Warning: Spoilers
I was lucky enough to see 35 mm print of SIDEWALK COWBOY ( now titled DIRTY BIRD ) at a recent Grindhouse show here in London Ontario. The print was such poor condition it broke 3 times but the movie itself was totally entertaining. Character names are now a blur to me because the credits of the film were written on a chalk board so I will improvise a bit here.

Buddy goes on tour with his rock band and leaves his hot to trot girlfriend alone in her apartment. Within 4 minutes Buddy's best friend moves in with her with nothing more than white jeans, a fuzzy sweater and 20 bucks in his pocket. She soon realizes that his 20 bucks ain't going to last long and tosses him to the street. There he is forced to walk around with large king cans of beer and stare into shop windows. Plenty of great shots of old movie houses and dirty alleys. I was unsure where this film was actually filmed because there is a close up of a newspaper that says Toronto but the streets looked like old NYCs the Deuce in the late 60s.

The Sad Sack star of the film soon encounters a rich woman who wants him to "perform" with her while her husband watches with his super 8 movie camera. He says yes but 1/2 way through is "performance" he is blasted with memories of his mother catching him with an old blue magazine and cracking his knuckles with an wooden ruler. He starts tripping and leaves the poor gal high and dry. After what seems like 10 full minutes of pure walking and beer drinking Sad Sack finally decides he needs the cash so bad he sucks up his pride and goes back to the rich woman for a pay day. Her offer was $85.00 After this the movie looks like Jess Franco takes over the direction cause it goes all over the place but it had the 30 or so people in the theater busting a gut with the laughs. Some of the film looks dubbed , and it features the longest blues guitar riff in film history.

I am guessing with the 4 or so tall boys total budget for "Sidewalk Cowboy" was about $145.98 Although there is a ton of female and male nudity nothing graphic is ever shown.

We were told at the start of the show that a DVD release is coming soon so keep your fingers crossed.....or not
