For a decade, advertisers tried to pretend that pink videogame hero Kirby was tough and not cute. We look back at some odd campaigns...
If you’ve ever owned a Nintendo console, you’ll probably have heard of Kirby: the pink, baby-faced blob who first made his debut back in 1992. Created by Hal Laboratory, Kirby’s starred in a string of platformers and quirky spin-offs over the past 23 years, beginning with Kirby’s Dream Land on the Game Boy and leading up to this year's Kirby: Planet Robobot on the 3Ds.

More than 70 years ago, Fred Glover was a member of the British Airborne Division in World War II when his glider was hit by anti-aircraft fire during the 1944 Normandy landings over the Merville Battery battlefield in northwest France. Falling thousands of miles to the ground, the Brighton native crashed into a nearby orchard, sustaining wounds to his legs. Captured by German patrols, he was offered pardon and recouped from his injuries at a Parisian hospital - and later escaped with support from the French Resistance. On Saturday, at the age of 90, Glover did the fall again - this time to...

Supernatural concludes its most consistently strong season for a while with a finale that's still capable of surprising fans...
This review contains spoilers.
11.23 Alpha And Omega
With a Road So Far and a Carry On My Wayward Son, we’re at the eleventh season finale of Supernatural. Amara has shaken off the attack from the angels, demons and witches, ripped Lucifer from Cas’ body and mortally wounded Chuck. And yet God dying isn’t the only problem that the Winchesters must face. Amara, by slowly killing God, is killing the Sun and bringing literal darkness to the planet as the dark/light balance she and her brother represent is thrown out of whack. The solution appears to be killing Amara and the gang come up with a plan to convert Dean into a bomb, harnessing the power of souls to blast Amara away.

The Winchester brothers assemble a motley crew of Darkness fighters with God on their side in Supernatural's latest episode...
This review contains spoilers.
11.22 We Happy Few
First of all, let me apologise for the slight mix-up in last week’s review as I misread my episode list and thought we were on the penultimate episode. But it wasn’t and now this is the penultimate episode so hooray for slightly more Supernatural!
It means we’ve got a bit more time for the Winchesters to rally the troops, but the trouble is, all of the troops have various familial relations that aren’t exactly on the best of terms. The brothers first have to get Lucifer and Chuck back on the same side and from there, it’s a case of assembling their ragtag bunch of merry men, including angels, Crowley and Rowena to band together to stop Amara.

The Winchester boys have been waiting for God, oh, and season 11's penultimate episode shows what Supernatural does best...
This review contains spoilers.
11.21 All In The Family
Having revealed himself to Dean and Sam, Chuck finds himself with a lot of explaining to do, though his plan as far as Amara goes may not be quite what the brothers are expecting. Metatron returns to clue them in to how God intends to take down his sister, but that’s not going to end well for just about anybody. Meanwhile, the Darkness begins to spread, taking another town out in her deathly fog, but also revealing a new Prophet of the Lord. Sam and Dean use him to track down where Amara is keeping Lucifer and set about getting him back.

Forty-six years on, few people remember (or even care) that the 1970 Kentucky Derby was won by a horse called Dust Commander. And yet, the legacy of that particular race continues to loom large — not because of what happened at Churchill Downs, but because Hunter S. Thompson was there to write about it.
"The Kentucky Derby Is Decadent and Depraved," Thompson's account of the race for Scanlan's Monthly, is the subject of Gonzo @ the Derby, a highly entertaining new entry in Espn's 30 For 30 Shorts series. (You can view the film here.

This week's Supernatural takes a strong philosophical slant, and reminds us why we fell for this show in the first place...
This review contains spoilers
11.20: Don't Call Me Shurley
Metatron is still struggling with his human existence, his only companion a dog he ruefully passes his food to. He’s suddenly magicked into a bar and, to the strains of The Beach Boys, finally comes face to face with a character oft-referred to and long absent from the world, God. Meanwhile, Amara’s making her move against the human race as Sam and Dean investigate a mysterious murder-suicide that points to a soulless individual doing the deed.
In the beginning, there was a writer. That writer’s name was Chuck. Chuck wryly smiled and disappeared in a flash of light at the end of the fifth season finale, Swan Song. Ever since that moment and his...

The Vampire Diaries had had a ludicrously busy season seven, with characters dispatched almost as quickly as they're introduced...
This review contains spoilers.
After all these years, I really should have known better than to assume The Vampire Diaries mission to wipe out all of Rayna's escaped captees would take up the rest of the season. This show doesn't do that. It doesn't introduce the final conflict more than a couple of weeks before the end of the year's run, and even then said conflict will almost certainly be different than the one we were expecting.
So Rayna's dead and Bonnie's alive. But the catch is that Bonnie will now be hell-bent on killing every vampire she finds and tortured for all eternity by the huntress curse. She's basically a vampire slayer but without the fun parts, and this will surely mean that her relationships with Enzo,...

Mark Pellegrino reappears in this week's Supernatural episode, before the show takes a fortnight's break...
This review contains spoilers.
11.18 Hell's Angel
Crowley’s out and about, searching for a Hand of God to tackle Amara with, getting his hands on the Horn of Joshua to bargain with the Winchesters. He wants his revenge on Lucifer, Dean wants Castiel to get out alive and Sam’s trying desperately to be the voice of reason at the heart of all of this. The gang decide to trick Lucifer, exorcise him from Cas and somehow stop Amara. Meanwhile, Rowena, alive and well after her neck-cracking encounter with the Devil, has got herself close to Amara, pretending to be interested in healing her in order to gain the trust of the entity she suspects is going to win this showdown. It also happens that the boys need Rowena and her magic to help them out too.

Sam, Dean and Crowley decided to deal with their Lucifer and Amara problems in Supernatural season 11 episode 18, "Hell's Angel," though they did disagree with the order in which to do so. Crowley wanted to lock Lucifer back up first, especially after how he treated him, but there was an argument to be made for using him to first take care of Amara using a Hand of God. However, when it came down to it, the Hand of God didn't work against her and she instead whisked Lucifer, still in Castiel's vessel, away, planning to use him to draw out her brother.
Here are the moments leading up to Amara's new plan in "Hell's Angel."...

After a trio of stand-alone episodes, Supernatural finally gets back to the bigger issues of season 11 like stopping Amara and saving Cas from Lucifer. And "Hell's Angel" packs a whole lot into the season-long mythology. A deal is made, a presumed dead character is still alive, we get to see inside Castiel's head and we get to see a showdown between Amara and Lucifer.

For many weeks, my fellow writer and friend Brad McHargue prodded me to watch a slightly obscure 2009 Canadian pseudo-zombie horror movie called Pontypool. This previous Friday night, I finally found some free time to watch this lovely and blindingly original film. Now, I'm not normally one to sprinkle my articles with spoilers to enrage the unsuspecting reader, but I shall give away a plot point of said film here, in order to make a point, so consider yourself warned. It is not entirely false to label Pontypool a zombie movie, but it is not entirely truthful either. In fact, the film's requisite virus that duly spreads amongst the unsuspecting populace is not transmitted by blood or saliva or the air, but language. Halfway through it, and compelled to take a brief break to answer various calls of duty, I sadly received the news that towering intellectual and polemicist Christopher Hitchens had died.
