A Classic.... Mithunda & Jackie are terrific...
namashi_17 February 2010
Rajiv Babbar's box-office super-duper-hit 'Shapath' is escapist cinema at it's best. A highly-entertaining film with Mithunda & Jackie delivering terrific performances.

My advice to all who haven't seen this killer flick yet: Don't look for logic in 'Shapath', it's an out-and-out masala film, it's for those who enjoy Hindi Cinema for it's ever-lasting escapism. Remember my advice!

Altaf Raja delivered a super-hit song in here, 'Ishq Aur Pyar Ka', which proved to be a smash hit. In fact, it became a rage across the nation. Babbar's direction is superb, this is his best work.

Acting wise, as mentioned, Mithunda & Jackie are in terrific form. Both of the Legendary actors are a treat to watch. Shakti Kapoor is excellent, his comedy track is truly hilarious. Ramya looked great then and her performance is up-to the mark. Kader Khan, Gulshan Grover & Salim Ghose are perfect in their parts. Others lend able support.

I loved 'Shapath', I've seen this film many, many times. So of course, I recommend this film to all Hindi Cinema Fans! Thumbs Up!

Mithunda's best post moving to Ooty Movie!!
Boy_with_no_name24 January 2014
Around the mid 90's when the next generation of stars(the 3 Khan's and Khiladi Kumar mainly) our 80's Superstars either went into politics (Vinod Khanna & Shatrughan Sinha); went into semi retired-ness(Jeetendra,Rishi Kapoor); kept working in B grade or even C grade films (Dharmendra)or just kept on struggling till they hit it big again (Amitabh Bachchan). Mithunda being younger and physically in way better shape than these guys seeing that his movies were not doing so well in major cities but very successful in smaller territories and theatres even in the cities; and if they could be made cheaper could be very profitable for all involved moved to Ooty in Bangalore. He Purchased a chain of hotels there, moved there with his family and worked with mostly the same cast and crews to make cheap but not necessarily bad action-thriller movies.Shapath is the best of them!Trust me I've seen all of them.

The main plot deals with the mystery regarding the killing of local politicians by the cities gangsters to keep their bought and paid for politician in power. It's very intricately plotted since we don't know till the very end who's the boss(course it's kind of guessable)but the fun is in watching Dada and Jackie solve the puzzle together and kick some serious ass along the way.The action sequences are very, very well done.Specially the climax where it's just one long sequence running for around 25 minutes and it's some serious carnage including cars blasting, limbs tearing,3-4 guys jumping in the air after getting kicked and bursting through glass walls.Kudos to action director Rambo.

One of the best things about the movie is it's solid supporting cast with nobody hamming or phoning it in.Kader Khan,Gulshan Grover,Salim Ghouse,Ranjeet(my favourite)and Raza Murad are the bad guys; what a line-up.Achyut podtar in a rare positive role was surprising. And Shakti Kapoor & Guddi Maruti were wonderful as the comic relief's. Karina Grover was hot.Jackie and Ramya were OK but the movie belongs to Dada.Playing a disgraced commando turned drunken mafia enforcer he belongs in a Japanese samurai movie. And he's awesome.

The music is pretty good too.Specially "Chuski" and the superhit "Thoda intezaar ka mazaa li jiye" with our two heroes shaking a leg with none other than the singer Altaaf Raja himself in a cameo.

GOOD/ABOVE AVERAGE - Mithun on top form ** Contains Minor Spoiler **
a_niwaz29 March 2008
Warning: Spoilers
Mithun made lots of stupid & pointless films in the 90's but out of those countless films, he made about 6-10 good/watchable films and Shapath is one of them, Yes thats right!! Shapath is good. The film has its own storyline which is not exactly new but it is overall very entertaining and Mithun-Jackie as usual deliver good performances, However it is Mithun who steals the show yet again. The film has a great song by Altaf Raja "Ishq aur pyaar ka mazaa lee jiye" (Altaf also has a guest appearance in the song video). The only thing that lets the film down was the end fight/action scene at the hospital which was inspired from Hard Boiled (but then again Bollywood has been doing this for a long time so it doesn't really matter). There are a lot of films starring Mithun-Jackie: Aaag Hi Aag, Phool Aur Aag, Ustadon Ke Ustad, Ganga Ki Kasam, These films were totally brainless, boring & crap all thanks to the director T.L.V Prasad however the 2 films starring the Mithun-Jackie combo Shapath & Yamraaj were good, these were both directed by Rajiv Babber. Yamraaj is much better and leagues ahead of Shapath but Shapath is also a good movie in its own right. BOTTOM LINE:- Don't expect a masterpiece and watch it only as sheer entertainment & you will be entertained.

Shapath given to audience for a guaranteed disaster
superindrajit2 October 2011
Warning: Spoilers
I am a big fan of Mithun Chakraborthy but he was wasted badly starting from 1993 his movies in the early 90's were good though. From 1993 to 2000, he had more than 30 flops but the surprising thing was film makers were still signing him. Coming to the 1997 movie Shapath(Oath), a gigantic disaster. The plot of the story had many clichés throughout. The entry of Mithun saving the minister from death is so stupid. The family scenes, drama scenes, corruption disccusion scenes were good. Which explains the 1 rating I gave to the movie. The action sequences were absolutely horrible. Mithun drinking whiskey and fighting and the badguys start flying up and down. Jackie Shroff as the struggling inspector only knew how to overact by shouting. Mithun as the killer was also a bad way to create suspense and how he pretends to be the badguy and killing the badguys at the end. The heroines are all from the South and all act horribly. The only thing good about them were their lack of clothes on to seduce the badguys. But, overall avoid all Mithun-TLV Prasad movies except Shera and Zakhmi Sipahi.
