Thought it was a poor copy of Predator
thealexanders15 January 2002
¡°Code Red: Rubican¡± is about a soldier forced into exile due to ¡°psychological¡± disorders resulting from a failed mission in the past. When a commando mission in the jungle goes horribly wrong, he is called in to help lead the next team. When they enter the jungle and discover the mutilated bodies of the previous team, they quickly realize that there is more to this mission than they were told. While watching this movie I found it hard not to compare it with another very well known movie of a similar nature. (Predator)

Those who like movies where people wander through the jungle and are preyed upon by unknown forces, should enjoy this movie. I was not that thrilled. Late night television only.

If you are looking for a Predator clone ... stay away ... this isn't!
guidomaschio31 August 2002
The only likenesses between Predator and this piece of rotten-cheese are: the jungle, the soldiers, aliens creatures.

Unfortunately these ingredients are mixed so badly with stupid and clichè lines and unopportune shots that I wonder what was the screenwriter thinking about while he wrote this cheese.I.e.: what about the long and senseless scene of the soldier with the snake into his pants while the main character of the movie watch it and takes fun of him instead of helping? We are supposed to smile and thrill at the same time, but in reality all that scene is simply idiotic and it's a misplaced step that bring us to hate that character since the starting.

If you liked "Predator" then go and watch "Predator 2", that was an interesting follow up (although missing the presence of Schwarzenegger) ... but watch "Code Red" ONLY if you like a descent into "C movies".

Code dread
hwg1957-102-26570428 March 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Similar to 'Predator' apart the fact there is no tension, no excitement and no Arnold. Made by people who have seen 'Predator' and 'Aliens' but with less of a budget can't generate much of a response apart from, that was dull. It was made for television so it has obvious places for constant ad breaks. There are action scenes that are cut so quickly you don't know what is going on. Quick cutting is often used to disguise low budgets but for this movie it only shows up the paltriness of the special effects. Which in this case definitely aren't that special.

The acting isn't special either with hilariously bad turns from main lead (as in the metal lead) Brian McNamara as the macho lieutenant Doyle and Steven Grives as General Pembroke. Marjean Holden is better but has the burden of uninteresting dialogue. The rest of the cast are forgettable.

It was nominated for 'Best Achievement in Sound for a Tele-Feature' by the Australian Screen Sound Guild and one isn't surprised as this is the best feature of the film. Watched with headphones strange and eerie sounds lurk on the edge of the soundtrack that are much more effective than the rest of the film elements put together in conveying the threat of something 'out there.'

Terrible!
GenK198119 April 2001
This film really did make me laugh. The acting was terrible, the sound and special effects were nothing special. The only reason i watched this film is because it was free, and i still feel cheated.

All the way through this film it tried to be like Predator that happens to be one of my best films of all time!

The story line was exactly the same as predator, but thats where the comparisons end i'm afraid. Also finally, the aliens in this film are really stupid.

1/10 - its that bad. This is a warning - not a review.

Even more of a Predator rip-off than D.N.A.
Li-12 August 2003
1/2 out of ****

Stealing more than liberally from Predator and Aliens, Code Red has precious little of the qualities that made both those films action/horror classics. The plot's generally not much to speak of, just a group of highly-trained soldiers who are sent into the jungle on a covert operation, but find themselves amuck in gooey aliens. A couple of sub-plots involving sibling "rivalry" add absolutely nothing to the film or the characters, it's just there to pad the running time and add "depth" to our hero.

The movie spends most of its time inserting and virtually re-making scenes from those aforementioned films. The opening, with its blurry video images and flatline heart rates, is taken straight from the first shootout in Aliens. Later "odes" to the James Cameron thriller include nasty aliens (which look pretty cheesy), red lighting, and loud door poundings. The shootouts are also in the same tradition of Aliens, but are poorly directed, lacking a good sense of direction and clarity.

Most of everything else is taken from Predator: the soldiers trapped and hunted in the jungle, the alien with the mask and high-tech equipment, and there's even a "spiritual," quiet and tough soldier who bears more than a passing resemblance to Sonny Landham's Billy. These riffs actually make D.N.A. look completely subtle in comparison. If it wasn't completely horrible throughout, then the movie still falls apart in the climax, when the silly secrets are revealed and it turns out our so-called cyborg alien (who doesn't appear to be a cyborg at all) is actually a good guy. His revelation of how this whole mess began is mind-blowingly idiotic ("They're bugs.").

