I'm almost ashamed of how much I love this movie. It's funny because I first started watching these Educational Archive shorts for the camp factor, but some of them had such good moral lessons I got sucked it for real. This one hit close to home because, like many people, I felt like an outsider in high school. I can see the signs of the same depression I had in the Susan Jane character, and the voice providing her anxious thoughts really captures the self-defeating things a depressed person thinks in social situations.
With that said, though, there are a hell of a lot of hings to laugh at in this film too, from the dialog to the performances, and especially the crazy southern accents. I'm from Georgia myself, but I've never even heard some of these particular accents before in the southeast. The line "aww, forget her - let's go over to Lewis' and look at television" gets me every time, mostly because of the kid's accent but also because I'd never heard "look at television" before.
The melodrama of Susan's crying to her mother about her plight can also be funny. Additionally, get a load of the wackass sandals Susan is wearing throughout. They make her feet look about three times too big for her body.
