Very interesting dynamics. Sad, but interesting.
cerebralchap19 April 2004
I found this particular piece to be so tough to swallow, that the reality was unbearable. As a society, we either choose to learn and grow from each obstacle we encounter, or we choose to wallow in it. Although I have experienced both sides of the pain, this film brought back so many harsh memories. And while the film is a true story, maybe it should have been released as a docudrama. Hard to watch, but good. As far as the technical aspect of the piece, I found it executed with a sense of simplicity that reminded me of films from the mid to late 60's and 70's. I have never liked films that jump around from angle to angle, unless the frenetic style was important.

Superb acting. Fantastic film & Story.
davidjanollari18 June 2004
My heart ached for the past while I watched this story unfold, because it made me relive, and rethink my old friendships...my loves of my life...and the choices I made that took me away from them. It rang true to MY life as well as others that i went to the screening with, because it made me miss my friends that have passed on. I painfully loved this film, because I've lived it! It had me frozen to my seat for the entirety of the picture and even then, i knew that I wouldn't see anything else that moved me so much.

"American Reunion" takes serious things and turns them into an educational, comical and more dramatic version of life itself. The film uses characters like Larry and Cindy to show the parity of wisdom versus clarity. Larry himself represents the naive child looking at the world as an educated person without the real wisdom of his age group. To watch this film as a life lesson is probably the best thing that you can do. You feel almost as if you are as vulnerable as Larry if you've ever experienced a drug problem, instead of just pitying Larry like most people do. I think the point of the film is to show that through the eyes of a lost soul in the world, and whatever difficulties one is facing, that friendship really can seem magical if you just look at things without the cynical view finder that we seem to use today. Jamie's character has an ability to look at things more simply, having gone away, then returned to face his old friends and lovers. I think for this reason alone, this film should be considered, one of the best films ever. Even after we watched this movie with other strangers, everyone that have watched the film has the impact of empathy on it's audience so that for ten minutes after the film everyone feels wiser and unified in humanity. This film is one the greatest films of all time, if you ask me.

Compelling true love and friendship expectations at its finest!
TC Shannon5 March 2001
This story forces you to reflect and remember the friendships, that we've all had in our lives, that ultimately effected us forever. Those relationships that shaped our humanity and compassion. Those people, whose names and faces are etched in our hearts, 'til the day we die. And it seems as though, that reuniting with people that cared about us for who we were, and not what we had, can be the our truest barometer for life. It's all about the lessons we learned together, and the experiences we shared. The passions we developed, and the hopes we deployed. This story taps into the psyche, and forces you to examine the choices we've all made in our lives. No matter what the outcome. But, to know however, that if we should fail with our choices, that we would still be loved and held dear by those who truly are friends for life. American Friends & Lovers, is a refreshing point of view regarding friendship... humorously and painfully depicted in this piece.

It rocked and it made me think about people I love
decpr-931-46831123 December 2010
I saw this movie the other day when my aunt let me dig through her dvds and cds. when I saw the cover of the poster I thought it looked cool how the flags worked together to make a big flag.

Im not especially an all American girl, but I love stories that are based on real people and real experiences. It gives me a little bit more knowledge than I had before about how people have changed as communicaters.

Like old movies. Hardly any body ever faced-up someone when they got embarrassed. Now a days everybody gets merked if you they get dissed. But the thing I liked the most about this movie was the interaction between the really old friends and how they got past the mis-conceptions of each other.

Life is too short to let the little things screw everything up.

I adore this film...simply and beautifully acted
PacAtlanticPRJH21 April 2011
I don't about you or anyone else for that matter, but I love making great memories. Whether good or average...we can all make them great with a little positive drama.

When I first saw this movie...I was overwhelmed in the end when the friends saved each other, so to speak.

The leading men were extremely handsome and the girls were gorgeous. There is a scene in the movie where an actress is sitting on top of the lead male actor (Jim Fitzpatrick) and I started becoming sexually excited...and well...moist.

He is so hot! He was on one of stories All My Children. He played Pierce Riley. An artistic guy that lived in a cabin in the woods, and made love to various kinds of beautiful women, like Brooke English.