An abundance of problems are evident throughout. The gooey aliens are kept inside these glass chambers which apparently can hold them in, except on occasions when it requires a cast member to die. These containers have held these things for thirty years and they somehow get out without a hitch. Uh-huh. The guy playing General Pembroke sounds like he's dubbed over (that can't be his real voice), said general also begins to approach the site before confirmation that the nuclear fail-safe has been deactivated, and the final shootout has such a high body count, I swear more mercenaries were killed than were even involved.

I think the filmmakers don't seem to understand the qualities that made Predator a classic; that film gave us great action, likeable characters, a good macho sense of humor, and kept its plot simple but engrossing. Code Red vies for the same aspects, but decides to muck it up with an ever escalating series of hilariously bad plot twists and revelations. Avoid it, and just watch Predator again for the fifteenth time.

How To Make A Movie
Theo Robertson15 May 2003
Warning: Spoilers
Want to know how to get funding for a movie ? It`s relatively simple , just turn up at a sales pitch and say your screenplay is a cross between ALIENS and PREDATOR which means the producer will jump at the chance of making a film that`s a cross between two massive blockbusters . Don`t worry if he can`t do your script justice with a hundred million dollar budget because he`ll save a massive amount of money by filming in the nearest forest pretending it`s darkest Africa . And don`t worry if this is totally unconvincing because that`s the audiences fault for having no imagination . And no doubt the producer will cut other corners by using the alien costume from ENEMY MINE , the Borg costumes from STAR TREK:TNG , cast off corpses from LIFEFORCE and employ actors no one has ever heard of . And don`t complain either , you`ve got your foot in the door and with any luck your next screenplay will be produced with a budget ten times your debut movie . It may even be made with a six figure sum

!!!!! SPOILERS !!!!!!

What`s that you`re screaming ? Isn`t there such a thing as copyright ? Yes but in order not to receive a copyright writ make sure that you have a ridiculous ending in the last ten minutes with the alien being a good guy who`s actually being trying to save the humans . Despite copying ALIENS and PREDATOR scene for scene for the first 80 minutes the producers of these two films won`t be able to sue . Another tip is make sure the anti hero has family issues like a long lost brother who he hates so that when he dies the tough macho anti hero starts weeping like a big girl . This is what`s known as character development, and a scene like this didn`t appear in ALIENS or PREDATOR so once again you don`t have to worry about court appearances . And make sure one of the characters is an ethnic women because not only will Halle Berry be kicking herself she missed out on the role but all the women and ethnic minorities will be able to identify with her , especially if they`re good at martial arts . And since Tarantino style post modernism is fashionable make sure you steal lines from films like SPLIT SECOND or JAWS because the critics will think you`re a genius . And make sure your climax is very exciting , this can only be done by having the hero defuse a bomb . Contary to popular perception size is very important in these situations so make sure it`s a thermo nuclear bomb . Don`t worry if there`s no logic to this because the audience will be too excited to notice.

A big thank you to the makers of CODE RED for showing us how to make a movie

Shameless B-movie ripoff of "Predator"
stwolfgang22 February 2004
Warning: Spoilers
*POSSIBLE SPOILERS* People often use the term "ripoff" quite liberally when describing a movie. In this case however, it cannot be overstated enough. From the plot of an elite military unit sent into a jungle under the guise of locating a similarly elite team that lost contact, right down to the stoic Native American soldier copy of Predator's Billy, it can only be assumed the creators of this monstrosity were hoping the viewers had never seen "Predator." Of course along for the ride on this trip is a female version of Dillon who knows more than she lets on. And what does all this add up to? Discovering horribly disfigured corpses of the lost team upon arrival, an alien running through the jungle keeping tabs on the team, members being picked off one by one and even killing one man off then hoisting him high up in a tree. Of course the alien can shoot an oh-so-similar "laser cannon."

