What movie was that first guy watching?
Canterbury3 November 2001
I caught this independent film a couple months ago at the Rhode Island Film Festival (where Cacho-Negrete won first prize for best first-time director, by the way). The story focuses on Clarke's character, who was so young when he finished college that he never really, well, got the entire college experience. Now he is a high school teacher between school years. His collegiate buddies, with whom he ends up spending the summer in the Liars Club bar on the North Side, have all kinds of talents and encourage him to cast a wider net, in spite of his long-standing affection for Johnson. Let us just say that Clarke comes of age in Chicago that summer, in more ways than one.

Tip of the cap to Shaw and Marley, both of whom wonderfully portray the kind of guys everybody knew in college. "Kevin" almost steals the show as a convincing Bostonian, and there are a few obscure Red Sox references in there, you might want to watch your tapes of the 1986 World Series to get the lines. Donavan and McDermott are that couple we all recognized as oblivious to the rest of the world, and despised for their happiness. Pay attention to the dialogue, especially in the restaurant early on.

Now, I don't work at a movie theater, and I wouldn't know a Morphing Power Ranger if I saw one, no matter how mighty, and I am certain that I could resist. Honest opinion: good flick, and I look forward to Cacho-Negrete's (what kind of name is that?) next one. Good to have seen this talent at the ground floor.

That's Life...
pamarshall1 November 2001
I saw the movie "Liar's Club" during a screening in Chicago. For single guys living in Chicago (or any other urban locale), I thought the script showed an accurate portrayal of what 20-something guys do with their lives. Play pickup hoops, go to bars, talk a lot of smack about picking up chicks, and occasionally get some action (some of course, more than others).

Bob Marley was funny. And Elisa Donovan from "Sabrina the Teenage Witch" is a total doll (I wanted to see more of her on camera).

Although not ready for an Oscar nomination, I thought the acting and directing was quite promising, especially knowing the budget they were working under during the filming. A light-hearted romantic comedy about guys trying to figure out the game of life...I've been there myself and could totally relate.

Formulaic

Warning: Spoilers
I saw this film in Chicago. I really wanted to like it because the guys involved graduated from the same school I did. However, the movie was formulaic and a rip-off of Swingers. Nice guy hitting the bars in an attempt to meet women with the help of his cad-like friends. Sounds familiar? In fact, Bob Marley constantly uses the phrase "Chickens" to describe women, if you substitute the words "Beautiful Babies" you have Vince Vaughan's character in Swingers. But while Vaughan's character is a cad, he's weirdly likable, Marley's character, on the other hand, seems a little misogynistic which I found disturbing. The acting was very lackluster. In fact, Jason Shaw's Brad seems to owe his inclusion in the script to Jason's good looks than any function of story. What purpose does this guy serve than eye candy? Don't get me wrong, I like Jason. The ending with Elisa Donavan's character seemed tacked on for shock value. It wasn't foreshadowed. Every book I've read on writing (and I've read a few) states an ending that continues to confound after the audience has time to think it over is a bad one.

While the movie does make good use of its Chicago location, this is a skip it movie.

Bring on the chicken!

I work at a Hoyts Cinemas in South Portland Maine, and on this coming up Thursday, November 1st, my theater is having the world premiere for this film. I was one of the "lucky" ones and watched the film last night before the world premeire. It was my girlfriend, two other employees I work with and I who were attending. I must say this was one of the worst pieces of trash I have ever seen. My only reason for watching it was the fact that the Pink Ranger from Mighty Morphing Power Rangers was in it. How could I possibly resist? This so called "film" was nothing about characters that I hated and didn;t care for in anyway. I think in its entire run it will make about 30 bucks. Its that lame.

Best movie I have seen

My friends and I attended a Los Angeles Screening. The Liars Club was so funny. We could not stop laughing. It is a must see movie for you who have not had the chance to see it. My friends and I want to see it again. It is a two thumbs up in my opinion. Probably the best comedy/romance movie ever. I rate it a "10"

Quite funny
filmbuffri2 November 2001
I went to the world premiere for this film last night and found it thoroughly enjoyable. Obviously, it's a small movie, but the dialogue is great and it looks just like a bigger budget film. Of course, the actors aren't Robert Deniro, but they really hold their own. I would strongly recommend this film to anyone who likes great dialogue and funny characters. Just be ready to accept the fact that the film is full of unknown actors (though I gotta think that the guy who plays "Kevin" won't be for long) and is quite "raw" at times. However, if you only like big studio movies with big budgets and big actors (so you hated stuff like Clerks, Mallrats, Ed's Next Move, etc.), you might be better off seeing something else.

Sex in the City for Men!

Looking for a good laugh or a little romance? Then, Liars Club is the movie for you! Between Bob Marley's hilarious comedy and 2 simultaneous love stories- you are completely caught up in this movie.

Watching the guys try to pick up women is just too funny! I thought I was going to fall out of my seat I was laughing so hard.

Although some of these actors are new-comers, you will recognize some familiar faces like Amy Jo Johnson from Felicity, Jason Show the supermodel, Elisa Donovan from Clueless.

A hilarious look at dating from the guy's perspective
WindyCityKate1 November 2001
Liars Club had me rolling in the aisles. Bob Marley steals the show with his witty banter and clever one-liners. This funny look at dating from the male perspective was an eye-opener for me! And, girls, you have to see Jason Shaw. He definitely gives Brad Pitt a run for his money! Definite eye candy!

While these guys are new on the scene- there are other familiar faces, like Elisa Donovan from Clueless and Sabrina. She's the character I most identified with throughout the film. And Amy Jo Johnson of Pink Power Ranger fame was fun to watch in a very different role than I had ever seen her in before.

I give this movie 2 thumbs up! It's a guy movie, a chick flick, and a date movie all rolled into one! Go see it- you won't be disappointed!

A sleeper hit!
WindyCityKate27 June 2003
They just showed this movie at my college reunion in Chicago, and it was hilarious. Everyone in the audience was laughing out loud! For the most part, the acting is pretty top notch. And Elissa Donovan (Clueless) and Jason Shaw (Tommy Hilfiger model) are great to watch. Really a great comedy flick if you are lucky enough to find it!