I'm so happy you made this movie
maythdr-49-2883909 May 2011
Without sounding holier than thou, I hope that my comments are not taken out of context.

A couple decades ago I was cheering with a Professional football team and several of my peers and I were at a charity event, where I met Jim Fitzpatrick. At the time Jimmy was playing for another professional football team in the same town called the Tampa Bay Bandits.

After the event about a dozen of us went to Bennegens for a bite to eat. Needless to say, libation followed. Only then did we begin talking about our personal lives, when I opened up to our group about one of my relatives committing suicide.

Jim was immediately focused and supportive simultaneously like I've never seen anyone become involved before when I talked about my cousin.

Jim had known somebody that had taken their life that he knew in high school and now I come to find out a girl he dated in high school also did the same. Jim's a very emotional guy that always cared enough to listen to other peoples problems to the point that he became somewhat like psychiatrist. Thanks for making this movie Jimmy.

It helps everybody to know they're not alone with this situation.

Knowing both of these people, I was pleasently surprised by their film
febstdr-983-7176923 January 2018
My fiance' Jonah and I used to live below the Jodi & Jim Fitzpatrick in Los Angeles back in the early 90's. They were very talented actors, but also lived their lives as common folks. No egos, no attitudes, just fun loving naturally kind hearted people. They enjoyed the holidays, especially Christmas and I remember them showing all of the Christmas cartoons "Frosty," "Charlie Brown," "Rudolph," and I remember thinking how sweet that was for all of us to watch. It brought back memories. Then one day, I remember Jimmy getting a call from his mother that his High School girlfriend shot & killed herself...shocking. But, instead of Jimmy becoming depressed, he wrote a play about their relationship and a ten year reunion called "Ten Year." I know this because my fiance' (then husband) Jonah played a role in the play. Finally when we saw the movie we were so touched and happy for them, because the movie ended-up being an homage to past loves lost and friendships taken for granted. So, Jodi & Jimmy, congratulations on making such a deeply touching film. We love you both and we miss you.

I truly enjoy true stories of life & love with a Philosophical subtext
averagejoemoviecritic28 February 2018
I have never seen a movie that was so hilariously specific to exacting a suicide attempt, as a way of saying what needed to be said to prevent it.

It appears that thousands of people that eventually do commit suicide, didn't have such a strong clique of good friends to compel the depressed person to consider the upside of a tough life.

Most people have been sheltered and babied so much, that they become such big babies when it comes to their personal needs and unrequited desires, that it's important to spell-out the good times and memories that placed them in such a negative situation.

Psychology is stranger and deeper than most people could ever imagine, unless you've known that person for years and years. It's a great thing to show the importance of friendship and support, through-out our lives. This pseudo true story is money when it describes relationships past and future with this prose.

ex: The character Jamie is asked, "Do you ever finds it's harder to give someone new everything you have, when you've already given someone else, everything you had?" DEEP...and true. I found this project to be beautifully shot and on the money with the acting and directing. What a subtle gem!

Honestly...good acting...horrid premise
CarrieHarris1 January 2006
I was under the assumption that Yanks had cornered the market on celluloid fluff. Have I ever so rarely caught a flick that expressed any type of reality beyond it's typical title. Unfortunately for those of us whose curiosities are captured by that all inclusive punchline, I leased this DVD. The writer slams you in face with his pensive ideals, just as he invokes his bosom buddies to accept the pain he can't climb over. Quite a task for a two hour flick. I was amused by the trysts, clever, however, the Director slash writer clogged the palate with personal ops. Overall, the show was straight and narrow yet searching for a more threatening ending. Not that suicide isn't dangerous, I truly felt, that a gun...or a speeding car at a cliff might of been more intense. The lead actors were true, as were the lead actresses. All in all, the flick was pseudo good.

