66 scener fra Amerika" or "66 scenes from America" is a Danish documentary from 1982, so this one is already over 35 years old and it was directed by Jørgen Leth, written by Ole John. For Leth, the man immediately associated with this project, it was neither a really early nor a late filmmaking effort. He started in the 60s and still came up with new projects a few years ago in his 80s now. The title summarized it pretty well. You see scenes from somewhere in America, locations, people, food, water etc. while hearing a very brief, usually never more than 2 words comment abut what it is you see right now. There is a feeling of nostalgia and Americana to this film. You see from the film's technical quality imemdiately that it is not a recent effort. But you also see it from the way some of the people look, like the lawyer near the end. Very 80s style. Oh yeah and then it also has artist Andy Warhol eating a hamburger. People today would perhaps complain about product placement I don't know. I must say I did not recognize Warhol, but for some weird reason i appreciated his scene just like the rest. By the way, Leth made a sequel shortly after 9/11 and I will check that one out at some point as well for sure. Feels strange that the gap between this one and the sequel is only minimally longer than the gap between the sequel and now. Oh my how time has passed so quickly. Maybe the recent gap is even bigger depending on when you read my review. It is a good little film. I enjoyed it for the well-working mix of simplicity, bleakness and emotion. A time long gone, but luckily it is kept alive by films like this one. Definitely not for everybody, but you can decide for yourself after the first 5 minutes or so already if you want to keep watching. It won't change in any way afterwards. I think you should!
