What would you do if your best friends are sacrificing their love for you. Meet Raj (Hrithik Roshan), Pooja (Rani Mukerji) and Tina (Kareena Kapoor) - 3 best friends thrown into a situation that time, letters, love and separation have created for them.—gavin (racktoo@hotmail.com)
- Pooja Sahani (Rani Mukerji) (Parents Mr. Gurmeet Sahani (Satish Shah) & Mrs. Sahani (Himani Shivpuri)), Raj Khanna (Hrithik Roshan), and Tina Kapoor (Kareena Kapoor) (Father Arjun Kapoor (Sachin Khedekar)) are childhood friends. While Raj has always been attracted to Tina, he is unaware of Pooja's love for him. Raj's parents (Mr. Ranjeet Khanna (Kiran Kumar) & Mrs. Khanna (Smita Jaykar)) decides to move to London with his family for work. Before leaving, Raj makes Tina promise to communicate with him via e-mail.
Tina, fun-loving and distracted, does not want the responsibility so Pooja writes to Raj, signing the emails "Tina" instead of her own name to help Tina keep her promise and make Raj happy. Over the years, their e-mails bring them close (he also tells her about a tune that he hymns in church, whenever he is alone). Fifteen years later, Raj returns to India for a vacation. By now, he is in love with the girl he has been writing to and believes he can recognize her at first sight so they don't exchange photographs before his arrival.
Pooja tells Tina, how she has been writing to Raj under her name for the last 15 yrs. Tina, agrees to help Pooja to continue pretending that Tina wrote the letters to Raj, as he is in India only for 2 weeks.
When the three meet, Raj walks past Pooja, not recognizing her as he said he would, but recognizes Tina, becoming smitten with her and thinking she wrote him all these years. He does not notice that the real Tina is completely different from the Tina he knew from the e-mails (she doesn't like the same books, doesn't remember the tune, doesn't remember their favorite food, believes in Radha Kishan as deities). Tina later introduces Pooja (who Raj doesn't notice has the exact same likes and dislikes as himself), and they become friends.
Pooja doesn't reveal to Tina that she is in love with Raj. While Tina starts to take an interest in Raj as he is very handsome and good for her image. Raj learns that Pooja wants to study art in London University. Tina, despite being aware of the fact that she is not the one who Raj has been talking to for years and is not the one he really loves, cannot resist Raj's flirting (he wants to kiss her when he drops her home, and brings her tacky jewelry) and falls in love with him. Their parents gladly announce an engagement. Heartbroken, Pooja decides to never disclose the secret.
Raj returns to London, where Pooja travels for a college interview. Raj takes Pooja to his favorite church and she accidentally hums the tune of a song he wrote to her about many years ago. Hearing this, Raj instantly realizes that Pooja is the one who had been writing to him all those years, and remembers all the little things (Pooja's copy of "love story", cross on her wall, Cauliflower Paranthas) he had shared in the e-mails that she knows about. Pooja accuses Raj of falling for Tina's beauty and ignoring all the signs in front of him. He tells her she is the one he truly loves and the two decide to get together. Back in India, Tina's father dies, leaving Tina all alone. His last wish was that Tina would marry Raj, and Pooja's parents say that they will perform all the rituals as Tina's parents. Seeing that Tina is alone now (who also professes her love for Raj), Pooja refuses to marry Raj. Raj is against this and insists on telling his parents the truth but Pooja stops him. He angrily vows that he will only marry Tina if Pooja marries someone else on the same day.
In London, Rohan Verma (Uday Chopra) (Parents Mr. Verma (Parikshat Sahni) & Mrs. Verma (Maya Alagh)) is a friend of Raj's who has always been attracted to Pooja. When the families travel to London for Raj and Tina's marriage (after 3 months) (Raj questions Pooja about her promise to him about marrying someone else. Raj says he will abandon Tina, if Pooja does not marry on the same day). After the engagement, Rohan starts pursuing Pooja and her family gives him a wide space, as they want Pooja to say yes as well. They start casual dating as Rohan takes her out for movies and such. Pooja advises Tina not to tell Raj about how Pooja wrote the letters to Raj and not Tina. Meanwhile Pooja educated Tina about Raj's preferences and Raj does that for Rohan compared to Pooja. Pooja parents appoint Raj to approach her and convince her to marry Rohan. Pooja agrees to marry Rohan to satisfy Raj's ultimatum and ensure Tina's happiness.
Many small little things happen. The 4 some play truth or dare and Tina reveals that Pooja wrote those letters to Raj. Raj Says then he should be marrying Pooja. Pooja and Tina are crossing the road and a car comes towards them and Raj instinctively yells "Pooja". Rohan also suspects that Raj and Pooja love each other.
On the day of the marriage, Tina finally realizes that Raj is really in love with Pooja, as she sees that Raj's family ancestral bracelet (that Raj's mom had said are given to the daughter-in-law of the house) was fitted for Pooja's wrist rather than hers (and Tina had found them in Pooja's possession, as Raj had gifted them to her before coming back to India for the 2nd time). At the altar, Tina confronts Raj and Pooja, saying that she is not alone and is glad to have such great friends willing to sacrifice their love for her. The film ends with Pooja and Raj getting married.
