A solid opening episode.
Sleepin_Dragon8 February 2018
Francesca and friends hold a seance in a basement cafe, chilling prophecies are received and normal life continues. However, five years later, those prophecies begin coming true, and one by one members of that group begin to lose their lives. Francesca has had better luck, meeting the wealthy Oliver Halkin, and his son Edward. Francesca discovers that Edward has a deep interest in the deaths of her friends.

Prophecy serves as a solid opening episode in the series, the episode relies on acting and great story telling as opposed to special effects. It is indeed good storytelling, I was reminded of Final Destination, parallel in a way that one by one people meet with grizzly ends, all seemingly accidental.

Sophie Ward is excellent, such a beautiful, talented actress, whatever she appears in she adds something extra to. Nigel Havers very good as always, as was Tony Haygarth.

More psychological drama then chiller, but still very watchable.

Based on author's novel of the same name

Peter James' 1992 novel brought to film but a little less gristly than the original. Some changes since an Ouija board is the conduit that beckons evil forward while it is a seance in this story. Otherwise follows the plot closely, maybe too closely. What works in book form doesn't always translate well to screen. Tighter editing would have made for a less convoluted story but there's still good acting and atmosphere galore. Recommended for a one time watch but not one you will go back to again and again.

Doesn't capture the magic of previous anthologies.
khunkrumark1 September 2019
The acting talent elevates this silliness. The anthology was made on the back of genuinely spooky programs such as Armchair Thriller, Tales of the Unexpected, and The Agatha Christie Hour which scared us all back in the 1980s. But this series blew its budget on the actors, not the writers or the production itself. It's still watchable, but some of that attraction comes from the nostalgic value. Very MTV, big shoulder pads and hair, etc.

There's almost no story to speak of... some kids go down into a basement and have a seance, one by one they die. There's a convoluted thread which ties the deaths together and a last minute prayer to end it all.

"Hey, what happens if we raise the dead?"

Warning: Spoilers
A quick jump in the time line and abrupt scene changes can make this episode a little hard to follow, although if you stay with it you should be alright. The story involves a seance that took place five years earlier than the present, with ramifications that occur to the principals who participated in it. As the story progresses, a common link appears to involve the misfortunes of all who attended the seance, with young Edward (Tom Piccin), who witnessed the hit and run death of his mother that precipitated their adversities. The Latin phrase 'Non Omnis Moriar' keeps popping up in various circumstances, and it's translation, 'I shall not altogether die', seems to suggest that death may not visit all of the original seven, though terrible accidents or illnesses are still in play. The principal character from the seance is Frannie Monsanto (Sophie Ward), and her relationship with Oliver Hankin (Nigel Havers) brings her into chilling contact with his son Edward, channeling the evil spirit of a long lost ancestor brought forth by the seance of years ago. With a brief reprieve suggested by the intervention of a Catholic priest (Tony Haygarth), the episode ends with an insinuation that the evil bloodline will be perpetuated with the son of Frannie and Oliver.

I was shocked to find this show on Amazon Prime. It's really quite good, and I'll be honest, the actress that plays Frannie is gorgeous enough to warrant watching.
