scary memories
christopher-taylor8517 December 2009
I too remember this, despite being only 7 at the time. I seem to remember the clowns face suddenly flashing up 'huge' in the screen. It frightened me a lot, but i pretended to enjoy it! I would love to see a clip of it again. I seem to remember that the next 'classic' to be serialised, immediately after this, was the 'Secret of the Nubian tomb'? And do i remember the line, 'I am here, Mr Eyre'? I cannot remember which of these two serials this line appeared in, but i do remember using the line whilst playing a related game with my brother, after watching it on TV! The children's classic was such a mainstay of Sunday afternoon, I wish that it had been available when my kids were little; but perhaps it spared them some bad dreams!

A forgotten classic!

I fondly recall this show from my youth. I remember that in parts it had a dark and menacing quality and it left an indelible mark in my mind. In particular I recall one scene where the "clown" appears. For a young boy, as I was then, it really was a powerful moment. How gratifying to finally find this show (with it's correct title - something I couldn't quite remember after so many years) listed on the Internet at IMDb. I hadn't realized it was written by one of Britain's greatest TV writers, Brian Clemens. Sadly, I suspect the tapes of this fine show were probably lost decades ago and we will never see it released on DVD. But boy does it bring back wonderful memories. For mine, The Mask of the Clown was a seminal moment in the Golden Years of Television. 2014 Note: According to the website lostshows.com all episodes of The Mask of the Clown are still in existence!

Great series which frightened the life out of me.

As a boy of eight, I well remember coming home from Sunday School and putting the TV on round about three o'clock in the afternoon. I think Joe 'Mr Piano' Henderson was on in the background. What I remember most though was the excellent serial thriller 'The Mask of the Clown'. I was rather scared when the clown appeared on screen and he did a forward roll, showing his painted face up to the screen. Disconcerting at the time, but I was hooked on the series. Great nostalgia! I found out later that Brian Clemens was involved. Must have been his apprenticeship for 'The Avengers'. I would like to see the series again, but it probably will remain in the vaults.