So what exactly is different? There is of course no Arnold. There is also the supposition that the alien presence is known, and has been known, for years. There is even a modern military bunker in the middle of a jungle with a placard above the door identifying who runs it and what it's for. Beyond that is the typical B-movie stuff: bad acting, cheesy special effects (the "alien" is a man in body armor and a mask) and laughable dialog. One team member even carries a PDA that apparently gets great reception in the depths of a the jungle, but never uses it to contact the outside world for help or info. Of course then there is the universal theme of tossing in a nuclear bomb that needs to be disarmed. The really great twist is that in order to stop the timer, rather than entering a code, the team must answer a series of trivia questions.

Though there is no reason to condemn a film strictly for being a B-movie, it is the shameless copying of story line down to minute detail which sets this one apart from other's like it. The only mystery to this film is how to find a way to rate it without anything lower than a 1. If anyone wants to have a good time watching this film, it should be by trying to match up the number of times "Predator" is plagiarized.

I see... red.
lost-in-limbo24 December 2008
Oh I laughed and cried. Maybe I went in to it looking too hard, but this made for TV presentation is a lousy and by-the-numbers knock-off ('Predator' for most part)… ah most of this cable ilk could be labelled so, but where it got me was how passé it was on delivering thrills and excitement. Yes, the story didn't draw me in at all (and does it get silly in the latter half) and the transparent characters would only annoy (not a good sign), so I was hoping they would up the ante, but it just smoldered along as it seemed to be running on empty and the macho dialogues were utterly pathetic. It didn't roll off the tongues, but felt forced and clunky. I just wanted some fun. No so luck. Hey one thing I couldn't knock though, even though it looks cheap however the CGI was competently executed and never overdone in any way. They even used some passable puppet designs too, and the main alien design works out well despite being a cross between 'Predator' (mainly the armour it wears) and alien from 'Enemy Mine'. Disappointing was that the action with these CGI beasties is cut-up and blurry, making it hard to adjust and the block-headed characters get plenty of time but in the end they aren't worth it. Brian McNamara was so-so, but the rest were largely forgettable, just like this whole presentation.

Just plain terrible
bullions279 August 2002
My expectations were pretty low (talking Death Valley low here) before I saw this movie and I'm thankful of it. Yes, it is a mindless copy of Predator / Alien series / <insert favorite B-sci-fi movie cliche here> all together and yes both the acting and script were pretty atrocious and comical. Code Red borrows way too many scenes (and characters) from the aforementioned titles for it to be distinguished as a movie. A scene or two is fine (sort of), but to recycle everything just makes it plain obvious you had no idea what the heck you were doing.

NOT where they got the idea for AVP
silverfang-426 November 2005
It is NOT where they got the idea for Aliens vs Predator. Dark Horse Comics had the Aliens vs. Predator comics starting in 1989.

Decent movie but could have been better. Special effects are not half bad. The acting wasn't horrible and the creature is just a copy of the Predator (not exact but very similar) A good way to reach out to predator fans by imitating something they love. The added bug aliens are interesting. Even the alien ship looks fairly similar to some of the designs for Predator style ships.

I do wish people wouldn't come down so hard on a movie just because it borrows from other more popular movies. This movie does a good job of making the subjects its own without being too blatant.

I saw it last night
bcolquho27 November 2005
I saw it last night. Did it look like Predator? Yes. Did it look like Enemy Mine? Probably. I never saw Enemy Mine. Did it look like The Last Starfighter? No. How about Alien? Yes, vaguely. Was it a ripoff of those movies? DEFINITELY NOT! Nothing is original. One reviewer said that the took Borg costumes from Star Trek: TNG. If you remember Star Trek: TNG, and I do, then you'll know that the Borg didn't wear helmets that covered their entire heads. They had flashlights for eyes. So as not to spoil it, I'm giving a thumbnail of the plot. Marine suffers nervous breakdown. Marine is brought out of retirement to find his missing brother. Marine joins SEAL team find his missing brother and alien cyborg. Militants want alien weapons. Militants are eaten by man-eating alien bugs. Want more? Watch the movie. I ain't givin' away no more secrets.

Remember that it's a TV movie
ipkevin9 August 2002
Yes, this film is obviously influenced in great part by Predator and is in no way an equal to that classic. But you know what? It's not supposed to be! It's not a big budget Hollywood flick. It's a B-movie. A made-for-TV one at that. By that standard, Code Red is actually a bit above average. The acting is decent and the directing is competent. It's not ultra stylish, but the director knows where to put the camera and there is vigor in some of the action scenes. Most surprisingly, the weapons and costumes aren't laughably inaccurate like many B-movies. Which is not to say it's perfectly authentic (eg, they fly around in a civilian helicopter), but at least you don't have American soldiers carrying around low-end foreign weapons because that's all the production could find at that filming location.

