France’s Oscar committee has shortlisted four movies, including Jacques Audiard’s redemption thriller “Emilia Perez” and “The Count of Monte Cristo,” an epic adventure film adapted from Alexandre Dumas’ classic, as well as Payal Kapadia‘s “All We Imagine as Light” and Alain Guiraudie’s “Misericordia.”
All four movies word premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. “Emilia Perez” won two major awards, the Jury Prize and a best actress nod for its ensemble female cast, Karla Sofía Gascón, Selena Gomez, Zoe Saldana and Adriana Paz; while “All We Imagine as Light,” a tale of two Mumbai nurses bonding, won the Grand Prize, becoming the first Indian film in 30 years to win the award. Kapadia was also the first Indian female director to compete at Cannes. The Simpsons has proven to be surprisingly relevant in modern politics these days — from the show’s accidental prediction of Kamala Harris’ candidacy, to the way Ted Cruz keeps referencing episodes in a failed effort to seem not horrible. So perhaps it’s not that surprising that one classic episode showcased a conspiracy theory that seems to crop up in every single election cycle.
Season Six’s “Sideshow Bob Roberts” finds Bart’s archenemy running as the Republican candidate for Mayor of Springfield, and winning in a landslide thanks to the help of a Rush Limbaugh-esque blowhard. But with a Deep Throat-like informant (Smithers) on their side, Bart and Lisa are able to discover Bob’s nefarious scheme: Most of the votes came from dead people, including Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and The Big Bopper.

Sideshow and Janus Films have acquired all North American rights to Vermiglio, written, directed and produced by Maura Delpero. The drama recently had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival where it won the Silver Lion Grand Jury Prize. Yesterday, it screened in the Special Presentations section of the Toronto International Film Festival. Sideshow and Janus are planning a theatrical release in the coming months.
Vermiglio is set in 1944, in the titular high-mountain village of the Italian Alps where war looms as a distant but constant threat. The arrival of Pietro, a refugee soldier, disrupts the dynamics of the local teacher’s family, changing them forever. During the four seasons marking the end of World War II, Pietro and Lucia, the eldest daughter of the teacher, are instantly drawn to each other, led to marriage and to an unexpected fate. As the world emerges from its tragedy, the family will face its own.

Sideshow and Janus Films have scooped up North American rights to Maura Delpero’s acclaimed Italian period drama Vermiglio, winner of the Venice Film Festival’s silver lion grand jury prize.
The film debuted in competition in Venice and received its North American premiere Tuesday night at the Toronto Film Festival. Sideshow and Janus say they will release the title in North American theaters in the coming months.
Vermiglio is a follow-up to Delpero’s well-received 2019 directorial debut Maternal. She wrote, directed and produced the new feature, which is loosely based on her own family history.
“We were deeply moved and impressed by Vermiglio, a new Italian classic that is intimate in scale but epic in scope, unfolding like a memory over four ravishingly shot seasons during the Second World War,” said Sideshow and Janus Films.

Exclusive: Eo, filmmaker Jerzy Skolimowski’s Oscar-nominated tale about a wandering donkey, has found a streaming home.
The film will debut Tuesday on the Criterion Channel as a title for subscribers, and will be available the same day for purchase or rental on Apple, Amazon and Vudu.
After almost four months in theaters, the film continues to bring in audiences. It is expected to cross 1 million at the North American box office within the next week. The film has been playing exclusively in theaters to this point and has offered hope for the specialty sector, which has not seen the across-the-board rebound in attendance enjoyed by horror films and studio tentpoles.
This is the second release for Sideshow, the distributor behind Drive My Car, a similarly long-simmering theatrical title which earned nominations last year in multiple Oscar categories, including Best Picture. Sideshow and Janus Films boarded Eo last June after...

It has 4.4 million monthly visitors and 800 million monthly page views.
Since launch, users have logged a whopping 1 billion films they’ve seen, put 300 million films on watchlists and posted 76.8 million reviews. Average time spent per visitor per month across web and app is about 40 minutes.
