a "career ending" knee injury. This may have been some kind of "blessing in disguise" as in it's place we had Steve Austin taking the place of Michaels, and one of the greatest matches in Wrestlemania history (if not THE greatest)ensued in a Austin/Hart submission match, with UFC veteran Ken Shamrock as special guest referee.

What was most interesting about this match was the infamous "double turn" of both participants. Hart was the baby face,or good guy heading into this bout, with Austin as heel,or bad guy. By the end of this match the roles had been reversed which is something not easily done over the course of one match.

While Austin's popularity was on the rise prior to this match,it was this night that he really cemented himself as a big time, main event guy.

Aside from this match there wasn't a whole lot else going on here,at least nothing of note, other than The Undertaker winning his second WWF title from Sid Vicious, with some assistance from Bret Hart.

Definitely worth viewing strictly for the Austin/Hart match, which really is one of the greatest matches in this events history.

Second worst WrestleMania of all time
RepoManRules24 May 2003
Gee, where do I start? The only two good matches were the Chicago Street Fight and Bret/Austin. Everything else blew. Hell, The Free For All match was better then most of the card! The Rock/Sultan match was so boring that I would of rather had a root canal

NOT RECOMMENDED.

Hart v.s Austin
GODFATHERk51 July 2006
The submission match between Stone Cold "Steve Austin" and Bret The "Hit Man" Hart was the best match of Wrestlemania 13. It put the high standards of all Wrestlemania's forever. The match involved a special referree Ken Shamrock, who is a submission fighter. Wrestlemania 13 produced a "double turn" as Bret Hart turned "heel" and Stone Cold turned "face" in the same match. Bret Hart rendered Austin unconscious using the Sharpshooter, while Austin was a bloody mess. We now get the famous close up of Austin bleeding while trying to power out. Austin trys to get out, but Bret refuses and locks it back on. Shamrock asking Austin if he gives up, but recognizing that Austin does not respond and suddenly with loss of blood, passes out from the pain. The famous picture of Austin being put in the Sharpshooter and with a bloody face, will forever be remembered as one of the greatest moments in Wrestlemania History.

Maybe Not Quite As Bad As Its Rep, But Hart/Austin Surely Saves It
zkonedog3 March 2019
There seems to be some schools of thought in which WrestleMania 13 is the worst one the WWE ever produced. While I won't go quite that far, I will say that it is very "flat" all the way through and only saved by one iconic clash.

There is certainly some talent present at this WrestleMania, with characters such as Rocky Maivia (later "The Rock"), HHH (still in the "royalty" gig), Mankind, and Owen Hart. For the most part, though, none of the matches involving these individuals draw any excitement from viewers or fans. The card construction seems rather mathematical, in a sense, instead of excitement-based.

The finale, Psycho Sid vs. Undertaker, is a good example of this. The match itself isn't bad, but the pairing is odd and uninspired. One can tell from the opening bell (if not far before) that this combination is only present because they are both big men with big names thrown together. No heat behind the rivalry whatsoever.

The only thing that saves this card from being close to a complete disaster is the epic Bret Hart vs. Stone Cold Steve Austin submission match. Truly one of the greats in the history of WrestleManias. The legend of Austin continues to grow, while Hart really starts the heel turn that would ultimately spell his WWE end. This clash probably adds a full two stars to my ranking of WM 13 for how well-done and important it is to the grand scheme of things.

WM 13 will always be in sort of a weird place, sandwiched between two iconic WrestleManias until the end of time. It maybe isn't as bad as you remember it, but only because Hart/Austin really is "that good".

Worst Wrestlemania since 9
batman_81115 February 2003
When Wrestlemania 13 came along in 1997 the Wrestlemania magic just wasn't there. It was mostly filled up with mathes no one really cares about such As Fatu Vs Rocky, Goldust Vs Triple H and Sid Vs the Undertaker. Sid vs The Undertaker was the worst main event in Wrestlemania history. The match it self was slower then a game of chess. Also there was no build up to the match at all. The only good thing about this Wrestlemania was the Bret "The Hitman" Hart Vs Stone Cold Steve Austin. What really should of been the main event. Austin should of won the world title at the final four PPV and become a baby face right after that. And then Bret should of beat Austin for the World title at this PPV. But keep the match just like it was in this PPV with Bret turning heel and Austin turning face.

