The best of PSone racers

I had fond memories of playing this game when I first got it as a gift from a relative of mine; actually it was the first PS game I ever bought but I remember the joy of tearing down the tracks at breakneck speeds in the most coolest cars around.

As was the case with games of this type, the graphics were really great on the PS, especially when you race near a lake on one of the tracks and at night. Namco sure knows how to work it's magic as far as graphics and sound is concerned which brings me to one of the many highlights of the game and that's the music. With so many tight tunes to listen to, you'll be playing the disk in your CD player while cruising the streets for real in your ride. The music complements the game perfectly, featuring a delicious blend of jazz, rock, house, and techno. There are so many memorable tracks I couldn't say which one was better than the other. It's that good.

The controls are great to, especially with the Necon controller (which is pretty much extinct) but for a better experience with any racing game, I recommend a driving wheel as you'll really feel the sensation of speed being recreated in the comfort of your own room and with 2 player option, you are set for a real rush.

Sigh. Reiko Nagase.

Not much to say really. She most certainly earned her status as one of the first virtual racing queens of the gaming world.

The real meat of the game is the racing. As you progress, you earn money to upgrade your car or purchase a new car. That was what made the game so compelling and adds a surprising amount of strategy as you decide whether to improve performance or save up and buy a new machine. Sadly, this feature never carried over into the later installments. Guess I'll have to settle for Gran Tourismo.

But I say that after beating the game, I felt wholly satisfied as a nice ending credit scene plays out accompanied by a very nice musical piece that forever lingered in my mind. Ahhhh such good memories.

Although it's a dated game, it still gives you plenty of arcade thrills at home. Rage Racer was the first game that I bought for my now-ancient PSone and even till this day I still pop it in to relive some good childhood memories.
