Up above the streets and houses rainbow climbing high...
chojin-15 July 2001
Rainbow ran for years and years, It spawned loads of merchandise and a whole collection of videos. Yet I doubt it will ever be shown or mentioned again. It had absolutely everything; stories, songs, nursery rhymes, comedy, and it's own mini-series programs within the program, such as portland bill and cockelshell bay.

The main cast of Rainbow were Geoffrey who was the narrator/presenter/adult of the house who kept the others in line. Zippy, the strange creature with a zip for a mouth, which became very useful as he was also the loudest and naughtiest of the bunch and served for teaching moral lessons. George the pink hippo, who was quite bashful and always giggling. And finally Bungle a large guy dressed in a bear costume that was the bossiest, but also very camp. Rainbow also had a resident group of singers, Rod, Jane and Freddy, who made cameo appearances and were used for songs etc. but eventually got their own spin-off series and videos.

Each show was different, and I never really grew out of it, despite it being aimed at 4-7 year olds. Classic children's variety television from the eighties.

Up Above Most Modern Programmes
screenman25 October 2008
Warning: Spoilers
It's early 1970's, and with a lingering hint of psychedelia slipping into pomp style, came 'Rainbow'.

Here was an excellent programme for kids that wasn't dumbed-down. In fact it was as much fun for grown-ups as for tots. There seemed to be a little bit of something for everybody, presented by a motley band of individuals including a bear, a bashful pink hippo, and a crabby little know-it-all character called zippy. Each of them were very much like variations of young kid, and kept in order by the indefatigable Geoffery.

It was humongously popular for very good reasons. And then, for the inevitable bad reasons, it got axed. The period of 1965-1975 was the most imaginative for television programmes.

Much enjoyed by those of us who were around at the time. I still often find myself whistling its jaunty little theme tune.

''Oh, Geoffrey!''
Rabical-918 November 2017
Warning: Spoilers
'Rainbow' was one of my favourite kids shows of all time when I was a kid and as much as I probably should not admit it, I still enjoy watching it now. This fun little Thames Television venture was hosted originally by David Cook but was replaced two years after its inception by Geoffrey Hayes. This change was for the better. Hayes was far funnier and more likable than his predecessor and had a better chemistry with the characters.

Interacting with Geoffrey were Bungle, a dopey clumsy bear ( portrayed by five different actors - John Leeson, Stanley Bates, Malcolm Lord, Anthony Pitt and Paul Cullinan ), George, a pink hippopotamus puppet ( voiced by Roy Skelton ) and Zippy ( also voiced by Roy Skelton ), a puppet with a rugby-ball shaped head and a zip for a mouth ( which was sometimes zipped up when he got too cheeky ). Zippy was arguably and deservedly the most popular character in the show. His lippy and mischievous behaviour quite often stole the show. Also appearing from time to time were Rod Burton, Jane Tucker and Freddy Marks ( known simply as just Rod, Jane and Freddy ), who would appear both to provide the show's musical items and to interact with the other characters games. In between scenes in which the characters would perform well known stories or fairy tales would be animated sequences in which drawings would come to life.

'Rainbow' came off air in 1992 when Thames lost its franchise with ITV. It was revived by Tetra Films in 1994, minus Geoffrey Hayes, who struggled to find acting work after the show's cancellation. He later took a job driving taxis to earn a living, something which was later parodied in a commercial about investing money.

Inevitably, 'Rainbow' has very much dated but it is still great fun to watch, even it is just for the very nostalgia of the piece.