Finally, the concept is fun and goes beyond simply being a Predator clone. With its secret government bases, alien conspiracies, and other pulpy sci-fi novel elements, the whole thing takes on a fun, "X-Files by way of action movie" feel. If you can accept that you won't be seeing Hollywood production values, then you may find Code Red to be an enjoyable little film.

Not Predator
sttropez7 September 2001
There will probably be a lot of spotty nerds squealing that this is a cheap Predator rip-off. Believe me, it ain't.

Predator was about, well, an alien predator. So as not to spoil the plot, I'll just say, this ain't. It's got everything, including a bald general (they should have got the guy from Stargate), a likeable psycho commander, a female Lara Croft-lookalike commander complete with PhD and martial art skills, several amusing soldiers who drop faster than Captain Kirk's security officers on an away mission and, well, the aliens (yes, plural). It's sort of Predator, Jurassic Park, Top Gun and a few other genres rolled into one. But believe me, it's not mindless patriotic gun-ho violence.

A worthwhile video. And if you have your mates round, you can play "Guess who buys it next"!

Verdict: 7/10

Good....... for what it is.
colo1188 December 2006
I've seen the the movie yesterday night and i was a little surprised. For me at the beginning it was just a rip-off of Predator but its certainly not.The plot was simple and unoriginal, the script was dumb and it was not scary at all.

But where i enjoyed the movie is the high production value for a B-movie. The special effect were a little superior than the other B-movie.Some good flashy explosion and high polygon monster. The director have done a good job. Some scenes are very well directed.

The acting was good. Some actor have done a good performance in their role. But they are some actor who act like a puppet.

The thing i enjoyed the most is the action sequences, they are quite entertaining. They are well directed and well filmed. They know where to put the camera angle and the motion in each scenes. And there a lot of action scenes for this kind of movie.

So,its a well directed B-movie with good action sequences ,but suffer with a dumb script and unoriginality.

this is where Alien vs Predator got their idea
KHayes66612 July 2005
This Sci-Fi channel original must have been the idea that spawned Alien vs Predator. The movie combines the basic premise of Predator and added bad guys similar to the ones in Aliens.

A group of militants led by Sheeva from Mortal Kombat Annihilation (Marjean Holden) is sent to find a missing soldier and to figure out what happened to a secret base. On the way, the marines are picked off one by one by unfriendly mutant bugs. Unknown to the militants, the base had made contact with a planet from outer space, upon which the planet had sent bugs for Earth to study. Little did the aliens know their form of bug can make mincemeat out of a human being, so they sent 2 militants of their own to eliminate the bugs. The rest of the movie you'll have to see to understand, but if you're not into a cerebral plot then this isn't for you.

The entire movie had a plot similar to A v P but the kick was, Code Red came out BEFORE A v P. The actors are your basic B-Movie actors so the dialog can be kind of corny at times. The highlight of the movie is the end where the main character's brother has to save the day by answering Boston Celtics trivia.

Its a very intriguing plot but the actors watered down the final product, but since its a made for TV movie...not such a bad thing.

What a crap movie this film was. A mix between Predator and Aliens, but just could not pull it off. The effects were cheesy, the 'Predator' dude looked like that creature from Enemy Mine, the acting was terrible, in fact, the only good bit about this movie were the credits at the end. Watch it if you're looking for an additional reason to commit suicide!

okay, so it's a cheaper version of predator
carolann2136 June 2002
Yeah - very similar film to Predator, team of army folks trekking through the jungle and encountering alien lifeforms. I loved it, some of the film quality was a bit dubious, looked like someone had been let loose with a videocamera and a couple of army surplus uniforms but the acting was adequate and the story okay. Parts of it I hid behind the sofa from, which is always a good standard to set a horror film by.

Filmed in Australia, so it ain't up to Hollywood standards but it doesn't pretend to be, it's just a very watchable film.