Good, but not brilliant.
ciaob1 November 2005
I have a very serious issues with writers that bring their problems to the silver screen. Not only have you invaded the privacy of real persons that are out there to be examined on a public, worldwide basis, but those same persons are virtually held captive in the celluloid world of unchanging expectations. Whence an individual prospects for a 'True' story to view, and that prospector is a friend of a friend of a character depicted in the story, that charatcer's private relationship is exposed for everyone to chew. Somehow, the film delivered a painful reality, for those of us which have peers that have taken their lives. A guilt...that never rests.

Amazing truths, that hurt your heart.
filmeditor-426 February 2005
I haven't seen any other projects that Jim Fitzpatrick has written, but this one is excellent. It has the honest feel for the lives of the middle-class people, and it tells an interesting story. Fitzpatrick plays a Soap Opera Star (which was true) who blows back into his old hometown looking for the girl he left behind 15 years earlier. Only he finds that she (Jodi Knotts) is now married to ex-best friend, played by John Bradley. You can feel how much these two loved each other. You can feel how much they want to be together. Jodi Knotts is such a joy to watch. She is one of the most interesting actresses I've ever seen. All of her inner emotions and the turmoil she feels is there in her eyes for everyone to see each time the camera looks her way. Fitzpatrick is also great as Jamie, the ex-love of her life. The rest of the main supporting cast do fine jobs as well. If you like real-life Romantic dramas, look no further. 'An American Reunion,' will envelope your heart and touch your soul...great love story at it's finest.

Love, Love, Love, Pain and more love!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
jwyatt-310 February 2005
For those of you who are fans of romance, this story will be every bit as predictable and even more enjoyable than those written in books. The story line is a bit contrived, but I couldn't help falling in love with the characters. Jodi Knotts is great as the yearning ex-girlfriend, now yearning wife, of Jim's character's best friend in the middle of a life that's missed the love of a lifetime. And Jim Fitzpatrick has NEVER looked better than while he is wondering and pondering reclaiming his highschool love that never faded from his memory. A definite chick flick! Great payoff at the end... Ladies, tell me how great Jimmy Fitzpatrick has aged... Dear Lord! ABC was crazy to let this one get away! Fitzpatrick's also quite a writer.

A Beautiful Man with a beautiful heart
sarag-119 May 2005
I am truly looking forward to my ten year reunion now. This movie has peaked my interest in how my friends have turned out and what they are doing for a living. After graduating high school I came to New York, then went to Los Angeles, then to Miami, then...

The guy that wrote this story has been deeply affected by his high school days, and I think that's wonderful. Most people just move on with their lives but this guy, has hit a major nerve with this movie. My first love, my first romance, and my first experience with losing a close friend all happened right after high school. I think about the friends and lovers and even the one night stands I had, in high school all the time. Sometimes it saddens me, but I choose to remember them, and their smiles. Great movie Mr. Fitzpatrick. I just never give any movies a ten.

Beautiful story. My heart aches watching.
oscarw-310 May 2005
There's are less few movies make today, that touch me anymore like life touch me. I have a very tough expectation for stories and all the money that they make and all they are is special effects and big stars that just work on them for the money. When i get this movie at the video store, i get it because it was based on a true happening and I wanted to see what Americans do at their reunion partys. It start out with the past pictures and what they do and then the movie begins. I enjoyed it because it make me think of my friends growing up. I think it important to remember who make who you are today, and that is the main storyline. Never forget you friends. Love them. Love you families. Never forget anytime in you life, if you want to be a good person with a good heart. Ciao.

I am Officially, a James Fitzpatrick fan, now.

My boyfriend and I were blown away by this man's humanity and talents in this film. Harold, my Beau, FORCED me to view U.S. Seals, Delta Force lll, ll, and l, and lV, and...so when I saw his favourite actor, Jim Fitzpatrick (IV) was starring in a drama, I made Harry, forced Harry, to watch the film with me. 'American Reunion,' was not only dramatic and heart-warming, it was extremely insightful into dealing with friends that are drug addicts. Which, I have. Sir, we appreciate your honesty in this piece, and we enjoyed your other talents, acting, directing, and so on. Cheers to you and your writing career. We will be viewing other films of yours, whether you are writing them, directing them, or acting in them. And some day I hope to work along side of you.