Rainbow

Warning: Spoilers
If I had to choose a favourite kids show from my childhood, this one would definitely be number 1. Rainbow was my most favourite children's show that I can remember. It always opened with wonderful music and song. Then we would go into the Rainbow house where we would say hello to one of the four house friends. Geoffrey Hayes as Presenter was perfect. He was nice, he was clever, he was friendly, and he was always there to help with the puppets problems. The three puppets also made Rainbow a big favourite. There was the big cuddly brown bear, Bungle. The pink eye-lashed probably gay hippo, George. But my favourite was the sometimes loud, mischievous yellow puppet, Zippy (with a zip for mouth). Throughout the show they told stories, sang wonderful songs and sometimes had a good guest, e.g. Bobby Davro. The singers that I most enjoyed besides the main stars were the regular guests Rod Burton, Jane Tucker and Freddy Marks (or Rod, Jane and Freddy), they were so brilliant I even saw them on stage. I would definitely recommend this to you and your kids, this is just an excellent family show. It was number 7 on The 100 Greatest Kids' TV Shows. Outstanding!

Great memories

Who could forget this children's classic? Presenter Geoffrey Hayes cavorted about like a big kid for the best part of twenty years, accompanied by a large man in a bear suit ('Bungle'), and a couple of hand puppets (camp pink George, who was a hippo, and loud, raucous Zippy, who was a creature with big eyes and a large, zippable mouth).

Next door lived Rod, Jane and Freddy (earlier Rod, Jane, and Roger) who were daft and slightly fey hippy singers.

I don't remember the series in its earliest days before the arrival of Geoffrey & co., so these comments are mainly concerning the period between 1976 and 1986. 'Rainbow' was curiously addictive even when you had outgrown the age range it was aimed at, and now, like 'Bagpuss' and 'The Clangers', it has achieved something of a cult status.

Totally brilliant, right from the twee song 'paint the whole world with a rainbowwww' to Bungle's bungling, Zippy's arguments, George's rollers and frilly nightie, and Geoffrey's obvious acceptance of his role as king of children's telly for two generations.

Rainbow Songs
pepamac10 June 2010
Anyone who wants to hear the songs from Rainbow should check out "Rod, Jane and Freddy, the songs". You can listen to them online or download them to your MP3. Like the programmes themselves, the songs cover a wide range of activities and experiences. There's a touch of magic with "Abracadabra", a trip to "Africa" and "China", songs about Christmas and fairy stories. But not only are we taken to far-away places, there are also songs which remind us to be nicer people. Songs about being careful, caring, sensible and all the other things that good little boys and girls (and the adults they become) should be. This large collection of songs should bring back wonderful memories who watched this series as children (or as rather guilty-feeling adults).

I have to admit when i was a child i was transfixed by rainbow.

It was all good fun with naughty zippy causing all manner of grief!

However i do have just one question.

Why did Bungle wear Blue and White pyjama's to bed then walk around the house butt ass naked all day? even out into the garden as well!

whats up with that?

other than that i loved this series bring it back.

its better than the crap that they put on TV for kids nowadays! Rainbow's the DON!

I agree with what TC Raymond wrote. I have a website with that exact clip. And here it is: HTTP://www.ebaumsworld.com/rainbowkidsshow.HTML I hope each and every one of you enjoy it as much as I have. Because this is the greatest TV show/segment ever. On a scale of 1-10, I gave it a 20. It's a classic. And Jane is hot! her maracas are too. LOL Is there any chance of this coming out on DVD? I need to see this on DVD. I'll be the first one in line to buy it online or at the store. Do they have an official website? That would be awesome. It'd be the greatest kid's show of all time since "The Electric Company". Let's give it up for the greatest cast of twanger-players ever. The cast of "Rainbow".

A Great TV Show!
gottobecertain8 July 2004
Rainbow was one of the best TV shows that I grew up with, and it was one of the jewels in the crown for ITV (Independant Television).

It was produced by Thames Television who were the operators of ITV in the London region during weekdays from 1968 to 1992. In 1992, Thames lost the London franchise to Carlton Communications, and they didn't want Rainbow, so it was axed.

There have been recent attempts to resurrect it, but none have been successful. Presenter Jeffrey, was recently revealed in a tabloid newspaper to be a trolley pusher at a supermarket in North London!
