Very powerful and educational special
Moax4299 October 2004
I remember first seeing "The Drug Knot" in September 1986 when CBS first ran it as a prime-time special (I had graduated from college in New Jersey three months before) and again when it was repeated as a "CBS Schoolbreak Special" the following spring; when the rerun aired, my family had bought their first VCR and I had the good fortune to have taped it.

I recently dug up the tape when I was cleaning up my room a few months ago, and watched it again. I have to admit, the first time I saw the scene where Toma chases Doug out of the auditorium after he interrupts Toma with a smart crack ("Somebody out to put this guy out of his misery!") I was laughing my brains out, but it certainly isn't funny when someone you know has a drug problem of some kind and someone like Toma offers to help you. (I have recently struggled with alcohol, and sought help through A.A.; it certainly feels better not to have the chains of addiction binding me and worrying others.)

When I lived in New Jersey, I remember Superstation WWOR in New York had a weekly talk show with David Toma; I never had an opportunity to watch it and when I finally got a satellite dish WWOR canceled Toma's show (I heard that was the decision of WWOR's new owner at that time, Vivendi/Universal, Inc.). Apparently the station's new owner thought Toma's positive messages didn't appeal to a wide audience - very sad!

I do agree with the other writer's comment - this should be required viewing for anyone who has had, or knows of someone struggling with, a drug addiction. And now that CBS and Paramount are both Viacom companies (CBS Productions produced "The Drug Knot"), if Paramount's home video division were smart they could - and SHOULD - unearth "The Drug Knot" from CBS' vaults and put it on DVD (the original VHS tape I found is beginning to deteriorate after 17 years)!

So, Paramount, are you listening?

David Toma Drug Lectoure

I had the privilege of seeing David Toma in person on January 3, 1988 at Granada Hills High School in Granada Hills, California. I will never forget it. Toma's story is compelling and hard-hitting. After reading his book. Toma Tells It Straight With Love, seeing him in person was even more unforgettable to me. Next year this legendary giant of a man will be 75 years old. I want to wish him an early Happy Birthday to this true man among men. Alcohol and drugs will ruin a person's life.

Drugs and alcohol are very, very bad for you They will ruin your life Get them out of your life Before it becomes too late. Drunk and drugged up people do many foolish things God Bless David Toma Parents give up alcohol and drugs for the sake of your kids Kids give up alcohol and drugs for yourself, for your parents and for your futures.

Chilling

David Toma is a true American hero and I think every young person who has ever been tempted by drugs should watch this film of one of his lectures to kids. I read his book and this man is awesome. I don't think I have ever seen such a dynamic. powerful speaker. I saw this Schoolbreak Special 15 years ago and the ending still haunts me. It has got the most chilling, horrifying ending that you could possibly imagine. I have included my e-mail address, does anyone have a tape of this show they could send me? I have been trying to find it for a long time.

One of the best anti-drug shows out there!!
Blondie_8 October 2002
I completely agree with the other comments on here. David Toma is the best anti-drug lecturer out there. He is very up front, out spoken, and appropriately graphic in his lectures. I saw this show when it first aired 16 years ago and it still makes my stomach turn. Pretty harsh for the usual afterschool special, and it worked! The ending is particularly horrifying, unexpected, and very disturbing. I hope that kids in school everywhere get to see this shows, it should be mandatory IMO!

Warning: Spoilers
Is this the one where he and his girlfriend drive off a cliff singing a song from The Wizard Of Oz? And she's killed but he survives? I remember seeing a special sometime in the '80's with that ending and have been looking for it ever since. Does anyone know?