Bravo! Talk about a Triple Threat...
mzoumas4 May 2005
I usually don't enjoy dramatic romance types of shows...but...this one was very special. The words, the relationships were absolutely on the money with me. It is sometimes hard to admit you have said and done the same thing, because we all want to be perfect. Jim Fitzpatrick is a very talented young man. And I say this with great conviction because I saw the Two Act Play, which he also wrote, produced and directed called 'Ten Year,' which this film is based on. And it is almost word for word, on the money with the play. By the end of the second act, people around me were sobbing. Talk about association of the heart. It doesn't get any better than this for a true story. Corby Timbrook, the drug addict was very compelling to watch. Almost sickening at a few points, because of my younger life when I dealt with my demons, the very same way. Thank God for friends. Bravo to you all.

I entirely comply with this lads tagline
claudi-112 February 2006
A bit of bad news for those of us scads that have felt a twinge or a pang of anxiousness after deciding to carry on with a brand new affair. When ever it is, it is a bit of a breaker to beat the same path down to someone's heart. It seems a catch to bring about a doodle of flowers with an innocent grin once you have been gardening in knee deep love for another. Never would I claim to understand the texture of another's desire, yet, whence you catch that glimpse, you feel the past creeping upon your anguish. To love once is brilliant if you should die in that lovers bed. But, should you repeat the process of courting, kissing and bedding for love, more than twice as I have, it pains your soul. The memories remind you of the first love letter...the first sight of your lovers frame. Love then tends to become common an not such a grande finally to life, as we thought it once. Cheers to the Gent, for bleeding upon the page.

Lookers, all of them. Yet good.
naznico15 June 2005
This cast of actors has got to be one a the sharpest lookers I've ever seen in a film. The shirley that plays the vampires has definitely got it going-on. The acting was very impressive, even though most the blokes are all probably ex-models. Certainly, the guy that played Robin Hood on the TV Series was a model. I thought the backdrop of the reunion was clever. The directing was ever so spot on. It appeared seamless, and all the subplots all melded fairly well. The ingredient I was more impressed with than all the others compared, was the writing. The script was SPOT-ON. One appreciates philosophy subtly integrated into film, without bashing your head in. It was obvious these actors knew each other before this film started shooting, like the article I read about it, that lead me to rent it. They worked well together. Impressive.

Fitzy's the real deal...a real Pro!
boomboy10 July 2005
I just completed working on a project with Jimmy called Distortion, and he was the only actor that came to the set prepared. He didn't have a script in his hand, he didn't have to have the script supervisor feed him lines, and he actually helped the writer, director and lead actor of the film, with his dialogue. Then I went on this website and saw that he has costarred with academy award winning actors. He learned from the best, and that's why he's a consummate professional. I'm looking forward to watching this movie. I'm sure he did his homework. I've seen a couple other of his movies that he just acted in, like Seals and Delta Force, and he was very good. The scripts weren't all that fantastic but Fitzy was good. Good luck with your films Fitzy, it was a pleasure working with you.

Scary-Good Actor!
pacpics14 September 2005
I cannot believe how unbelievable Jimmy Fitzpatrick was in a scary flic that's coming out next year called The Ranch. I mean SCARY-SCARY, hide your wife and children SCARY.

A couple years ago I was invited to go to the Premiere screening of this movie, An American Reunion, which Jimmy wrote, directed and starred in. And Jimmy was stereotypically a quiet, shy and almost humble soap actor that didn't want to create any waves among his old friends, because he felt guilty for leaving them behind. He was believable. He was convincing. But he was almost melancholy, and borderline overly-sensitive. Then I saw a rough cut cut of the Ranch (a VHS third generation Editor's copy).

Oh-My-God! Jimmy Fitz is a freak. There's no doubt in my mind that he can play-act with the best of them. He reminded me, of DeNiro's character in Cape fear. Evil, but charismatic. Sick but interesting. If I never see him in anything else, I will always have that gross looking long-gray-haired-killer-psychopath, stuck in my head forever. Dirty face and all. A long way from the polished, sensitive 'Pierce Riley' of the soap All My Children.
