I was extremely excited when I heard about the existence of a Wipeout game on the PS2 and after I finally tracked it down, I played it for weeks...solidly. In fact, if I have only one criticism of this game, it is that Wipeout Fusion is so addictive that you will not stop until you unlock all of the ships and all of the tracks!
Gameplay - There is nothing different about this installment, you fly an anti-gravity racer around space-aged tracks and, at the same time, try to destroy your components using a multitude of weapon pick-ups. Again, mostly the same sort of weapons; rockets, grenades, quake, plasma bolt, gravity bomb, speed boost etc. There are also game modes including time trial, arcade, tournament, challenges and the new Zone mode.
Graphics - Very good, the tracks are especially detailed and the movement is smooth. I seem to remember though how the last games on the PS1 have also always been very well designed.
Soundtrack - A good selection, mostly break beats which suits me fine. Nothing too high tempo or overwhelming which can help if, like me, you can get quite frustrated when you don't win!! I would have like to see more songs on the soundtrack and perhaps one or two more genres to mix it up a bit.
To sum up, this is a very satisfying game, particularly if you are a fan of previous games but even if you have not played any before, this should be enough to get anyone hooked.
For me - 9/10 (A must have!)