2 match card
reigunyu8 January 2004
This was a two match card. Fortunately one match changed the WWF which turned the promotion into the most sucessful period in wrestling at that time. Everything on the undercard barring the decent tag match between Hart/Smith vs Vader/Foley was so/so. The submission match between Hart-Austin is one of the greatest matches of all time. This was than followed by the street fight between NOD and LOD/Ahmed. The main event Sid Vs the Undertaker was alright, it wasn't the best and it shouldn't have been the main event. The main event should have been Austin & Hart, atleast check out Wrestlemania 13 for that submission match, you want be disappointed.

Lackluster show saved by a 5 Star Match
morantjavonte19 November 2020
Warning: Spoilers
WrestleMania 13 was the 13th annual WrestleMania taking place on March 23, 1997 at the at the Rosemont Horizon in the Chicago suburb of Rosemont Illinois. Attendence was at 18,197. This WrestleMania was primarily remembered to be Bret Harts last WM as well as Stone Cold actually winning over dozens of people after the two had a terrific match on this show. Another feud on the Card featured the WWE Championship being defended by Sycho Sid against the Undertaker. Originally it is said that HBK vs. Bret Hart was suppose to happen in a rematch but HBK's injury changed the card. However some say Shawn Michaels faked an injury because he didn't want to drop the title to anyone. That sounds like the arrogant Shawn Michaels of the 90s.

The Good - Bret Hart vs. Stone Cold was the best. Come to think of it, this is my favorite Bret Hart match in WrestleMania history. I know I lot love Owen/Bret but this one in my opinion was much more intense and awesome. Also props to the Legend of Doom and the Nation of Domination for putting up something entertaining enough to keep the crowd going even after a 5 star match.

The Meh - Well most of the other matches on the show were decent but barely anything is memorable about most of them aside from a few making WM debuts like Rocky Mavia and Mankind. Even Hunter & Goldust isn't that memorable despite it being a pretty good match.

The Bad - I'm sorry but Sycho Sid in the main event was a slap in the face. I don't know who's idea it was to put him in a long match against the Undertaker in the main event at WrestleMania. He was always boring in my opinion. Rocky vs. Sulton was garbage but luckily Rock would have better matches for the future WrestleManias.

Overall - Pretty much a one match show. I recommend just skipping to Bret Hart vs. Stone Cold and ignoring the rest of the card if you're just interested in seeing good of this PPV. If not for the 5 Star Match the show probably would have gotten a more terrible rating than it has right now.

0 = Terrible: 1 = Bad/Lackluster: 2 = Decent: 3 = Good: 4 = Awesome: 5 = One of the best of all time:

1. Headbangers vs. Goodwins vs. New Blackjacks vs. Doug Furnas & Phil LaFon - 2/5

2. Rocky Mavia vs. The Sulton: Intercontinental Championship - 1.5/5

3. Hunter Hurst Helmsley vs. Goldust - 3/5

4. Vader & Mankind vs. British Bulldog & Owen Hart: World Tag Team Championship - 2/5

5. Stone Cold Steve Austin vs. Bret Hart (Submission Match) - 5/5

6. L. O. D & Aumed Johnson vs. Nation of Domination (Street Fight) - 2/5

7. Undertaker vs. Sycho Sid: WWE Championship - 1.5/5

Best Match - Bret Hart vs. Stone Cold Steve Austin

Worst Match - Rocky Mavia vs. The Sulton

Most Memorable Moment - The Shot of Austin's bloody face of him refusing to give up in the sharpshooter

Top 5 Performers

1. Stone Cold Steve Austin

2. Bret Hart

3. L. O. D

4. Undertaker

5. Nation of Domination

5/10 Mediocre.

GREAT EVENT FROM A TIME WHEN THE WWF WAS AT IT'S BEST
Big Movie Fan1 May 2002
In my opinion 1997 was one of the WWF's best years. So much happened during 1997. The Undertaker had some great matches. Ditto Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels. The New Hart Foundation feuded with Stone Cold Steve Austin. Stars such as Mankind and Ahmed Johnson improved throughout the year and the tag team scene was phenomenal.

In the main event Sycho Sid battled the Undertaker. These two had wrestled in mediocre matches during late 1991/early 1992 but this match was brilliant and exceeded my expectations.

Bret Hart had an entertaining scrap with Stone Cold Steve Austin in a match refereed by Ken Shamrock. Great match but I've never understood why Bret was booed after the match.

Goldust and Hunter Hearst Helmsley had a good match too and performed above their usual standards.

There were many other great matches as well. One of my favourites pitted Davey Boy Smith and the late Owen Hart VS Vader and Mankind in a mega match.

This was a great event. For some reason even the mediocre wrestlers gave 110% and put on a good show for the fans. This event was the way things should be all the time.
