Innovative rock n' roll police camp from 80's Brazil
guisreis14 November 2022
Unique and mostly forgotten colorful Brazilian movie with the stamp of the 80's. Cartoonish and kitsch, with good cinematography and bizarre costumes, it is aesthetically innovative. The story is camp, with elements of nonsense and even surrealism. Soundtrack brings Brazilian rock n' roll, with members of band Titãs in minor roles, and Lobão playing an officer in a not unimportant supporting role. Diogo Vilela, Regina Casé, Luiz Fernando Guimarães and Cristina Aché play the main characters. The story, about a gang of terrorists and robbers, has violent moments, but they seem actually very light due the unrealistic way in which the film is composed. The story is supposedly held in fictional Province of Kali, in an unnamed country, where there is a special police wearing quirky uniform... but ironically there is a Maracanã stadium where Flamengo plays (against Vasco da Gama, what is not mentioned), what makes obvious that the place is Rio de Janeiro! The story happens five years in the future (then, in 1990), probably just for exploring somehow a futuristic aesthetics in costumes, as there is no difference for the messy script. Worth watching, not as a masterpiece of seventh art, but as an amusing production that finds its own path and deviates from mainstream.