An Adequate But Not Particularly Amazing Sci Fi Horror Movie
tabuno14 January 2019
30 May 2015. As elegantly interesting but flawed The Hybrid (2014), Code Red is one of those low-budget mainstream versions that has a decent plot but resounds in distracting loud energized music and some stereotypical characters, and one fairly wooden bad guy. The movie overall doesn't have the intensity and polish of Aliens (1986) or Predator (1987). Even Galaxy of Terror (1981) had a this eerie, unbalanced undertone. Yet Code Red does have its moments and it is possible to see the effort to make the content of this movie more than just another hash job. There are efforts at alien twists, characterization that goes beyond the two dimensional, attempts at more depth, but it is just the mainstream effort to be something more than gets in the way. This a decent but not sufficiently refined movie to break through to being a good movie.

With a better director, and more $$$ ...
Bill-6259 August 2002
I won't disagree with the prior comments - it's a cheesy film with bad acting and so-so special effects. The macho attitude crap poisons the storytelling throughout. The story is kind of interesting, however. What would have happened with a better director, and more money in the budget? Oh wait ... that would be Predator!

Enjoyable...
OwlsRock20 May 2006
This movie was shown on Sci-fi only a few moments ago, though it is rare that I've ever watched a movie on that channel to do something other than make fun of it, I for one, enjoyed this movie. For the most part it has a different sort of plot than the 'other' movies I've seen while watching that channel. While most I see are all about how there are a few people and they must kill off some offending monster, this is more interesting and unique among them. Like the Alien Quadrilogy, Deep Rising, Pitch Black, and many other movies that for one made it into the theaters. Code Red has some human verses human action as well as man verses monster. Making it not one of the best, but somewhat enjoyable when you're looking for something that you can just sit down with popcorn alone and watch it. Not something to walk a mile for, but it definitely deserves a bit more credit than what the sci-fi channel can offer usually.

Also, we've all seen those terrible 'horror movies' where the 'old people' get devoured and a the 'young, nice looking people' get to live; such as The Fog. I would definitely rate this movie above many of the horror movies idiots are putting in theaters these days. I'll admit the effects are terrible, but we all know effects do not make a movie, therefore a movie should not be judged by them entirely. If you can ignore a lot of cheesy creatures sucking the life out of people, it is a good film.

Looks a lot like Predator
AVickers10 July 2002
Plenty of deep jungle scenery, tense army guys shouting at each other. Even the "shooting the bushes" scene is there, only without the minigun this time.

In fact, this is not a particularly bad film. The acting is a bit middle of the road, some of the characterisations are comically over the top, but if you're willing to let some of the bigger plot holes by, it's actually quite watchable. Just don't expect your intelligence to be stretched...

I cannot believe that I sat through this film. I should be able to sue someone for wasting 90mins of my life.

Essentially it's Predator without the big names, good locations or great effects. This film should be brought up under the Trades Description Act. It's one of those films that you know is terrible but you cannot take your eyes off - more out of morbid curiosity than anything else.

Do yourself a favour, if you ever find yourself starting to watch this film...Stop and go and have some root canal work done instead...it will be less painful.

Surprisingly entertaining.

Warning: Spoilers
"Code red: the rubicon conspiracy" is a surprisingly refreshing and original monster movie. The plot has a group of soldiers traveling through a jungle (Beautifully filmed Australian locations) looking for a base that contains a nuclear bomb. *spoiler warning* They were ordered by there superiors to defuse a the nuclear bomb before it blows. However, it turns out that the base was originally used as a alien cover-up base, and soon monsters are attacking and sucking dry the soldiers, including a lizard man and toothy, crab-like monsters. With a good sense of humor, a witty script, cool and original creature designs, good acting and competent direction, "Code red" is a surprisingly good monster movie recommended for a Friday night with your friends.

Sum Boddy3 August 2003
I've read other comments with people doing their best to rip this film apart. Sure it has Predator/Alien vibes, but it's not a copy and paste movie. Code Red is neither the perfect movie, just being a made-for-TV hurts it some, nor the worst. It has many cliches including: the tough girl who can do just as well as the guys, the lucky charm to ward off evil (That always fails), and the evil government official. Actually I'm surprised that people didn't notice the one scene with the "Predator-like" Alien that causes memories of Arnold Schwarznegger in Terminator. All-in-all it leaves you with a little bit of a smile at the end 6/10
